Abstract: Biochemical markers have a central position in the diagnosis and management of patients in clinical medicine, and also in clinical research and drug development, also for brain disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is frequently used for measurement of low-abundance biomarkers. However, the quality of ELISA methods varies, which may introduce both systematic and random errors. This urges the need for more rigorous control of assay performance, regardless of its use in a research setting, in clinical routine, or drug development. The aim of a method validation is to present objective evidence that a method fulfills the requirements for its intended use. Although much has been published on which parameters to investigate in a method validation, less is available on a detailed level on how to perform the corresponding experiments. To remedy this, standard operating procedures (SOPs) with step-by-step instructions for a number of different validation parameters is included in the present work together with a validation report template, which allow for a well-ordered presentation of the results. Even though the SOPs were developed with the intended use for immunochemical methods and to be used for multicenter evaluations, most of them are generic and can be used for other technologies as well.

Abstract: Interactive direct volume rendering has yet been restricted to high-end graphics workstations and special-purpose hardware, due to the large amount of trilinear interpolations, that are necessary to obtain high image quality. Implementations that use the 2D-texture capabilities of standard PC hardware, usually render object-aligned slices in order to substitute trilinear by bilinear interpolation. However the resulting images often contain visual artifacts caused by the lack of spatial interpolation. In this paper we propose new rendering techniques that significantly improve both performance and image quality of the 2D-texture based approach. We will show how in ulti-texturing capabilitiesof modern consumer PC graphboards are exploited to enable in teractive high quality volume visualization on low-cost hardware. Furthermore we demonstrate how multi-stage rasterization hardware can be used to efficiently render shaded isosurfaces and to compute diffuse illumination for semi-transparent volume rendering at interactive frame rates.

Abstract: While the principle of competition has long been found to be conducive to innovation, community-based innovation contests additionally offer the possibilities of interaction and cooperation among participants. This duality makes innovation contests an interesting field for both academia and practice. However, a surge in practical implementations stands in contrast to a still restricted body of academic knowledge in the field. To close this gap, drawing on a boundary spanning perspective, we examine if and how cooperation in the competitive setting of innovation contests leads to innovativeness. Cooperative orientation of contest participants is explored within a community-based innovation contest run in 2009 at one of the largest universities in Germany. We analyse a complete set of data collected during the contest, data from a follow-up survey among individual participants (n = 943), as well as video and audio footage from four focus groups. Findings suggest that a very high as well as a very low degree of cooperative orientation result in a high degree of innovativeness, while a medium degree of cooperative orientation results in a low degree of innovativeness. Additionally, this research extends the concept of boundary spanning by identifying two subtypes: proactive and reactive boundary spanning.

Abstract: For the first time, we practically demonstrate that Intel SGX enclaves are vulnerable against cache-timing attacks. As a case study, we present an access-driven cache-timing attack on AES when running inside an Intel SGX enclave. Using Neve and Seifert's elimination method, as well as a cache probing mechanism relying on Intel PMC, we are able to extract the AES secret key in less than 10 seconds by investigating 480 encrypted blocks on average. The AES implementation we attack is based on a Gladman AES implementation taken from an older version of OpenSSL, which is known to be vulnerable to cache-timing attacks. In contrast to previous works on cache-timing attacks, our attack is executed with root privileges running on the same host as the vulnerable enclave. Intel SGX, however, was designed to precisely protect applications against such root-level attacks. As a consequence, we show that SGX cannot withstand its designated attacker model when it comes to side-channel vulnerabilities. To the contrary, the attack surface for side-channels increases dramatically in the scenario of SGX due to the power of root-level attackers, for example, by exploiting the accuracy of PMC, which is restricted to kernel code.

Abstract: In a prospective study, 20 patients who underwent harvesting of chin grafts as outpatients, were followed up for 12 months (3 further patients with incomplete follow-up data were excluded from the study). Preoperatively and 7 days, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively, follow-up data were assessed. Evaluation of the superficial sensory function of the inferior alveolar nerve was determined by the Pointed-Blunt Test and the Two-Point-Discrimination Test. Sensory disturbances were objectively assessed by testing thermal sensitivity with the "Pain and Thermal Sensitivity" Test (PATH Test). In addition, evaluation of the pulp sensitivity of teeth 35-45 was carried out by cold vitality testing. One week postoperatively, 8 patients were affected by superficial sensory impairment. 8 nerve territories showed hypoaesthetic reactions and 5 showed hyperaesthetic reactions. After 12 months, two patients still suffered from hypoaesthesia of one side of the chin. There was a statistically significant sensitivity impairment of the chin for all patients comparing the preoperative data of the Two-Point-Discrimination Test (left/right median: 8.17/8.17 mm, interquartile range (IQR) 1.00/2.00 mm) with the first postoperative measurement (left/right median 9.00/8.33 mm, IQR 1.67/2.66 mm). Comparing the latter to the last postoperative measurement there was significant tendency for regeneration of a nerve function (left/right median 8.00/7.84 mm, IQR 0.66/2.00 mm). In the PATH Test all hypoaesthetic areas could be identified by a reduction of thermal sensitivity. After the first postoperative examination 21.6% (n=38/176) of the examined teeth had lost their pulp sensitivity. After 12 postoperative months 11.4% (n=20/176) still did not react sensitively. Many of these were canines (n=8/20). Comparing the preoperative to the first postoperative examination, there was a significant reduction of pulp sensitivity. However, statistically significant recovery until the last postoperative follow-up could not be detected. The assessed data show that patients have to be informed extensively about disturbances of the inferior alveolar nerve function lasting longer than 12 months. Moreover, the loss of pulp sensitivity is a very frequent event which has always to be taken into account. Considering the high rate of complications with harvesting of chin grafts, more prospective trials should be done to find out whether there are other donor sites for autogenous bone which put less strain on patients.
