TL;DR: A solid bowl decanter centrifuge of the scroll discharge type comprises a solid bowl which rotates at a first speed and a scroll conveyor which is rotated within the bowl at a second, slightly different speed for conveying separated solids to a solids discharge end of the bowl as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A solid bowl decanter centrifuge of the scroll discharge type comprises a solid bowl which rotates at a first speed, and a scroll conveyor which is rotated within the bowl at a second, slightly different speed for conveying separated solids to a solids discharge end of the bowl. The suspension to be centrifuges, substantially unmixed with a flocculant, is introduced by a stationary feed pipe into a feed compartment which is a radial passage in the conveyor. The feed compartment provides high turbulence and shear forces which mix and expel the suspension and flocculant into the bowl before flocs have formed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the variability in solute concentrations of soil and stream water during throughflow events at Bicknoller Combe, Somerset, England, and suggested that two distinct erosional environments may exist: on the spurs, leaching seems to be related solely to infiltration processes and in the hollows, saturated throughflow also contributes to the solute removal.
Abstract: Variation in solute concentrations of soil and stream water during throughflow events was studied at Bicknoller Combe, Somerset, England. The main hydrological process acting in the catchment involves a delayed throughflow discharge pulse a day or two after the rainfall event. During the period of storm runoff, coincident with the rainfall, the solutes in the stream are diluted, but their concentration in the throughflow remains unchanged. During the delayed throughflow pulse, concentrations of both soil and stream water increase. This is due to additional leaching from the soil in hollows where saturated moisture conditions prevail. The results suggest that two distinct erosional environments may exist: on the spurs, leaching seems to be related solely to infiltration processes, whilst in the hollows, saturated throughflow also contributes to the solute removal. This contrast in erosional processes may perhaps account for the difference in slope form and development between the hollow and spur zones.

TL;DR: In this article, an opening roller for open-end spinning is described, which comprises a body on which is wound a helical coil of metallic wire type card-clothing.
Abstract: The invention relates to opening rollers for open-end spinning apparatus, particularly roller which comprise a body on which is wound a helical coil of metallic wire type card-clothing. The roller body comprises two body parts secured together in end-to-end relationship, and the metallic wire type card-clothing is formed into a pre-set helical coil which is located on an external cylindrical surface of the body, the end flanks of the coil engaging respectively with two abutments one on each of the two parts of the roller body, so that the coil is constrained axially between the abutments in a manner such that adjacent convolutions of the coil are held in abutting relationship. It is preferred to use interlocking card-clothing wire. It is also preferred to make the roller body parts in plastics material, and to secure them together by an adhesive, and in this manner a disposable roller is produced. The specification describes methods of refurbishing existing opening rollers, in accordance with the invention.

TL;DR: In this paper, various reasons for current efficiency losses in indirect electrochemical processing are considered using the Cr(VI) oxidation ofo-toluene sulphonamide as a model, and it is shown that accretion of organic residues is an important factor contributing to current efficiency loss.
Abstract: The various reasons for current efficiency losses in indirect electrochemical processing are considered. Using the Cr(VI) oxidation ofo-toluene sulphonamide as a model, it is shown that accretion of organic residues is an important factor contributing to current efficiency losses. Other evidence is provided to suggest that film formation on the electrode surface acts selectively to promote oxygen evolution rather than Cr(III) re-oxidation.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated patterns of attendance and dropout for 395 adult education classes at four centres attached to a college of further education in Yorkshire for the period 1975-77 and found little overall difference between the patterns for the two years, although the centres had significant differences in their respective dropout rates.
Abstract: Summary Patterns of attendance and dropout for 395 adult education classes at four centres attached to a college of further education in Yorkshire were investigated for the period 1975‐77. The classes were mainly ‘non‐vocational’ but included a significant number of ‘academic’ classes, i.e. O‐ and A‐level, and RSA classes. The majority lasted two terms, but classes of one term and short six‐week courses were also included. Statistical analysis of the data using an on‐line computer showed several interesting features. Firstly, there was little overall difference between the patterns for the two years, although the centres had significant differences in their respective dropout rates. Secondly, the type of class significantly affected the dropout rate, academic classes having a much higher rate than the other subject groupings. Thirdly, the day of the week significantly affected the dropout rate, with Monday having the highest, particularly for academic classes. Fourthly, the dropout rate for mixed classes ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the types of clinical problems which are presented by self-referred "neurotic" patients, primarily in the out-patient population, and present a set of procedures which do not owe their origin to behaviour therapy.
Abstract: A major stimulus to our paper has been our recent observation of Dr. Vic Meyer at a behavioural workshop. We are concerned therefore with the types of clinical problems which are presented by self-referred “neurotic”, primarily out-patient population. Dr. Meyer particularly excites our interest, since he is a clinician in the instigative mould which we favour. Furthermore he seems to have overcome, for himself at least, the problems we wish to discuss. We are uncomfortable with his claim, however, that he has done so by a rigid adherence to the sort of S-R behaviourist psychology that we can find in textbooks such as Kimble (1967) and other basic learning texts. We feel it to be important to spell out those areas where the term “behavioural” is ascribed to procedures which do not owe their origin to behaviour therapy and is used in some way to authorise and to furnish a rather empty post hoc description of them.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a tuned viscous torsional vibration damper having a hub member for attachment to an internal combustion engine crankshaft, where an annular inertia mass is journaled within the hub member to form a working chamber which contains a viscous liquid to damp out torsial oscillations of the inertia member relative to the hub.
Abstract: The disclosure illustrates a tuned viscous torsional vibration damper having a hub member for attachment to an internal combustion engine crankshaft. An annular inertia mass is journaled within the hub member to form a working chamber which contains a viscous liquid to damp out torsional oscillations of the inertia member relative to the hub. The hub has a series of inwardly directed vanes that are received in a corresponding number of slots in the internal member to define pairs of variable chambers filled with viscous liquid. Inwardly directed blind bores in each variable chamber form gas springs which interconnect the hub and inertia member to provide tuning.

Abstract: A campus network has been built at the University of Salford in which a number of minicomputers have been linked to a PRIME 300/400 system using the protocol adopted for ICL 2900 series communications. This protocol is known as Extended Basic Mode, or XBM. The network is integrated into a wider regional network of ICL machines through a link to the local ICL 1904S service. The protocol defines a standard terminal model which is used as a machine-independent basis for the network construction. The benefits are described which the network brings to users both of the various minicomputers and of the PRIME system.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess the industrial relations implications of safety representation in the context of the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and the TUC's regulations on safety representation.
Abstract: The ‘Health and Safety at Work Act (1974)’ has always seemed to have important industrial relations implications. The Act was greatly influenced by the Robins Report which had stressed the need for greater voluntary regulation at the operational level. Substantively, the Act followed the Robins philosophy in the provision of the very important general duties of employers in section two. These duties, whilst comprehensive, were necessarily expressed in terms of relative standards, which need interpretation in particular workplaces. Although it was intended that codes of practice would be provided to facilitate this, the Act also followed Robins procedurally in providing for the appointment of employee safety representatives to participate in such interpretations. An amendment to the Act at the behest of the TUC provided that the legal rights and privileges of safety representatives be confined to those appointed by recognised independent trade unions. The passage of the regulations on safety representation are therefore a further stage in the formal development of trade union involvement in the control of health and safety at work. The purpose of this article is to assess the industrial relations implications of such safety representation.
