Abstract: We calculate the optimized geometry and the corresponding electronic structure of Li ions doped in a small graphite cluster with dangling bonds or hydrogen terminations at the edge surrounding the cluster. The calculations imply both covalent and ionic bonds of Li ions to carbon atoms, which may be relevant to explaining the broad signal of the 7Li NMR Knight shift spectra. Li intercalation, in particular, is possible even at the hydrogen-terminated edges. Because of the finite size effect of the cluster, the ionicity of intercalated Li ions has a large distribution of values, ranging from positive values close to that in graphite intercalation compounds to even slightly negative values, depending on the bonding geometry. We propose that the cluster edge surface plays a special role in accommodating excess Li ions in the disordered graphite system.

TL;DR: It is found that the incorporation of inorganic nanoparticles into photopolymer leads to the effective suppression of these thermal changes, thereby extending the range of operating temperatures for their use in photonic applications.
Abstract: We examine thermal distortions of volume holograms recorded in (meth)acrylate photopolymers doped with SiO(2) or ZrO(2) nanoparticles. A holographic method is used to evaluate the temperature-induced Bragg-angle detuning of recorded volume holograms as a result of thermally induced refractive index and dimensional changes. It is found that the incorporation of inorganic nanoparticles into photopolymer leads to the effective suppression of these thermal changes, thereby extending the range of operating temperatures for their use in photonic applications.

TL;DR: It is shown that domain wall motion can be induced at current densities 40% below J(th)(0) when an external magnetic field of the order of the domain wall pinning field is applied, and that the additive velocities provide a unique way of simultaneously determining the spin polarization of current and the Gilbert damping constant.
Abstract: Current-induced magnetic domain wall motion can be triggered by an applied magnetic field, and its motion is described by the vector sum of the velocities imparted by current and magnetic field driving terms.

TL;DR: The effectiveness of well-tempered Gaussian basis sets has been tested for the atoms He-Ar, Ag, and Xe in this paper, and it has been found that orbital exponents optimized through the welltempered scheme for non-relativistic atoms can be carried over to relativistic calculations to produce wavefunctions close to the Hartree-Fock limit.
