TL;DR: In this article, an overview is given on recent achievements in the photophysical investigations of single nanoparticles and the application of EXAFS spectroscopy to the study of structural properties of semiconductor nanoparticles.
Abstract: Nanoparticle research is still a rapidly growing field of science. Semiconductor nanocrystals of a large variety of compositions have been prepared in exceedingly good quality. State-of-the-art preparations and standard characterization methods are discussed. The build-up of more complex nanoheterostructures is reported, and their structural and electronic properties are outlined. An overview is given on recent achievements in the photophysical investigations of single nanoparticles and the application of EXAFS spectroscopy to the study of structural properties of semiconductor nanoparticles.

TL;DR: The Decoding Toolbox (TDT) is introduced which represents a user-friendly, powerful and flexible package for multivariate analysis of functional brain imaging data and offers a promising option for researchers who want to employ multivariate analyses of brain activity patterns.
Abstract: The multivariate analysis of brain signals has recently sparked a great amount of interest, yet accessible and versatile tools to carry out decoding analyses are scarce. Here we introduce The Decoding Toolbox (TDT) which represents a user-friendly, powerful and flexible package for multivariate analysis of functional brain imaging data. TDT is written in Matlab and equipped with an interface to the widely used brain data analysis package SPM. The toolbox allows running fast whole-brain analyses, region-of-interest analyses and searchlight analyses, using machine learning classifiers, pattern correlation analysis, or representational similarity analysis. It offers automatic creation and visualization of diverse cross-validation schemes, feature scaling, nested parameter selection, a variety of feature selection methods, multiclass capabilities, and pattern reconstruction from classifier weights. While basic users can implement a generic analysis in one line of code, advanced users can extend the toolbox to their needs or exploit the structure to combine it with external high-performance classification toolboxes. The toolbox comes with an example data set which can be used to try out the various analysis methods. Taken together, TDT offers a promising option for researchers who want to employ multivariate analyses of brain activity patterns.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the end points of open strings are rather bound to stay on integer conjugacy classes, whereas the branes fill out the whole group volume.
Abstract: It is stated in the literature that $D$-branes in the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model associated with the gluing condition $J=\ensuremath{-}\overline{J}$ along the boundary correspond to branes filling out the whole group volume. We show instead that the end points of open strings are rather bound to stay on ``integer'' conjugacy classes. In the case of the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ level $k$ WZW model we obtain $k\ensuremath{-}1$ two-dimensional Euclidean $D$-branes and two $D$ particles sitting at the points $e$ and $\ensuremath{-}e.$

TL;DR: DoGSiteScorer is a newly developed automatic tool combining pocket prediction, characterization and druggability estimation and is now available through a web server.
Abstract: MOTIVATION Many drug discovery projects fail because the underlying target is finally found to be undruggable. Progress in structure elucidation of proteins now opens up a route to automatic structure-based target assessment. DoGSiteScorer is a newly developed automatic tool combining pocket prediction, characterization and druggability estimation and is now available through a web server. AVAILABILITY The DoGSiteScorer web server is freely available for academic use at http://dogsite.zbh.uni-hamburg.de CONTACT rarey@zbh.uni-hamburg.de.

TL;DR: Analysis of paraffin‐embedded specimens of DCIS and six associated invasive carcinomas revealed a genetic pattern almost identical to the one seen in the DCIS counterpart, characterize DCIS as a genetically far‐advanced, heterogeneous lesion and as a direct precursor of invasive breast cancer.
Abstract: There is strong evidence that ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) represents a precursor lesion of invasive breast cancer. In order to analyse specific chromosomal alterations of DCIS, 38 paraffin-embedded specimens of DCIS and six associated invasive carcinomas were examined by means of comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). Losses of 16q material were seen almost exclusively in well- and intermediately-differentiated DCIS. These two subgroups differed in the average number of genetic imbalances, 2·5 and 5·5 respectively. Additionally, a higher frequency of gains of 1q and losses of 11q material was seen in intermediately-differentiated in contrast to well-differentiated DCIS. Poorly-differentiated DCIS displayed a higher frequency of amplifications (17q12, 11q13) and a higher average rate of genetic imbalances (7·1). Analysis of adjacent invasive breast carcinoma revealed a genetic pattern almost identical to the one seen in the DCIS counterpart. These data characterize DCIS as a genetically far-advanced, heterogeneous lesion and as a direct precursor of invasive breast cancer. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
