TL;DR: In a very crucial sense there is no methodology without logos, without thinking about thinking as mentioned in this paper, and if a firm distinction is drawn between methodology and technique, the latter is no substitute for the former.
Abstract: “To have mastered ‘theory’ and ‘method’ is to have become a conscious thinker, a man at work and aware of the assumptions and implications of whatever he is about. To be mastered by ‘method’ or ‘theory’ is simply to be kept from working.” The sentence applies nicely to the present plight of political science. The profession as a whole oscillates between two unsound extremes. At the one end a large majority of political scientists qualify as pure and simple unconscious thinkers. At the other end a sophisticated minority qualify as overconscious thinkers, in the sense that their standards of method and theory are drawn from the physical, “paradigmatic” sciences. The wide gap between the unconscious and the overconscious thinker is concealed by the growing sophistication of statistical and research techniques. Most of the literature introduced by the title “Methods” (in the social, behavioral or political sciences) actually deals with survey techniques and social statistics, and has little if anything to share with the crucial concern of “methodology,” which is a concern with the logical structure and procedure of scientific enquiry. In a very crucial sense there is no methodology without logos, without thinking about thinking. And if a firm distinction is drawn—as it should be—between methodology and technique, the latter is no substitute for the former. One may be a wonderful researcher and manipulator of data, and yet remain an unconscious thinker.

Abstract: A wide class of one-dimensional heat conduction problems with phase change is considered on the assumption that the latent heat is a given function of the position of the separation plane between the two phases: L=φ[s(t)]. Some sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the solution in a given time-interval are given. This work permits the generalization of some previous results and the investigation of some cases of particular interest.

Abstract: * Department of Medicine, Division of Clinical Pharmacology, University of Florence, Florence, Italy. Presented at The Tenth Annual Meeting of the International College of Angiology, Geneva, Switzerland, July 23 to 28, 1968. This research was financed partly by the National Research Council, Rome, Italy. The pathogenesis of some of the phenomena which follow apoplexy and subarachnoid hemorrhage, even today, has not been convincingly interpreted. It is logical that under these conditions one should not look for the mechanism of these phenomena only in large, asphyctic processes, either edematous or destructive, but also in the action of the biologic substances which may be activated and concentrated in nervous tissue and in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) after intracranial bleeding. Recent advances in biochemistry and pharmacology give evidence that vari-

TL;DR: A nonspecific proteolytic enzyme (pronase) has been successfully tested, showing the essential proteic nature of the nuclear paracrystals of Pteridophyta, and a correlation of paracrys with the aging of the plant is indicated.
Abstract: SUMMARY77 species of Pteridophyta were investigated at the electron microscope. In mesophyll cells of 59 species an impressive occurrence of intranuclear paracrystals was observed. Their sizes are approximately 1–3 μm varying according to the age of the plant. The paracrystals are usually polygonal-shaped but different forms are frequently encountered. At higher magnification a crystal lattice pattern can be resolved. Its substructure consists of a series of electron-opaque parallel subunits alternated with others whose electron opacity is less evident. The centre to centre spacing between two electron-opaque subunits is about 120 A.A nonspecific proteolytic enzyme (pronase) has been successfully tested, showing the essential proteic nature of the nuclear paracrystals. In general terms a correlation of paracrystals with the aging of the plant is indicated. No inverse size relationship, as reported by other authors, between nucleolus and these paracrystal-line formations was observed.Taxonomic perspectives ...

TL;DR: In 22 colonie di Belonogaster griseus (Fab.) della Somalia as mentioned in this paper, the authors determined the larghezza del vertice, the larghesia dello scuto, the lunghesia del peduncolo, and the number of hamuli.

TL;DR: In this paper, two samples of polypropylene containing grafted methyl acrylate branches have been studied at different temperatures and it was shown that the macromolecules lie rigidly at the surface with considerable cohesive energy between the monomeric segments.
Abstract: Monolayers of two samples of polypropylene containing grafted methyl acrylate branches have been studied at different temperatures. Spreading enthalpies and entropies were deduced by plotting values of surface pressure versus temperature at different values of the area. From the values of such thermodynamic properties we conclude that the macromolecules lie rigidly at the surface with considerable cohesive energy between the monomeric segments.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed a robust and comprehensive tool to evaluate the effect on household welfare of different agricultural policies in Tanzania and food price changes, using a two-stage estimation strategy: the shadow price of labour is first estimated and then used to estimate production and demand systems as well as labour market functions.
Abstract: Exogenous shocks to farmers' consumption, production and labour market decisions are rarely considered accurately. For farm households, under labour market imperfections, such decisions are often interlinked. This calls for non-separable agricultural household models. According to this framework, second-order (or behavioural) effects include a direct (i.e., supply or demand reactions due to an exogenous shock) and an indirect (i.e., supply or demand adjustments to the endogenous variations in the shadow wage generated by the exogenous shock) component. Under large price changes or following structural interventions, such as those concerning land redistribution or mechanisation practices, neglecting such second-order effects on consumption and production can bias the final impact on household welfare. The main objective of this study is thus to develop a robust and comprehensive tool to evaluate the effect on household welfare of different agricultural policies in Tanzania and food price changes. A two-stage estimation strategy is adopted: the shadow price of labour is first estimated and then used to estimate production and demand systems as well as labour market functions. These models are subsequently used to simulate the effect on household welfare of a hypothetical 40% increase in the price of cereals and other crops and a hypothetical 10% increase in the hectares of arable land and in the use of ox-ploughs. The results are finally compared with the case in which a separable model is adopted.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that magnetic fields in ordinary stars are usually attributed to non-equilibrium processes such as the existence of currents in the form of drifting charges, but they have recently shown that a new kind of quasi -equilibrium state exists, which possesses a uniform self-consistent magnetization.
Abstract: RECENTLY there has been interest in the problem of intense magnetic fields (IMF) in gravitationally collapsed bodies1–6. In particular, the radio emission from neutron stars (pulsars) suggests strong magnetic fields of the order of 1012 G (refs. 5 and 7). According to the law of flux conservation, in a collapse process the magnetic fields strength increases as the square of the contracting factor a (> 1). If the initial magnetic field is of the order of 103 G (the field in sunspots) before collapse, then assuming contraction from a star of one solar radius ∼1011 cm to that of a neutron star of 106 cm, a field strength of 1013 G may be achieved. Magnetic fields in ordinary stars are usually attributed to non-equilibrium processes such as the existence of currents in the form of drifting charges, but we have recently shown that a new kind of quasi -equilibrium state exists, which possesses a uniform self-consistent magnetization8.
