Abstract: In this paper, we investigate resource allocation algorithm design for multicarrier non-orthogonal multiple access (MC-NOMA) systems employing a full-duplex (FD) base station for serving multiple half-duplex (HD) downlink and uplink users simultaneously. The proposed algorithm is obtained from the solution of a non-convex optimization problem for the maximization of the weighted sum system throughput. We apply monotonic optimization to develop an optimal joint power and subcarrier allocation policy. The optimal resource allocation policy serves as a system performance benchmark due to its high computational complexity. Furthermore, a suboptimal iterative scheme based on successive convex approximation is proposed to strike a balance between computational complexity and optimality. Our simulation results reveal that the proposed suboptimal algorithm achieves a close-to-optimal performance. In addition, FD MC-NOMA systems employing the proposed resource allocation algorithms provide a substantial system throughput improvement compared with conventional HD multicarrier orthogonal multiple access (MC-OMA) systems and other baseline schemes. In addition, our results unveil that FD MC-NOMA systems enable a fairer resource allocation compared with traditional HD MC-OMA systems.

Abstract: A subspace projection to improve channel estimation in massive multi-antenna systems is proposed and analyzed. Together with power-controlled hand-off, it can mitigate the pilot contamination problem without the need for coordination among cells. The proposed method is blind in the sense that it does not require pilot data to find the appropriate subspace. It is based on the theory of large random matrices that predicts that the eigenvalue spectra of large sample covariance matrices can asymptotically decompose into disjoint bulks as the matrix size grows large. Random matrix and free probability theory are utilized to predict under which system parameters such a bulk decomposition takes place. Simulation results are provided to confirm that the proposed method outperforms conventional linear channel estimation if bulk separation occurs.

Abstract: As a consequence of improved technology, there is growing clinical interest in the use of multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT) for non-invasive coronary angiography. Indeed, the accuracy of MDCT to detect or exclude coronary artery stenoses has been high in many published studies. This report of a Writing Group deployed by the Working Group Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac CT (WG 5) of the European Society of Cardiology and the European Council of Nuclear Cardiology summarizes the present state of cardiac CT technology, as well as the currently available data concerning its accuracy and applicability in certain clinical situations. Besides coronary CT angiography, the use of CT for the assessment of cardiac morphology and function, evaluation of perfusion and viability, and analysis of heart valves is discussed. In addition, recommendations for clinical applications of cardiac CT imaging are given and limitations of the technique are described.

Abstract: This Colloquium examines the field of the Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (EPR) gedanken experiment, from the original paper of Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen, through to modern theoretical proposals of how to realize both the continuous-variable and discrete versions of the EPR paradox. The relationship with entanglement and Bell's theorem are analyzed, and the progress to date towards experimental confirmation of the EPR paradox is summarized, with a detailed treatment of the continuous-variable paradox in laser-based experiments. Practical techniques covered include continuous-wave parametric amplifier and optical fiber quantum soliton experiments. Current proposals for extending EPR experiments to massive-particle systems are discussed, including spin squeezing, atomic position entanglement, and quadrature entanglement in ultracold atoms. Finally, applications of this technology to quantum key distribution, quantum teleportation, and entanglement swapping are examined.

Abstract: Objective To investigate the fate of apoptotic cells in the germinal centers (GCs) of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods Lymph node biopsy specimens obtained from 7 SLE patients with benign follicular hyperplasia, 5 non–SLE patients with benign follicular hyperplasia (non-SLE), 5 patients with malignant follicular lymphoma, and 3 patients with dermatopathic lymphadenitis were stained with monoclonal antibodies against macrophages (CD68) and follicular dendritic cells (CR2/CD21). TUNEL staining and transmission electron microscopy were performed to detect apoptotic cells. Confocal microscopy was used to evaluate the in vivo capacity of tingible body macrophages to remove apoptotic cell material. Results In a subgroup of patients with SLE, apoptotic cells accumulated in the GCs of the lymph nodes. The number of tingible body macrophages, which usually contained engulfed apoptotic nuclei, was significantly reduced in these patients. In contrast to what was observed in all controls, TUNEL-positive apoptotic material from SLE patients was observed to be directly associated with the surfaces of follicular dendritic cells (FDCs). Conclusion Our findings suggest that in a subgroup of SLE patients, apoptotic cells are not properly cleared by tingible body macrophages of the GCs. Consequently, nuclear autoantigens bind to FDCs and may thus provide survival signals for autoreactive B cells. This action may override an important control mechanism for B cell development, resulting in the loss of tolerance for nuclear antigens.
