Abstract: Eradication aims at eliminating populations of alien organisms from an area. Since not all eradications are successful, several factors have been proposed in the literature (mainly by referring to case studies) to be crucial for eradication success, such as infestation size or reaction time. To our knowledge, however, no study has statistically evaluated which factors affect eradication success and attempted to determine their relative importance. We established a unique global dataset on 136 eradication campaigns against 75 species (invasive alien invertebrates, plants and plant pathogens) and statistically tested whether the following factors, proposed by others were significantly related to eradication success: (1) the reaction time between the arrival/detection of the organism and the start of the eradication campaign; (2) the spatial extent of the infestation; (3) the level of biological knowledge of the organism; and (4) insularity. Of these, only the spatial extent of the infestation was significantly related to the eradication outcome: local campaigns were more successful than regional or national campaigns. Reaction time, the level of knowledge and insularity were all unrelated to eradication success. Hence, some factors suggested as being crucial may be less important than previously thought, at least for the organisms tested here. We found no differences in success rates among taxonomic groups or geographic regions. We recommend that eradication measures should generally concentrate on the very early phase of invasions when infestations are still relatively small.

Abstract: In mammals, the loss of a limb is irreversible. By contrast, urodele amphibians and teleost fish are capable of nearly perfect regeneration of lost appendages. This ability depends on direct interaction between the wound epithelium and mesenchymal progenitor cells of the blastema. It has been known for decades that contact between the wound epithelium and the underlying blastema is essential for successful regeneration. However, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we show that upon amputation the blastema induces expression of the ligand Igf2b, which then activates IGF signaling specifically in cells of the adjacent apical epithelium. Inhibition of IGF signaling by either morpholino antisense technology, or by specific chemical inhibitors of Igf1 receptor function NVP-AEW541 and NVP-ADW742, impairs fin regeneration. At the cellular level, this block in regeneration is reflected by a lack of the distinctive basal epithelium, increased apoptosis in the wound epidermis and reduced proliferation of blastema cells. Furthermore, induction of the blastemal and wound epidermal markers cannot be supported in the absence of IGF signaling. These data provide evidence that Igf2b expressed in the blastema promotes the properties of the adjacent wound epidermis, which subsequently are necessary for blastema function. Thus, IGF signaling upregulated upon fin amputation represents a signal from the blastema to the wound epithelium, a crucial step in appendage regeneration.

Abstract: In order to address the challenges associated with lithium–sulfur batteries with high energy densities, various approaches, including advanced designs of sulfur composites, electrolyte engineering, and functional separators, are lately introduced. However, most approaches are effective for sulfur cathodes with limited sulfur contents, i.e., <80 wt%, imposing a significant barrier in realizing high energy densities in practical cell settings. Here, elemental sulfur-mediated synthesis of a perfluorinated covalent triazine framework (CTF) and its simultaneous chemical impregnation with elemental sulfur via SNAr chemistry are demonstrated. SNAr chemistry facilitates the dehalogenation and nucleophilic addition reactions of perfluoroaryl units with nucleophilic sulfur chains, achieving a high sulfur content of 86 wt% in the resulting CTF. The given sulfur-impregnated CTF, named SF-CTF, exhibits a specific capacity of 1138.2 mAh g−1 at 0.05C, initial Coulombic efficiency of 93.1%, and capacity retention of 81.6% after 300 cycles, by utilizing homogeneously distributed sulfur within the micropores and nitrogen atoms of triazine units offering high binding affinity toward lithium polysulfides.
