Abstract: This work describes sequences of extended morphological transformations for filtering and classification of high-dimensional remotely sensed hyperspectral datasets. The proposed approaches are based on the generalization of concepts from mathematical morphology theory to multichannel imagery. A new vector organization scheme is described, and fundamental morphological vector operations are defined by extension. Extended morphological transformations, characterized by simultaneously considering the spatial and spectral information contained in hyperspectral datasets, are applied to agricultural and urban classification problems where efficacy in discriminating between subtly different ground covers is required. The methods are tested using real hyperspectral imagery collected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Jet Propulsion Laboratory Airborne Visible-Infrared Imaging Spectrometer and the German Aerospace Agency Digital Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (DAIS 7915). Experimental results reveal that, by designing morphological filtering methods that take into account the complementary nature of spatial and spectral information in a simultaneous manner, it is possible to alleviate the problems related to each of them when taken separately.

Abstract: The main design objective of photovoltaic (PV) systems has been, for a long time, to extract the maximum power from the PV array and inject it into the ac grid. Therefore, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of a uniformly irradiated PV array and the maximization of the conversion efficiency have been the main design issues. However, when the PV plant is connected to the grid, special attention has to be paid to the reliability of the system, the power quality, and the implementation of protection and grid synchronization functions. Modern power plants are required to maximize their energy production, requiring suitable control strategies to solve the problems related to the partial shading phenomena and different orientation of the PV modules toward the sun. Moreover, the new policy concerning the injection of reactive power into the grid makes the development of suitable topologies and control algorithms mandatory. A general view of actual solutions for applications of the PV energy systems is presented. This article covers several important issues, including the most reliable models used for simulation, which are useful in the design of control systems, and the MPPT function, particularly in distributed applications. The main topologies used in the PV power processing system and, finally, grid connection aspects are discussed, with emphasis on synchronization, protections, and integration.

Abstract: We performed a prospective study of all patients with bacteremic pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus over a period of 6 years during an outbreak of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Patients with bacteremic pneumonia due to MRSA (32 cases) or methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA; 54 cases) were compared. The patients with MRSA pneumonia were older and were more likely than those with MSSA pneumonia to have predisposing factors for acquisition of the infection. There were no differences in clinical findings, radiological pattern, or complications in clinical evolution among patients with MRSA and MSSA pneumonia. Mortality was significantly higher among MSSA-infected patients treated with vancomycin than among those treated with cloxacillin (47% vs. none; P<.01). Multivariate analysis (stepwise logistic regression method) showed a relationship between mortality and the following variables: septic shock (odds ratio [OR], 61), vancomycin treatment (OR, 14), and respiratory distress (OR, 8).

Abstract: In the last years, the development of ontology-based applications has increased considerably, mainly related to the semantic web. Users currently looking for ontologies in order to incorporate them into their systems, just use their experience and intuition. This makes it difficult for them to justify their choices. Mainly, this is due to the lack of methods that help the user to determine which are the most appropriate ontologies for the new system. To solve this deficiency, the present work proposes a method, ONTOMETRIC, which allows the users to measure the suitability of existing ontologies, regarding the requirements of their systems.

Abstract: Most of the literature related to the measurement of economic efficiency has based its analysis either on parametric or on non-parametric frontier methods. The choice of estimation method has been an issue of debate with some researchers preferring the parametric and others the non-parametric approach. The aim of this paper is to provide a critical and detailed review of both core frontier methods. In our opinion, no approach is strictly preferable to any other. Moreover, a careful consideration of their main advantages and disadvantages, of the data set utilized, and of the intrinsic characteristics of the framework under analysis will help us in the correct implementation of these techniques. Recent developments in frontier techniques and economic efficiency measurement such as Bayesian techniques, bootstrapping, duality theory and the analysis of sampling asymptotic properties are also considered in this paper.
