TL;DR: The early cessation of contractile activity in ischemic myocardial cells appears to be the result of a reduction in the rate of regeneration of a small pool of extra-mitochondrial ATP available for muscle contraction and other ATP requiring processes such as ion transport.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the effect of the interaction between resource rents and democracy on corruption and internal conflict for a panel of 29 Sub-Saharan African countries during the period from 1985 to 2007, and find that higher resource rents lead to more corruption and that the effect is significantly stronger in less democratic countries.
Abstract: We examine the effect of the interaction between resource rents and democracy on corruption and internal conflict for a panel of 29 Sub-Saharan African countries during the period from 1985 to 2007. We find that higher resource rents lead to more corruption and that the effect is significantly stronger in less democratic countries. Surprisingly, we also find that higher resource rents lead to fewer internal conflicts and that less democratic countries face not a higher, but a lower likelihood of conflicts following an increase in resource rents. We argue that these findings can be explained by the ability of the political elites in less democratic countries to more effectively quell the masses through redistribution of rents to the public. We support our argument by documenting that higher resource rents lead to more (less) government spending in less (more) democratic countries. Our findings suggest that the mechanisms through which resource rents affect corruption cannot be separated from political systems.

TL;DR: In this article, the results from paleomagnetic measurements on Icelandic rocks are presented and discussed, with special reference to the interpretation of local aeromagnetic anomalies, and it is concluded that linear anomalies extending along the central Neo-volcanic zone can be explained by the large and uniform magnetization of Quaternary basalt formations.

TL;DR: In this article, detailed deuterium and chemical analyses have been carried out on ground water from several areas in Iceland, and it is shown that deutium measurements are useful for distinguishing between different water systems, even in the same geothermal field.

TL;DR: A survey of geophysical research in Iceland related to this problem is given in this paper, which includes measurements of geothermal gradient and electrical conductivity, seismic sounding, observation of earthquakes, crustal displacement, gravity, paleomagnetism and geomagnetic surveys.
Abstract: As the largest island on the worldwide ocean ridge system, Iceland may offer the possibility to study on land some of the characteristic features of ocean ridges. The paper gives a survey of geophysical research in Iceland related to this problem. It includes measurements of geothermal gradient and electrical conductivity, seismic sounding, observation of earthquakes, crustal displacement, gravity, paleomagnetism and geomagnetic surveys.

TL;DR: In this paper, the geochemical results show that two distinct chemical types of thermal water exist in the area: a shallow aquifer with a moderate concentration of dissolved solids (temp. 120-150°C).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a technique is developed for treating matrix elements of charge-divergence commutators between the vacuum and one-particle states, and it is found that the charge-charge algebra and the asymptotic behaviour of certain three-point functions determine special linear combinations of such matrix elements.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors made a calculation of the manufacturing cost of heavy water by the H2S/H2O ion exchange method with geothermal steam supplying the process heat.
