Abstract: This paper employs previously developed modeling, validation, and stimulation tools to address, for the first time, the realistic macroscopic simulation of a real large-scale motorway network. More specifically, the macroscopic simulator METANET, involving a second-order traffic flow model as well as network-relevant extensions, is utilized. A rigorous quantitative validation procedure is applied to individual network links, and subsequently a heuristic qualitative validation procedure is employed at a network level. The large-scale motorway network around Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is considered in this investigation. The main goal of the paper is to describe the application approach and procedures and to demonstrate the accuracy and usefulness of macroscopic modeling tools for large-scale motorway networks.

Abstract: Electromagnetic metamaterials are composed of periodically arranged artificial structures. They show peculiar properties, such as negative refraction and super-lensing, which are not seen in natural materials. The conventional metamaterials require both negativeand negative μ to achieve negative refraction. Chiral metamaterial is a new class of metamaterials offering a simpler route to negative refraction. In this paper, we briefly review the history of metamaterials and the developments on chiral metamaterials. We study the wave propagation properties in chiral metamaterials and show that negative refraction can be realized in chiral metamaterials with a strong chirality, with neithernor μ negative required. We have developed a retrieval procedure, adopting a uniaxial bi-isotropic model to calculate the effective parameters such as n±, κ, � and μ of the chiral metamaterials. Our work on the design, numerical calculations and experimental measurements of chiral metamaterials is introduced. Strong chiral behaviors such as optical activity and circular dichroism are observed and negative refraction is obtained for circularly polarized waves in these chiral metamaterials. We show that 3D isotropic chiral metamaterials can eventually be realized.

Abstract: Detection and estimation problems in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar have recently drawn considerable interest in the signal processing community. Radar has long been a staple of signal processing, and MIMO radar presents challenges and opportunities in adapting classical radar imaging tools and developing new ones. Our aim in this article is to showcase the potential of tensor algebra and multidimensional harmonic retrieval (HR) in signal processing for MIMO radar. Tensor algebra and multidimensional HR are relatively mature topics, albeit still on the fringes of signal processing research. We show they are in fact central for target localization in a variety of pertinent MIMO radar scenarios. Tensor algebra naturally comes into play when the coherent processing interval comprises multiple pulses, or multiple transmit and receive subarrays are used (multistatic configuration). Multidimensional harmonic structure emerges for far-field uniform linear transmit/receive array configurations, also taking into account Doppler shift; and hybrid models arise in-between. This viewpoint opens the door for the application and further development of powerful algorithms and identifiability results for MIMO radar. Compared to the classical radar-imaging-based methods such as Capon or MUSIC, these algebraic techniques yield improved performance, especially for closely spaced targets, at modest complexity.
