Abstract: The WTO protests in Seattle witnessed the emergence of an international citizens' movement for democratic globalization. With the tactical exploitation of television, the internet, and other technologies, Seattle also witnessed the enactment of forms of activism adapted to a wired society. In the wake of Seattle, this essay introduces the “public screen” as a necessary supplement to the metaphor of the public sphere for understanding today's political scene. While a public sphere orientation inevitably finds contemporary discourse wanting, viewing such discourse through the prism of the public screen provokes a consideration of new forms of participatory democracy. In comparison to the public sphere's privileging of rationality, embodied conversations, consensus, and civility, the public screen highlights dissemination, images, hypermediacy, publicity, distraction, and dissent. Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate endophyte-free (EF) and endophyte-infected (EI) tall fescue plants from one clone for morphological and physiological responses to flooding, N rates (11, 73, and 220 mg N pot −1 ), and −0.03, −0.05 and −0.50 MPa drought stress in the greenhouse. Plants were grown in a synthetic mixture of the following by volume: Cecil sandy clay loam (clayey, kaolinitic, thermic Typic Hapludult) (33%), sand (16%), peat moss (17%), perlite (17%), and vermiculite (17%). Abstract: People process uncertainty information in two qualitatively different systems. Most climate forecast communications assume people process information analytically. Yet people also rely heavily on an experiential processing system. Better understanding of experiential processing may lead to more comprehensible risk communication products. Retranslation of statistical information into concrete (vicarious) experience facilitates intuitive understanding of probabilistic information and motivates contingency planning. Sharing vicarious experience in group discussions or simulations of forecasts, decisions, and outcomes provides a richer and more representative sample of relevant experience. The emotional impact of the concretization of abstract risks motivates action in ways not provided by an analytic understanding.
