TL;DR: In this article, the contribution of throughflow to storm runoff was examined using a chemical mixing model and the results predict that throughflow is an important component of storm runoff particularly during the period of stream recession.
Abstract: The contribution of throughflow to storm runoff is examined using a chemical mixing model. The results predict that throughflow is an important component of storm runoff particularly during the period of stream recession. Supporting hydrological data suggests that a major throughflow input occurs coincident with the stream discharge peak. The two sets of results therefore conflict in the predicted timing of the throughflow response.

TL;DR: In this paper, Lloyd P. E. and Reeve D. E., studied industrial decline and economic re-structuring in the North West and found that the region's two cities have taken the brunt of de-industrialization, while there is some evidence of a weak decentralizing trend favouring the exurban free-standing towns and previously non-industrial centres.
Abstract: Lloyd P. E. and Reeve D. E. (1982) North West England 1971–7: a study in industrial decline and economic re-structuring, Reg. Studies 16, 345–59. The North West, as one of Britain's traditional industrial regions has seen a sharp acceleration in the pace of its industrial decline during the seventies. In concert with regions of the periphery and joined by formerly prosperous regions like the Midlands and South East, it has been overtaken by emerging de-industrialization. Differential sub-regional performance in terms of employment has been less a function of manufacturing success or failure (failure has been virtually universal) and more a product of differential service growth. While the region's two cities have taken the brunt of de-industrialization, there is some evidence of a weak decentralizing trend favouring the ex-urban free-standing towns and previously non-industrial centres. This is consistent with revealed trends for the nation as a whole. Underpinning such structural and spatial shifts is th...

TL;DR: In this paper, a thin wall annular flange is used to move a turbocharger in an annular inlet passage between thin wall 52 and wall 46 of turbine housing.
Abstract: A turbocharger for a diesel engine 34, wherein combustion air is supplied under pressure to the engine's intake manifold 32 from a centrifugal compressor 20 rotated by a turbine wheel 18 driven by exhaust gas from the engine supplied to inlet volute 44. Exhaust gas from the volute impinges on the turbine wheel after passing between stationary vanes 60 in an annular inlet passage between thin wall 52 and wall 46 of turbine housing 40. In this passage is a thin wall annular flange 64 slotted to fit over the vanes. The flange is part of a thin wall ring 62 stamped from stainless steel movable across the passage to control the inlet area thereof. The ring 62 is movable by actuators 80 (only one shown) having rods 74 connected to the ring. Springs 116 act on the rods 74 to urge the flange 64 towards the wall 46 thus reducing the area of the inlet passage so exhaust gas rushes through the reduced inlet and speeds the turbine and compressor providing at manifold 32 an increased air pressure. This increased pressure is used to urge diaphragm 100 in the actuators 80 in opposition to the springs and thus move ring 62 to increase the inlet passage area. The thinness of the ring 62 minimizes the chance that exhaust products will make it stick to vanes 46 and enables the ring to move quickly in response to actuators 80. Also the ring is cheap to make.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors reviewed the conclusions of Ovenden and Gregory (1980) in the context of a stream network on the blanket peat moorland of the Southern Pennines.
Abstract: The conclusions of Ovenden and Gregory (1980) are reviewed in the context of a stream network on the blanket peat moorland of the Southern Pennines. The very great disparity between the 1:10560 map network and the present channel system suggests that the original survey only included the major tributaries. Map accuracy in areas of peat moorland must therefore be treated with some caution particularly if no air photograph or field checking can be done. Some problems of network definition in the peat moorlands are also briefly discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, a tractor bonnet is pivably connected near its front end to longer arms of respective laterally-spaced interconnected bell-crank levers which are pivotably mounted about a common transverse axis on an upstanding sub-frame secured to the tractor's main frame.
Abstract: To enable a tractor bonnet to be opened and closed it is pivotably connected near its front end to longer arms of respective laterally-spaced interconnected bell-crank levers which are pivotably mounted about a common transverse axis on an upstanding sub-frame secured to the tractor's main frame. When the bonnet has been initially moved forwardly, thus pivoting the levers relative to both the bonnet and the sub-frame, the shorter arms of the levers abut against the sub-frame whereafter the rear end of the bonnet is secondarily moved upwardly and forwardly into opened position by pivoting the bonnet relative to the stationary levers. The bonnet is closed by performing the same movements in reverse sequence, a transverse arch preferably being so fixed relative to the main frame as to guide the bonnet near the end of its initial closing movement.

TL;DR: In this article, a systematic study of secondary source information before entering a foreign market can greatly enhance an executive's feel for the environment in which his product may (or may not) be selling.
Abstract: British firms are fortunate in having access to a plethora of information regarding markets and marketing activities in overseas countries. And yet, there are always nagging doubts as to the extent to which such sources of information are effectively used. Perhaps, the choice is too wide. The myriad of directories, research reports, sources of sources and books on overseas markets is just too time consuming to study in detail. There is little doubt, however, that a systematic study of secondary source information before entering a foreign market can greatly enhance an executive's feel for the environment in which his product may (or may not) be selling. This article attempts to help those managers wishing to conduct international market research in the art of finding and using published sources of information.

TL;DR: In this paper, the base pushout in the phosphorus-emitter boron-base transistor structure has been investigated and characterised in terms of χ, the base-diffusivity enhancement factor.
Abstract: Base push-out in the phosphorus-emitter boron-base transistor structure has been investigated and characterised in terms of χ, the base-diffusivity enhancement factor. The dependence of χ on emitter diffusion temperature and electrically active surface concentration, in the ranges 900–1150°C and 1019–3.1020 cm−3 respectively, has been determined. The results have been compared with previously published results and with the predictions of the Fair and Tsai E-centre model[1,2].

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the factors that led to the choice of air-splicing as an alternative to latex-jointing to give improved tuftability and a better end-product.
Abstract: For some twenty years, latex-jointing has been the accepted method of jointing woollen-spun yarns for the tufted-carpet industry. However, in the last few years, developments in the carpet industry and also an increasing awareness by carpet manufacturers of the limitations of latex have drawn attention to the need for improved methods of jointing. Factors are discussed in this paper that led to the choice of air-splicing as an alternative to latex-jointing to give improved tuftability and a better end-product. The paper also outlines a co-operative development project between yarn spinner and splicer manufacturer, leading to the successful splicing of many different types of woollen-spun yarn. Results achieved in current practice are assessed. Air-spliced joints are seen to eliminate most of the appearance faults associated with latex joints. Their minimum strengths are generally higher than the minimum strengths found in latex joints and, now that air-splicing is in commercial use on woollen-spun yarns, ...

TL;DR: The work about to discuss shows that decision aids, utilising the clinician’s knowledge and expertise, can improve on unaided judgement and choice.
Abstract: The mathematical techniques to-be presented are intended as aids to the clinician’s decision making.1 The methods to be introduced do not imply that a mathematical model or theory implemented by computer can replace the clinician. The work we are about to discuss shows that decision aids, utilising the clinician’s knowledge and expertise, can improve on unaided judgement and choice. Diagnosis, prognosis and treatment decisions made under conditions of uncertainty and including the clinician’s differential valuation of the consequences of the decisions, can be improved. This extra precision is due to the optimal combination of the information the clinician already possesses rather than the clinician’s access to extra information.
