Abstract: Background. This study, which was conducted in Cyprus, combines the theoretical framework of attribution research with that of parent involvement literature. Aim. Its aim was to investigate the role of parental attributions as predictors of parental involvement in their child's educational process and to examine the influence of both of these factors on the child's actual school achievement. Sample. The parents of 473 sixth grade students in 22 public elementary schools participated in the study. Data were also collected from students and their teachers. Method. Participating parents completed questionnaires regarding their attributions of their child's achievement and their own degree of involvement in his/her life. Results. It was found that parents who believed that their own role was important for their child's achievement tended to be more controlling and to be keener in developing the child's interests. Also, the parental attribution of the child's achievement to the child's own effort was positively related to the child's actual achievement results. Finally, it was found that the child's actual school achievement was directly related to the parental interest-developing behaviour, but it was not significantly related to the parental controlling behaviour. Conclusions. Through a structural equation model and a path analysis procedure, it was shown that a line of influence exists between parental attribution style, the type and degree of parental involvement and the child's actual academic achievement.

Abstract: This paper describes an application model and software technology that makes it possible to run World Wide Web applications in wide area wireless networks. Web technology in conjunction with today's mobile devices (e.g., laptops, notebooks, personal digital assistants) and the emerging wireless technologies (e.g., digital cellular, packet radio, CDPD) offer the potential for unprecedented access to data and applications by mobile workers. Yet, the limited bandwidth, high latency, high cost, and poor reliability of today's wireless wide-area networks greatly inhibits (to the point of infeasibility) supporting such applications over wireless networks. This paper presents the Client/Intercept computational model that makes it possible to run such distributed applications efficiently in wide area wireless networks. Furthermore, it presents WebExpress, a client/intercept based system for optimizing Web browsing, that reduces data volume and latency of wireless communications by intercepting the HTTP data stream and performing various optimizations including: file caching, forms differencing, protocol reduction, and the elimination of redundant HTTP header transmission. This paper describes these optimizations and presents some experimental results.

Abstract: Despite the limited success of grouping students by attainment in enhancing educational achievement for all, this practice is still widely followed in European schools. Aiming at identifying successful educational actions that promote high academic achievement and social inclusion and cohesion, part of the EU-sponsored Europe-wide INCLUD-ED project analysed different ways of grouping students in classrooms. A classification was developed that distinguishes between three ways according to two dimensions – homogeneity/heterogeneity and use of human resources. This classification differentiates among mixture, streaming, and inclusion. In this paper, an example of inclusive action, Interactive Groups (IGs), is explored in depth. Based on grouping students heterogeneously and including adults from the community in the classroom, IGs address educational inequalities and enhance learning for students participating in them. Abstract: A search for narrow resonances in the dijet mass spectrum is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 inverse pb collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level (CL) are presented on the product of the resonance cross section, branching fraction into dijets, and acceptance, separately for decays into quark-quark, quark-gluon, or gluon-gluon pairs. The data exclude new particles predicted in the following models at the 95% CL: string resonances, with mass less than 2.50 TeV, excited quarks, with mass less than 1.58 TeV, and axigluons, colorons, and E_6 diquarks, in specific mass intervals. This extends previously published limits on these models.

Abstract: We describe and analyze the complexity of verifying the notion of infinite-step opacity in systems that are modeled as non-deterministic finite automata with partial observation on their transitions. Specifically, a system is infinite-step opaque if the entrance of the system state, at any particular instant, to a set of secret states remains opaque (uncertain), for the length of the system operation, to an intruder who observes system activity through some projection map. Infinite-step opacity can be used to characterize the security requirements in many applications, including encryption using pseudo-random generators, coverage properties in sensor networks, and anonymity requirements in protocols for web transactions. We show that infinite-step opacity can be verified via the construction of a set of appropriate initial state estimators and provide illustrative examples. We also establish that the verification of infinite-step opacity is a PSPACE-hard problem.
