Abstract: Serum biomarkers are an important tool in the baseline risk assessment and diagnosis of cardiovascular disease in cancer patients receiving cardiotoxic cancer treatments. Increases in cardiac biomarkers including cardiac troponin and natriuretic peptides can be used to guide initiation of cardioprotective treatments for cancer patients during treatment and to monitor the response to cardioprotective treatments, and they also offer prognostic value. This position statement examines the role of cardiac biomarkers in the management of cancer patients. The Cardio-Oncology Study Group of the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in collaboration with the Cardio-Oncology Council of the ESC have evaluated the current evidence for the role of cardiovascular biomarkers in cancer patients before, during and after cardiotoxic cancer therapies. The characteristics of the main two biomarkers troponin and natriuretic peptides are discussed, the link to the mechanisms of cardiovascular toxicity, and the evidence for their clinical use in surveillance during and after anthracycline chemotherapy, trastuzumab and HER2-targeted therapies, vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitors, proteasome inhibitors, immune checkpoint inhibitors, cyclophosphamide and radiotherapy. Novel surveillance clinical pathways integrating cardiac biomarkers for cancer patients receiving anthracycline chemotherapy or trastuzumab biomarkers are presented and future direction in cardio-oncology biomarker research is discussed.

Abstract: quantitative analysis of linear temperature-dependent coupled thermoelectronic diffusion waves in the generation of the laserinduced IR photothermal radiometric signal from a photoexcited, plasmawave- dominated, semi-infinite semiconductor Si wafer is presented. The strong coupling between the (usually assumed decoupled) carrier and thermal wave transport equations is accounted for explicitly and the range of violation of the Vasil’ev-Sandomirskii condition is studied. Thermoelectronic coupling is found to degrade the sensitivity of the plasmaoriginating IR radiometric signal in high-quality process Si substrates at elevated background temperatures and high modulation frequencies, with the exception of highly degenerate plasmas

Abstract: A spatially distributed set of sources is creating data that must be delivered to a spatially distributed set of sinks. A network of wireless nodes is responsible for sensing the data at the sources, transporting them over a wireless channel, and delivering them to the sinks. The problem is to find the optimal placement of nodes, so that a minimum number of them is needed. The critical assumption is made that the network is massively dense, i.e., there are so many sources, sinks, and wireless nodes, that it does not make sense to discuss in terms of microscopic parameters, such as their individual placements, but rather in terms of macroscopic parameters, such as their spatial densities. Assuming a particular interference-limited, capacity-achieving physical layer, and specifying that nodes only need to transport the data (and not to sense them at the sources, or deliver them at the sinks once their location is reached), the optimal node placement induces a traffic flow that is identical to the electrostatic field created if the sources and sinks are replaced by a corresponding distribution of positive and negative charges. Assuming a general model for the physical layer, and specifying that nodes must not only transport the data, but also sense them at the sources and deliver them at the sinks, the optimal placement of nodes is given by a scalar nonlinear partial differential equation found by calculus of variations techniques. The proposed formulation and derived equations can help in the design of large wireless sensor networks that are deployed in the most efficient manner, not only avoiding the formation of bottlenecks, but also striking the optimal balance between reducing congestion and having the data packets follow short routes.

Abstract: In this paper, I discuss globalisation as an empirical reality that is in a complex relation to its corresponding discourse and in a critical distance from the cosmopolitan ideal. I argue that failure to grasp the distinctions between globalisation, globalism, and cosmopolitanism derives from mistaken identifications of the Is with the Ought and leads to naive and ethnocentric glorifications of the potentialities of globalisation. Conversely, drawing the appropriate distinctions helps us articulate a more critical approach to contemporary cultural phenomena, and reconsider the current place and potential role of education within the context of global affairs. From this perspective, the antagonistic impulses cultivated by globalisation and some globalist discourse are singled out and targeted via a radicalization of educational orientations. The final suggestion of the article concerns the vision of a more cosmopolitically sensitive education.
