TL;DR: In this article, new and efficient derivations of the general existence and uniqueness theorems are given, plus a constructive procedure for obtaining the desired approximations, and several practical examples illustrate the methods.
Abstract: : The spline interpolation problem was generalized by Atteia to an abstract minimization problem in a Hilbert space setting. In this paper, new and efficient derivations of the general existence and uniqueness theorems are given, plus a constructive procedure for obtaining the desired approximations. Several practical examples illustrate the methods. (Author)

TL;DR: In this article, the properties of a dispersing cloud of passive contaminant released from an instantaneous source near the ground in a neutral atmosphere are investigated theoretically, and expressions for the position of the centre of mass of the cloud and for its downwind and vertical spreads as functions of the time after release are derived.
Abstract: Properties of a dispersing cloud of passive contaminant released from an instantaneous source near the ground in a neutral atmosphere are investigated theoretically. The mean wind satisfies the logarithmic law, and it is assumed that the vertical turbulent transfer can be described by means of an eddy diffusivity. By using some of the results of the Lagrangian similarity theory of Batchelor, it is shown how useful results may then be obtained from the equation describing the distribution of concentration. In particular, expressions are derived for the position of the centre of mass of the cloud and for its downwind and vertical spreads as functions of the time after release. The distribution of material at a given height is also investigated. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the results and of other applications of the type of technique presented here.

TL;DR: In this article, the theoretical determination of the settlement of a linearly loaded rectangular area at the surface of a semi-infinite mass of elastic, isotropic, homogeneous soil is presented.
Abstract: The theoretical determination of the settlement of a linearly-loaded rectangular area at the surface of a semi-infinite mass of elastic, isotropic, homogeneous soil is presented. This linear stress distribution is commonly assumed in the design of foundations subject to an eccentric and inclined load in the case of dams, buildings, and retaining walls. The settlement coefficients have been calculated for several points of the loaded area by integration of the Boussinesq and Cerruti formulas for the settlement due to a single load, either normal or tangential. The numerical values of these coefficients have been listed in tables and plotted in charts as a function of the ratio of the sides of the rectangle. Practical examples are given. The main features of the theoretical analysis are given without going into the details of the calculations.

TL;DR: In this article, the relationship between limit analysis and yield line analysis is investigated for simply-supported, isotropic slabs subjected to single point loadings, and it is found that conventional yield-line analyses quite often give substantial over-estimates of the carrying capacity.
Abstract: : The relationship between limit analysis and yield-line analysis is investigated. Attention is restricted to simply-supported, isotropic slabs subjected to single point loadings. It is found that conventional yield-line analyses quite often give substantial over-estimates of the carrying capacity. A general method is formulated for finding the yield-point load, and various examples are considered. (Author)
