Abstract: Obesity is a major health concern worldwide which is associated with increased risk of chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The elucidation of the molecular mechanisms involved in adipogenesis and obesogenesis is of essential importance as it could lead to the identification of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets for the development of anti-obesity drugs. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been shown to play regulatory roles in several biological processes. They have become a growing research field and consist of promising pharmaceutical targets in various fields such as cancer, metabolism, etc. The present study investigated the possible implication of miRNAs in adipose tissue during the development of obesity using as a model the C57BLJ6 mice fed a high-fat diet. C57BLJ6 wild type male mice were fed either a standard (SD) or a high-fat diet (HFD) for 5 months. Total RNA was prepared from white adipose tissue and was used for microRNA profiling and qPCR. Twenty-two of the most differentially expressed miRNAs, as identified by the microRNA profiling were validated using qPCR. The results of the present study confirmed previous results. The up-regulation of mmu-miR-222 and the down-regulation of mmu-miR-200b, mmu-miR-200c, mmu-miR-204, mmu-miR-30a*, mmu-miR-193, mmu-miR-378 and mmu-miR-30e* after HFD feeding has also been previously reported. On the other hand, we show for the first time the up-regulation of mmu-miR-342-3p, mmu-miR-142-3p, mmu-miR-142-5p, mmu-miR-21, mmu-miR-146a, mmu-miR-146b, mmu-miR-379 and the down-regulation of mmu-miR-122, mmu-miR-133b, mmu-miR-1, mmu-miR-30a*, mmu-miR-192 and mmu-miR-203 during the development of obesity. However, future studies are warranted in order to understand the exact role that miRNAs play in adipogenesis and obesity.

Abstract: We exhibit a subset of a finite Abelian group, which tiles the group by translation, and such that its tiling complements do not have a common spectrum (orthogonal basis for their L-2 space consisting of group characters). This disproves the Universal Spectrum Conjecture of Lagarias and Wang [7]. Further, we construct a set in some finite Abelian group, which tiles the group but has no spectrum. We extend this last example to the groups Z(d) and R-d (for d >= 5) thus disproving one direction of the Spectral Set Conjecture of Fuglede [1]. The other direction was recently disproved by Tao [12].

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a higher-order MRF optimization framework. On the one hand, it is very general; we thus use it to derive a generic optimizer that can be applied to almost any higher-order MRF and that provably optimizes a dual relaxation related to the input MRF problem. On the other hand, it is also extremely flexible and thus can be easily adapted to yield far more powerful algorithms when dealing with subclasses of high-order MRFs. We thus introduce a new powerful class of high-order potentials, which are shown to offer enough expressive power and to be useful for many vision tasks. To address them, we derive, based on the same framework, a novel and extremely efficient message-passing algorithm, which goes beyond the aforementioned generic optimizer and is able to deliver almost optimal solutions of very high quality. Experimental results on vision problems demonstrate the extreme effectiveness of our approach. For instance, we show that in some cases we are even able to compute the global optimum for NP-hard higher-order MRFs in a very efficient manner.

Abstract: In the last two decades, advances in synthetic, experimental and modeling/simulation methodologies have considerably enhanced our understanding of colloidal suspension rheology and put the field at the forefront of soft matter research. Recent accomplishments include the ability to tailor the flow of colloidal materials via controlled changes of particle microstructure and interactions. Whereas hard sphere suspensions have been the most widely studied colloidal system, there is no richer type of particles than soft colloids in this respect. Yet, despite the remarkable progress in the field, many outstanding challenges remain in our quest to link particle microstructure to macroscopic properties and eventually design appropriate soft composites. Addressing them will provide the route towards novel responsive systems with hierarchical structures and multiple functionalities. Here we discuss the key structural and rheological parameters which determine the tunable rheology of dense soft deformable colloids. We restrict our discussion to non-crystallizing suspensions of spherical particles without electrostatic or enthalpic interactions.

Abstract: Two years of harmonized aerosol number size distribution data from 24 European field monitoring sites have been analysed. The results give a comprehensive overview of the European near surface aerosol particle number concentrations and number size distributions between 30 and 500 nm of dry particle diameter. Spatial and temporal distribution of aerosols in the particle sizes most important for climate applications are presented. We also analyse the annual, weekly and diurnal cycles of the aerosol number concentrations, provide log-normal fitting parameters for median number size distributions, and give guidance notes for data users. Emphasis is placed on the usability of results within the aerosol modelling community. We also show that the aerosol number concentrations of Aitken and accumulation mode particles (with 100 nm dry diameter as a cut-off between modes) are related, although there is significant variation in the ratios of the modal number concentrations. Different aerosol and station types are distinguished from this data and this methodology has potential for further categorization of stations aerosol number size distribution types. The European submicron aerosol was divided into characteristic types: Central European aerosol, characterized by single mode median size distributions, unimodal number concentration histograms and low variability in CCN-sized aerosol number concentrations; Nordic aerosol with low number concentrations, although showing pronounced seasonal variation of especially Aitken mode particles; Mountain sites (altitude over 1000 m a.s.l.) with a strong seasonal cycle in aerosol number concentrations, high variability, and very low median number concentrations. Southern and Western European regions had fewer stations, which decreases the regional representativeness of these results. Aerosol number concentrations over the Britain and Ireland had very high variance and there are indications of mixed air masses from several source regions; the Mediterranean aerosol exhibit high seasonality, and a strong accumulation mode in the summer. The highest concentrations were observed at the JRC station in Northern Italy with high accumulation mode number concentrations in the winter. The aerosol number concentrations at the Arctic station Zeppelin in Ny-Alesund in Svalbard have also a strong seasonal cycle, with higher concentrations of accumulation mode particles in winter, and dominating summer Aitken mode indicating more recently formed particles. Observed particles did not show any statistically significant regional work-week or weekday related variation in number concentrations studied. Analysis products are made for open-access to the research community, available in a freely accessible internet site. The results give to the modelling community a reliable, easy-to-use and freely available comparison dataset of aerosol size distributions. © Author(s) 2011.
