TL;DR: In this paper, the use of a coherent digital receiver for compensation of linear transmission impairments and polarization demultiplexing in a transmission system compatible with a future 100-Gb/s Ethernet standard is discussed.
Abstract: We discuss the use of a coherent digital receiver for the compensation of linear transmission impairments and polarization demultiplexing in a transmission system compatible with a future 100-Gb/s Ethernet standard. We present experimental results on the transmission performance of 111 Gbit/s POLMUX-RZ-DQPSK. For a dense WDM setup with channels carrying 111 Gbit/s with a 50 GHz channel spacing (2.0 bits/s/Hz), we show the feasibility of 2375 km transmission. This is enabled through coherent detection which results in excellent noise performance, and subsequent electronic equalization which provides the high tolerance to polarization mode dispersion and chromatic dispersion (CD). Furthermore, we discuss the impact of sampling and digital signal processing with either 1 or 2 samples/bit. We show that when combined with low-pass electrical filtering, 1 sample/bit signal processing is sufficient to obtain a large tolerance towards CD. The proposed modulation and detection techniques enable 111 Gbit/s transmission that is directly compatible with the existing 10 Gbit/s infrastructure.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors synthesized nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe]-LDH nanosheets with different interlayer anions to probe their role in water oxidation catalysis.
Abstract: We synthesized nickel–iron layered double hydroxide ([NiFe]-LDH) nanosheets with different interlayer anions to probe their role in water oxidation catalysis. In alkaline electrolyte in ambient air, carbonate rapidly replaced other interlayer anions and catalytic activity was highest. Electrocatalytic water oxidation in virtually carbonate-free alkaline electrolyte revealed that activity was a function of anion basicity. Our [NiFe]-LDH nanosheets, prepared by pulsed laser ablation in liquids, were regenerated in carbonate-containing aqueous KOH. Anion binding motifs were assessed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations, suggesting that nitrite species bound to edge-site Fe in the precatalyst correlated with higher water oxidation activity.

TL;DR: The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman and X-ray analyses of the precipitated layers indicate that the HCO3- content in SBF influences the composition and structure of the calcium phosphates obtained.

TL;DR: It is reported that TiO2 nanotube arrays, converted by a high pressure H2 treatment to anatase-like "black titania", show a high open-circuit photocatalytic hydrogen production rate without the presence of a cocatalyst.
Abstract: Here we report that TiO2 nanotube (NT) arrays, converted by a high pressure H2 treatment to anatase-like “black titania”, show a high open-circuit photocatalytic hydrogen production rate without the presence of a cocatalyst. Tubes converted to black titania using classic reduction treatments (e.g., atmospheric pressure H2/Ar annealing) do not show this effect. The main difference caused by the high H2 pressure annealing is the resulting room-temperature stable, isolated Ti3+ defect-structure created in the anatase nanotubes, as evident from electron spin resonance (ESR) investigations. This feature, absent for conventional reduction, seems thus to be responsible for activating intrinsic, cocatalytic centers that enable the observed high open-circuit hydrogen generation.
