Abstract: Children and adolescents must be examined often for occlusal caries. Diagnosis of fissure caries is difficult especially when the tooth surface appears seemingly intact. It has been shown that using traditional clinical methods, as little as 20% of teeth with fissure caries under intact surfaces were correctly recognised as such. Therefore, new methods for increasing the accuracy of diagnosis have been sought for years. Recently, a new device, based on fluorescence measurements, was introduced. The purpose of this study was to test the device under in vivo conditions in order to provide recommendations for its use in the dental office. Seven general dental practitioners examined a total of 332 occlusal surfaces in 240 patients. Caries extent was determined for each site after operative intervention (='gold standard'). Clinical inspection and analysis of bitewing radiographs exhibited statistically significant lower sensitivities (31-63%) than did the DIAGNOdent device (sensitivity > or = 92%). It is recommended that the laser device is used in the decision-making process in relation to the diagnosis of occlusal caries as a second opinion in cases of doubt after visual inspection.

Abstract: With the advent of cloning, sequencing, and patchclamping techniques, knowledge of the postsynaptic actions of amino acid neurotransmitters has undergone a dramatic advance. The primary sequences of the inhibitory receptors for γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) (Schofield et al., 1987) and glycine (Grenningloh et al., 1987) are now established, and patch-clamp analysis has elucidated many of the factors that regulate the opening of their ion channels. The excitatory glutamate receptors are being extensively characterized at both the pharmacological (reviewed by Foster and Fagg, 1984) and the electrophysiological (reviewed by Cull-Candy and Usowicz, 1987) level. In this climate, it is perhaps surprising that the fundamental presynaptic release mechanism for the amino acid neurotransmitters remains controversial.

Abstract: This paper studies the performance of 60 European funds from four countries. The paper extends the UK matched pair approach for fund evaluation developed by Mallin et al. (1995) to a European setting. The findings suggest that there is no difference between ethical and non-ethical funds according to the performance measures employed. Neither type of fund displayed any ability to time the market. Finally, the results indicate that the management fee is a significant explanatory variable for the Jensen measure as Chen et al. (1992) and Grinblatt and Titman (1994) suggested.

Abstract: IN the hereditary blistering condition epidermolysis bullosa simplex, the skin blisters on trauma following rupture of epidermal basal cells. Clinical variations range from severely incapacitating, especially in early childhood, to mild forms that may not even present clinically. Dowling–Meara epidermolysis bullosa simplex is characterized by clusters of epidermal blisters and keratin clumping in the cytoplasm1; recent reports describe potentially causal mutations in keratin 14 (refs 2, 3). Here we describe a "complementary' mutation at the other end of the other keratin expressed by these cells (K5, coexpressed with K14), a change from a Glu to a Gly in the helix termination peptide, detected by altered antibody binding and confirmed by sequencing using the polymerase chain reaction. The two conserved helix boundary peptides are predicted to be essential for filament assembly, and the requirement for two complementary (type I and type II) keratins is absolute. Epidermolysis bullosa simplex diseases demonstrate the function of the keratin cytoskeleton in resisting compaction stresses which otherwise lead to cell lysis.
