TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a large extra dimensions model and a quark and lepton compositeness model with a left-left isoscalar contact interaction to search for both narrow resonances and broad deviations from standard model predictions.
Abstract: Dimuon and dielectron mass spectra, obtained from data resulting from proton-proton collisions at 8 TeV and recorded by the CMS experiment, are used to search for both narrow resonances and broad deviations from standard model predictions. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.6 (19.7) fb^(−1) for the dimuon (dielectron) channel. No evidence for non-standard-model physics is observed and 95% confidence level limits are set on parameters from a number of new physics models. The narrow resonance analyses exclude a Sequential Standard Model Z'_(SSM) resonance lighter than 2.90 TeV, a superstring-inspired Z'_ψ lighter than 2.57 TeV, and Randall-Sundrum Kaluza-Klein gravitons with masses below 2.73, 2.35, and 1.27 TeV for couplings of 0.10, 0.05, and 0.01, respectively. A notable feature is that the limits have been calculated in a model-independent way to enable straightforward reinterpretation in any model predicting a resonance structure. The observed events are also interpreted within the framework of two non-resonant analyses: one based on a large extra dimensions model and one based on a quark and lepton compositeness model with a left-left isoscalar contact interaction. Lower limits are established on MS, the scale characterizing the onset of quantum gravity, which range from 4.9 to 3.3 TeV, where the number of additional spatial dimensions varies from 3 to 7. Similarly, lower limits on Λ, the energy scale parameter for the contact interaction, are found to be 12.0 (15.2) TeV for destructive (constructive) interference in the dimuon channel and 13.5 (18.3) TeV in the dielectron channel.

TL;DR: In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation of metolachlor was studied using TiO 2 copatalysts, which exhibit a rough, nanocrystalline configuration, ideal for heterogeneous processes.
Abstract: The photocatalytic degradation of the herbicide metolachlor is studied, using TiO 2 photocatalysts. Apart from the titania aqueous dispersions, immobilized semiconductor thin films were used in order to evaluate their effectiveness. The films exhibit a rough, nanocrystalline configuration, ideal for heterogeneous processes. Additionally the thin films were silver modified to determine if noble metal nanoclusters affect the photocatalytic efficiency. The kinetics obtained demonstrated that powder titania ( t 1/2 =21 min) was more efficient for the photocatalytic decomposition of metolachlor compared to pure titania thin film catalysts ( t 1/2 =52 min), while the presence of silver ions in TiO 2 particles modification did not prove to promote the solar photocatalytic process. Intermediate products from the slurry system were isolated and identified by means of solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled to gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy techniques (GC–MS). A proposed degradation pathway of metolachlor is presented, involving mainly hydroxylation and dealkylation reactions. In addition, toxicity studies based on the luminescence of the bacteria Vibrio fischeri before and after the photocatalytic treatment were performed. The results demonstrated that the transient intermediates formed were more toxic compared to parent compound. At low photocatalyst loads, the toxicity of the irradiated solution remains relatively high even though 88% of metolachlor is decomposed.

TL;DR: In this article, measurements from the CMS experiment at the LHC of dihadron correlations for charged particles produced in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV are presented.
Abstract: Measurements from the CMS experiment at the LHC of dihadron correlations for charged particles produced in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV are presented. The results are reported as a function of the particle transverse momenta (pt) and collision centrality over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity [Delta(eta)] and the full range of relative azimuthal angle [Delta(phi)]. The observed two-dimensional correlation structure in Delta(eta) and Delta(phi) is characterised by a narrow peak at Delta(eta), Delta(phi) approximately (0, 0) from jet-like correlations and a long-range structure that persists up to at least |Delta(eta)| = 4. An enhancement of the magnitude of the short-range jet peak is observed with increasing centrality, especially for particles of pt around 1-2 GeV/c. The long-range azimuthal dihadron correlations are extensively studied using a Fourier decomposition analysis. The extracted Fourier coefficients are found to factorise into a product of single-particle azimuthal anisotropies up to pt approximately 3-3.5 GeV/c for at least one particle from each pair, except for the second-order harmonics in the most central PbPb events. Various orders of the single-particle azimuthal anisotropy harmonics are extracted for associated particle pt of 1-3 GeV/c, as a function of the trigger particle pt up to 20 GeV/c and over the full centrality range.

TL;DR: In this article, a low-mass search for resonances decaying into pairs of jets is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at s√=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 36 fb−1.
Abstract: Searches for resonances decaying into pairs of jets are performed using proton-proton collision data collected at s√=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 36 fb−1. A low-mass search, for resonances with masses between 0.6 and 1.6 TeV, is performed based on events with dijets reconstructed at the trigger level from calorimeter information. A high-mass search, for resonances with masses above 1.6 TeV, is performed using dijets reconstructed offline with a particle-flow algorithm. The dijet mass spectrum is well described by a smooth parameterization and no evidence for the production of new particles is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are reported on the production cross section for narrow resonances with masses above 0.6 TeV. In the context of specific models, the limits exclude string resonances with masses below 7.7 TeV, scalar diquarks below 7.2 TeV, axigluons and colorons below 6.1 TeV, excited quarks below 6.0 TeV, color-octet scalars below 3.4 TeV, W′ bosons below 3.3 TeV, Z′ bosons below 2.7 TeV, Randall-Sundrum gravitons below 1.8 TeV and in the range 1.9 to 2.5 TeV, and dark matter mediators below 2.6 TeV. The limits on both vector and axial-vector mediators, in a simplified model of interactions between quarks and dark matter particles, are presented as functions of dark matter particle mass and coupling to quarks. Searches are also presented for broad resonances, including for the first time spin-1 resonances with intrinsic widths as large as 30% of the resonance mass. The broad resonance search improves and extends the exclusions of a dark matter mediator to larger values of its mass and coupling to quarks.

TL;DR: A collagen fibril is made up of long rod-like molecules regularly D-staggered with respect to one another, which means that its axially projected fine structure repeats D-periodically (D = 67 nm), and the amino acid residues contributing to each element of the fine structure can be inferred from sequence data.
