Abstract: The neurologic basis of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is poorly understood. Based on previous studies that have implicated metabolic deficiencies in the caudate-striatal region in ADHD, we employed magnetic resonance imaging to investigate patterns of morphology of the head of the caudate nucleus in normal and ADHD children. In normal children, 72.7% evidenced a left-larger-than-right (L > R) pattern of asymmetry, whereas 63.6% of the ADHD children had the reverse (L R) morphologic asymmetry in the region of the caudate nucleus may be related to asymmetries observed in neurotransmitter systems implicated in ADHD. The behavioral symptoms of ADHD may reflect disinhibition from normal levels of dominant hemispheric control, possibly correlated with deviations in asymmetric caudate-striatal morphology and deficiencies in associated neurotransmitter systems.

Abstract: DISSOLVED organic material in marine and freshwater ecosystems constitutes one of the Earth's largest actively cycled reservoirs for organic matter1. The bacterially mediated turnover of chemically identifiable, low-molecular-mass components of this pool has been studied in detail for nearly three decades, but these compounds constitute less than 20% of the total reservoir2. In contrast, little is known about the fate of the larger, biologically more refractory molecules—including humic substances—which make up the bulk of dissolved organic matter. Here we report results from bacterial bioassays and photochemical studies indicating that exposure to sunlight causes dissolved organic matter to release nitrogen-rich compounds that are biologically available, thus enhancing the bacterial degradation of humic substances. We demonstrate that ammonium is among the nitrogenous compounds released and is produced most efficiently by ultraviolet wavelengths. Photochemical release of ammonium from dissolved organic matter has important implications for nitrogen availability in many aquatic ecosystems, including nitrogen-limited high-latitude environments and coastal oceans, where inputs of terrestrial humic substances are high.

Abstract: The Southeastern Fishes Council Technical Advisory Committee reviewed the diversity, distribution, and status of all native freshwater and diadromous fishes across 51 major drainage units of the southern United States. The southern United States supports more native fishes than any area of comparable size on the North American continent north of Mexico, but also has a high proportion of its fishes in need of conservation action. The review included 662 native freshwater and diadromous fishes and 24 marine fishes that are significant components of freshwater ecosystems. Of this total, 560 described, freshwater fish species are documented, and 49 undescribed species are included provisionally pending formal description. Described subspecies (86) are recognized within 43 species, 6 fishes have undescribed subspecies, and 9 others are recognized as complexes of undescribed taxa. Abstract: The components of nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) tensors for Dnhn-annulenes are discussed as indexes of the aromatic character of electronic π systems. The component corresponding to the principal axis perpendicular to the ring plane, NICSzz, is found to be a good measure for the characterisation of the π system of the ring. Isotropic NICS values at ring centres contain large influences from the σ system and from all three principal components of the NICS tensor. At large distances away from the ring center, NICSzz, which is dominated by contributions from the π system, characterizes NICS well.
