TL;DR: There is some evidence for an association between prenatal BPA exposure and obesity-related outcomes in childhood, although not in infancy, and the large uncertainties in BPA Exposure assessment require that findings be interpreted with caution.
Abstract: Background:Increasing experimental evidence suggests that prenatal bisphenol A (BPA) exposure induces offspring weight gain, but these effects remain largely unexplored in humans. We examined the effects of prenatal BPA exposure on postnatal growth and obesity. Methods:BPA concentrations were measure

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present experimental results for partial molar volumes and viscosities of aqueous solutions of α-dl-aminobutyric acid, dl-norvaline and dl−norleucine at 288.15, 293.15 and 303.15 K. According to the usual hydrophobicity criteria, the amino acids considered do not have a hydrophobic character and their behavior is dominated by the polar groups.
Abstract: In this work, we present experimental results for partial molar volumes and viscosities of aqueous solutions of α-dl-aminobutyric acid, dl-norvaline and dl-norleucine at 288.15, 293.15, 298.15 and 303.15 K. The thermodynamic behavior of aqueous amino acid solutions is compared with that reported for glycine and α-alanine in water and is discussed in terms of group additivity and electrostriction. The temperature dependence of the infinite dilution partial molar volumes and the B viscosity coefficients are interpreted in terms of amino acid hydration. According to the usual hydrophobicity criteria, the amino acids considered do not have a hydrophobic character and their behavior is dominated by the polar groups.

TL;DR: The ability of kisspeptin-10 to stimulate LH release was fully preserved, and even doubled, after short-term fasting despite suppression of prevailing LH levels, and in this setting, in vivo LH responses to a terminal injection of GnRH were preserved, whereas basal and depolarization-induced GnRH release ex vivo was significantly enhanced.
Abstract: The ability of kisspeptins, ligands of the G protein-coupled receptor 54, to potently elicit LH secretion is now undisputed. Yet, most of the pharmacological characterization of their gonadotropin-releasing effects has been conducted after intracerebral administration. In contrast, the effects of peripheral injection of kisspeptin remains less well defined. In this study, dynamic LH secretory responses to iv administration of kisspeptin-10 in different experimental settings are presented, and compared with those evoked by kisspeptin-52, using a protocol of serial blood sampling in conscious, freely moving male rats. LH responsiveness to peripheral administration of kisspeptin appeared extremely sensitive, as doses as low as 0.3 nmol/kg (0.1 μg/rat) evoked robust LH bursts, the magnitude of which was dose-dependent and apparently maximal in response to 3.0 and 30 nmol/kg kisspeptin-10. The ability of kisspeptin-10 to stimulate LH release was fully preserved, and even doubled in terms of relative increases,...

TL;DR: A novel α-MSH→kisspeptin→GnRH neuronal signaling pathway involved in transmitting the permissive effects of leptin on pubertal maturation is documented, which is relevant for the metabolic (and, eventually, pharmacological) regulation of puberty onset.
Abstract: Objective
Puberty is a key developmental phenomenon highly sensitive to metabolic modulation. Worrying trends of changes in the timing of puberty have been reported in humans. These might be linked to the escalating prevalence of childhood obesity and could have deleterious impacts on later (cardio-metabolic) health, but their underlying mechanisms remain unsolved. The neuropeptide α-MSH, made by POMC neurons, plays a key role in energy homeostasis by mediating the actions of leptin and likely participates in the control of reproduction. However, its role in the metabolic regulation of puberty and interplay with kisspeptin, an essential puberty-regulating neuropeptide encoded by Kiss1, remain largely unknown. We aim here to unveil the potential contribution of central α-MSH signaling in the metabolic control of puberty by addressing its role in mediating the pubertal effects of leptin and its potential interaction with kisspeptin.

TL;DR: The clinical presentation of CI is very heterogeneous, perhaps explaining why clinical suspicion of this disease is so low and the presence of IRCI, and occurrence of peritoneal signs or onset of CI as severe abdominal pain without bleeding, should alert the physician to a potentially unfavorable course.
Abstract: Background. There is a lack of prospective studies evaluating the natural history of colonic ischaemia (CI). We performed such a study to evaluate the clinical presentation, outcome, and mortality as well as clinical variables associated with poor prognosis. Methods. An open, prospective, and multicentre study was conducted in 24 Spanish hospitals serving a population of 3.5 million people. The study included only patients who met criteria for definitive or probable CI. A website (www.colitisisquemica.org) provided logistical support. Results. A total of 364 patients met criteria for inclusion. CI was suspected clinically in only 24.2% of cases. The distribution of clinical patterns was as follows: reversible colopathy (26.1%), transient colitis (43.7%), gangrenous colitis (9.9%), fulminant pancolitis (2.5%), and chronic segmental colitis (17.9%). A total of 47 patients (12.9%) had an unfavorable outcome as defined by mortality and/or the need for surgery. Multivariate analysis identified the fol...
