Abstract: A theory of optical pulse propagation in cascaded transmission systems that are based on the dispersion-compensating fiber technique is developed. The existence of two scales associated with fiber dispersion and system residual dispersion leads to a simple model for the averaged pulse dynamics. In the particular case of practical importance, the averaged pulse dynamics is governed by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The pulse transmission stability is examined.

Abstract: The pathogenesis of many diseases is most closely connected with aberrantly regulated apoptotic cell death. The past 15 years have witnessed an explosion in the basic knowledge of mechanisms that regulate apoptosis and the mediators that either trigger or inhibit cell death. Consequently, great interest has emerged in devising therapeutic strategies for modulating the key molecules of life-and-death decisions. Numerous novel approaches are currently being followed employing gene therapy and antisense strategies, recombinant biologics or classical organic and combinatorial chemistry in order to target specific apoptotic regulators. Although drug development is still in its infancy, several therapeutics have progressed to clinical testing or have even been approved in record time. This review outlines the recent advances in the field of apoptosis-based therapies and explores some highlights of a very active field of drug development.

Abstract: In this review we present a summary of recent progress achieved in examining the equilibrium and dynamical properties of concentrated solutions of two novel kinds of soft matter systems: star-shaped polymers and starburst molecules known as dendrimers. The two systems share a host of interesting properties. The both consist of highly branched polymers, they allow for tuning of their properties through modification of the macromolecular architecture and they are both representatives of a quite novel class of colloidal particles, termed ultrasoft colloids. On the other hand there are also important differences, reflecting the fundamental difference in their architecture. It will be shown that a combination of scattering techniques and rheology with computer simulations and analytical methods from the realm of theoretical physics can shed light on the unusual properties of such systems. In this fashion, new ways appear for the manipulation of soft matter systems under external influences and promising perspectives for the fabrication of new materials are opened up and the versatility in manipulating soft matter is underlined.

Abstract: The metagenomes of complex microbial communities are rich sources of novel biocatalysts. We exploited the metagenome of a mixed microbial population for isolation of more than 15 different genes encoding novel biocatalysts by using a combined cultivation and direct cloning strategy. A 16S rRNA sequence analysis revealed the presence of hitherto uncultured microbes closely related to the genera Pseudomonas, Agrobacterium, Xanthomonas, Microbulbifer, and Janthinobacterium. Total genomic DNA from this bacterial community was used to construct cosmid DNA libraries, which were functionally searched for novel enzymes of biotechnological value. Our searches in combination with cosmid sequencing resulted in identification of four clones encoding 12 putative agarase genes, most of which were organized in clusters consisting of two or three genes. Interestingly, nine of these agarase genes probably originated from gene duplications. Furthermore, we identified by DNA sequencing several other biocatalyst-encoding genes, including genes encoding a putative stereoselective amidase (amiA), two cellulases (gnuB and uvs080), an α-amylase (amyA), a 1,4-α-glucan branching enzyme (amyB), and two pectate lyases (pelA and uvs119). Also, a conserved cluster of two lipase genes was identified, which was linked to genes encoding a type I secretion system. The novel gene aguB was overexpressed in Escherichia coli, and the enzyme activities were determined. Finally, we describe more than 162 kb of DNA sequence that provides a strong platform for further characterization of this microbial consortium.

Abstract: . Purpose: To evaluate the relationship between signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED) in a clinic-based population. Methods: In a retrospective analysis, clinical signs and symptoms were evaluated for 344 subjects (n = 82, normal; n = 263, dry eye), across 11 sites from the EU and United States. Pearson correlations between signs and symptoms (r2) and an independent components analysis (ICA) mixing matrix were derived from the data set. Similar analysis was performed on an independent data set from 200 subjects in a previous study in Munich, Germany. Results: No correlations above r2 = 0.17 were found between any signs and symptoms, except for corneal and conjunctival staining, which reported an r2 = 0.36. In the multisite study, the average r2 for osmolarity (0.07), tear breakup time (0.12), Schirmer test (0.09), corneal (0.16) and conjunctival staining (0.17), meibomian grading (0.11) and Ocular Surface Disease Index® (0.11) were consistently low. Among patients who showed evidence of DED by consensus of clinical signs, only 57% reported symptoms consistent with a diagnosis of DED. Similar results were observed in the Munich-based study data set. Each component of the ICA mixing matrix exhibited minimal residual information. Conclusions: No consistent relationship was found between common signs and symptoms of DED. Each type of measurement provides distinct information about the condition of the ocular surface. These results also demonstrate that symptoms alone are insufficient for the diagnosis and management of DED and argue for a consensus of clinical signs that better reflect all aspects of the disease.
