TL;DR: In this paper, a critical analysis of the Beckford report and its implications for social work and personal social services is provided, where four interrelated themes are explored: the relationship between social work practice, statutory responsibilities and the law; the attitudes of social workers towards children and families; the social work skills required; and the assumptions that are made about child abuse and the role of social worker.
Abstract: This paper provides a critical analysis of the Beckford Report and its implications for social work and the personal social services. Four interrelated themes are explored: the relationship between social work practice, statutory responsibilities and the law; the attitudes of social workers towards children and families; the social work skills required; and the assumptions that are made about child abuse and the role of social workers. This is then related to recent research findings in the area of policies and decision making in child care. It concludes by arguing that the report is in great danger of misdirecting our attentions from the major issues concerned with social work with children at risk.

TL;DR: In this paper, the design and use of a simple computer model which simulates aspects of hillslope hydrology is described in a teaching context, showing how a relatively complex environmental system can be constructed on the basis of simple but realistic theory, thus allowing the student to simulate the hydrological response of real hillslopes.
Abstract: The design and use of a simple computer model which simulates aspects of hillslope hydrology is described in a teaching context. The model shows how a relatively complex environmental system can be constructed on the basis of simple but realistic theory, thus allowing the student to simulate the hydrological response of real hillslopes. Initial runs allow the student to explore how the system operates; at this stage the model can serve as an important adjunct to lectures and field studies. At a more advanced level, the model can be used as a means of extending investigations well beyond the possibilities of controlled field experimentation; a large number of simulations can be run in a short time and the results used to define the role of particular variables.

TL;DR: Discussion of curriculum models in which 'product' and 'process' models are set out and discussed, the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches to the curriculum are outlined and issues relating to the choice of model are advanced.
Abstract: At the beginning of this article there is a brief outline of the nature of the curriculum and models. This leads into a discussion of curriculum models in which ‘product’ and ‘process’ models are set out and discussed. The strengths and weaknesses of both approaches to the curriculum are outlined and issues relating to the choice of model are advanced.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical model of a dual-tube damper is presented and the results of a digital simulation and comparison with previous experimental results are made. And a prediction of the ride performance of a vehicle fitted with these dampers is made and shows that the typical linear and bilinear models of the damper are inappropriate and lead to over-optimistic estimates of ride performance.
Abstract: This paper outlines a theoretical model of a dual-tube damper, presents the results of a digital simulation and compares them with previous experimental results. The damper characteristics are confirmed as being highly non-linear and exhibiting hysteresis effects. A prediction of the ride performance of a vehicle fitted with these dampers is made and shows that the typical linear and bilinear models of the damper are inappropriate and lead to over-optimistic estimates of ride performance.

TL;DR: An examination of the abilities required by nurses in order to deliver care in this way shows that to encompass the philosophy of the nursing process, fundamental changes need to be made in the way nurses are prepared in schools of nursing.
Abstract: The focus of this paper is an exploration of the implications for curriculum planning of adopting the nursing process; which, it is suggested, represents the most far-reaching innovation in British nursing of recent years. An examination of the abilities required by nurses in order for them to deliver care in this way shows that to encompass the philosophy of the nursing process, fundamental changes need to be made in the way nurses are prepared in schools of nursing. In particular, to those elements of the curriculum dealing with content and teaching methods.

TL;DR: A clear pattern of relationships since the 1960's between the generally perceived economic needs of the nation at any one time and certain widespread educational developments in both curriculum and methodology within secondary and further education can be found in this article.
Abstract: It appears possible to discern a clear pattern of relationships since the 1960's between the generally perceived economic needs of the nation at any one time and certain widespread educational developments in both curriculum and methodology within secondary and further education. In broad terms, a concern to place greater educational emphasis upon scientific studies was followed by a greater emphasis upon technology, and this in turn upon the commercial knowledge and skills necessary to achieve maximum benefit from technology and productive resources. As part of the latter trend, three educational concepts have in recent years achieved wide currency and have been espoused by various groups of educational bodies, institutions and interests. These concepts are Education for Capability, Education for Enterprise, and Entrepreneurship Education. In Part I of this paper some major educational manifestations of these concepts, particularly in the form of curricular development, are outlined. Since consi...

