TL;DR: It is shown that the polymerization shrinkage can be reduced as low as 0.3% at the nanoparticle concentration of 35 vol.
Abstract: We demonstrate substantial shrinkage suppression of nanoparticle-polymer composite transmission gratings by use of the step-growth polymerization mechanism. It is shown that the polymerization shrinkage can be reduced as low as 0.3% at the nanoparticle concentration of 35 vol. % by which the refractive index modulation and the material sensitivity are maximized to be 8×10−3 and 1014 cm/J, respectively, in the green. Our results offer a noticeable advance in the development of holographic data storage materials.

TL;DR: In this article, a 5.8h observation period centered at 11:25 UT on Nov. 18, 1999, in Japan was used to detect five brightening streaks observed on the night side of the Moon during the 1999 Leonid meteor shower.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used simultaneous ground-based, all-sky camera observations from a geomagnetically conjugate Iceland-Syowa Station pair to demonstrate that the auroral beads, whose wavelength is ∼30-50 km, evolve synchronously in the northern and southern hemispheres and have remarkable interhemispheric similarities.
Abstract: [1] Auroral beads, i.e., azimuthally arrayed bright spots resembling a pearl necklace, have recently drawn attention as a possible precursor of auroral substorms. We used simultaneous, ground-based, all-sky camera observations from a geomagnetically conjugate Iceland-Syowa Station pair to demonstrate that the auroral beads, whose wavelength is ∼30–50 km, evolve synchronously in the northern and southern hemispheres and have remarkable interhemispheric similarities. In both hemispheres: 1) they appeared almost at the same time; 2) their longitudinal wave number was similar ∼300–400, corresponding bead separation being ∼1° in longitude; 3) they started developing into a larger scale spiral form at the same time; 4) their propagation speeds and their temporal evolution were almost identical. These interhemispheric similarities provide strong evidence that there is a common driver in the magnetotail equatorial region that controls the major temporal evolution of the auroral beads; thus, the magnetosphere plays a primary role in structuring the initial brightening arc in this scale size.

TL;DR: Heuristic algorithms for SCP are surveyed focusing mainly on contributions of mathematical programming techniques to heuristics, and their performance through experimental analysis is illustrated.
Abstract: The set covering problem (SCP) is one of representative combinatorial optimization problems, which has many practical applications. The continuous development of mathematical programming has derived a number of impressive heuristic algorithms as well as exact branch-and-bound algorithms, which can solve huge SCP instances of bus, railway and airline crew scheduling problems. We survey heuristic algorithms for SCP focusing mainly on contributions of mathematical programming techniques to heuristics, and illustrate their performance through experimental analysis.

TL;DR: In this article, the superplastic properties and microstructural evolution of a 7055 aluminum alloy were examined in tension at temperatures ranging from 300 to 450°C and strain rates ranging from 2.7 to 5.6.
Abstract: The superplastic properties and microstructural evolution of a 7055 aluminum alloy was examined in tension at temperatures ranging from 300 to 450 °C and strain rates ranging from 2.7 × 10 −5 to 5.6 × 10 −2 s −1 . A refined microstructure with an average grain size of ∼1.4 μm and a portion of high-angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) of ∼67% was produced in sheets by equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) followed by isothermal rolling (IR) at 250 °C. The alloy exhibited a maximum elongation-to-failure of ∼820% at a temperature of 450 °C and an initial strain rate of 5.6 × 10 −3 s −1 . Superplastic elongation of ∼670% was recorded at strain rates higher than 10 −2 s −1 , where the strain rate sensitivity coefficient was around 0.44. The relationship between superplastic ductilities and microstructure stability was analyzed. It was shown that increasing the portion of HAGBs by IR results in enhancement of superplastic properties.