TL;DR: The results indicate that during sunny weather this species is heliothermic elevating its body temperature to around 30°c, which is lower than those recorded from animals in laboratory heat gradients (Cherchi, 1961; Hailey, 1984).
Abstract: Observations have been made during both cloudy and sunny weather on the body temperatures of the glass lizard Ophisaurus apodus in Yugoslavia. The results indicate that during sunny weather this species is heliothermic elevating its body temperature to around 30°c. When the weather was cloudy glass lizards were observed abroad on grass covered clearings but body temperatures were significantly lower during cloudy weather than those recorded under sunny weather. There was no significant difference between body temperatures measured during sunny weather in May and sunny weather in September and October. The body temperatures of males, females and juveniles were not significantly different during sunny or cloudy weather. For most of the daily period there was little difference between body temperatures except between 1700-1900 hrs when they were significantly lower. In general, the body temperatures of field measured 0. opodus were lower than those recorded from animals in laboratory heat gradients (Cherchi, 1961; Hailey, 1984).

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the implications of recruitment and promotion patterns and management development for building society managers in the context of greater competition and forthcoming legislation, which will bring about major changes in the traditional role of building societies managers.
Abstract: Greater competition and forthcoming legislation will bring about major changes in the traditional role of building society managers. This will undoubtedly have implications for recruitment and promotion patterns and will also require societies to devote a major effort to management development. Indeed, most of the larger societies have already begun to implement changes in these areas.

Abstract: In order to predict the future we must examine the past in order to observe trends over periods of time and establish the degree of probability with which these trends are likely to repeat themselves in the future. All forecasts are wrong, and management must be aware of this fact and decide upon the degree of inexactitude that can be tolerated when planning for the future.

TL;DR: Results of simulation studies suggest guidelines to aid in successful application of the extended Kalman filter identification technique as a means of identification of linear systems with Gaussian random inputs.
Abstract: This paper describes the principles of application of the extended Kalman filter identification technique as a means of identification of linear systems with Gaussian random inputs. Major consideration is given to an algorithmic implementation rather than to theoretical background in an attempt to make the technique more widely available to the engineer. Results of simulation studies suggest guidelines to aid in successful application of the technique to experimental situations.

TL;DR: In this paper, the nature of autonomy and the relevance of education to its development is explored through a discussion of three theories of the curriculum: progressive, liberal rational and social class.
Abstract: The nature of autonomy, and the relevance of education to its development is explored through a discussion of three theories—progressive, liberal-rational and social class — of the curriculum The discussion proceeds by a critical appraisal of a recent paper in which the theories are expressed Reasons are advanced for a preference for a ‘collaborative’ over a ‘negotiated’ curriculum The paper ends with a summary of arguments defending the liberal/rational curriculum against the progressive and social class analyses

TL;DR: At the 1985 meeting in Seoul of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, African delegates insisted that "the economic situation is the worst in recent history" as discussed by the authors, and this has exacerbated the televised disasters of drought and famine.
Abstract: At the October 1985 meeting in Seoul of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, African delegates insisted that ‘the economic situation is the worst in recent history’.Indeed, it is now widely accepted that the states and peoples of sub-Saharan Africa are in the midst of a crisis of unprecedented magnitude that has been caused by both short-term and long-range factors. Domestic food production has been declining, whilst food imports have increased, and this has exacerbated the televised disasters of drought and famine. The recession in western countries has led to a decline in the external demand for African primary products. Export volumes and values have decreased overall, producing significant fiscal problems, and the resulting foreign-exchange shortages have meant industrial stoppages, an inability to replace infrastructures, and a decline in the gross domestic product.
