TL;DR: Evidence was gained to suggest that several chromosomal loci regulate BMD in a site‐specific and sex‐specific manner.
Abstract: Several genome-wide scans have been performed to detect loci that regulate BMD, but these have yielded inconsistent results, with limited replication of linkage peaks in different studies. In an effort to improve statistical power for detection of these loci, we performed a meta-analysis of genome-wide scans in which spine or hip BMD were studied. Evidence was gained to suggest that several chromosomal loci regulate BMD in a site-specific and sex-specific manner

01 Jan 2019TL;DR: The objective of this paper is to go through the main research efforts that contributed to this research field, reveal the main issues, and disclose those points that are helpful in understanding the hypotheses, the restrictions, or even the inability of applying No Free Lunch theorems.
Abstract: The “No Free Lunch” theorem states that, averaged over all optimization problems, without re-sampling, all optimization algorithms perform equally well. Optimization, search, and supervised learning are the areas that have benefited more from this important theoretical concept. Formulation of the initial No Free Lunch theorem, very soon, gave rise to a number of research works which resulted in a suite of theorems that define an entire research field with significant results in other scientific areas where successfully exploring a search space is an essential and critical task. The objective of this paper is to go through the main research efforts that contributed to this research field, reveal the main issues, and disclose those points that are helpful in understanding the hypotheses, the restrictions, or even the inability of applying No Free Lunch theorems.

TL;DR: A statistical combination of several searches for the electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos is presented in this article, where a targeted analysis requiring three or more charged leptons (electrons or muons) is presented, focusing on the challenging scenario in which the difference in mass between the two least massive neutralino is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson.
Abstract: A statistical combination of several searches for the electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos is presented. All searches use proton-proton collision data at $ \sqrt{s}=13 $ TeV, recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{−1}$. In addition to the combination of previous searches, a targeted analysis requiring three or more charged leptons (electrons or muons) is presented, focusing on the challenging scenario in which the difference in mass between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson. The results are interpreted in simplified models of chargino-neutralino or neutralino pair production. For chargino-neutralino production, in the case when the lightest neutralino is massless, the combination yields an observed (expected) limit at the 95% confidence level on the chargino mass of up to 650 (570) GeV, improving upon the individual analysis limits by up to 40 GeV. If the mass difference between the two least massive neutralinos is approximately equal to the mass of the Z boson in the chargino-neutralino model, the targeted search requiring three or more leptons obtains observed and expected exclusion limits of around 225 GeV on the second neutralino mass and 125 GeV on the lightest neutralino mass, improving the observed limit by about 60 GeV in both masses compared to the previous CMS result. In the neutralino pair production model, the combined observed (expected) exclusion limit on the neutralino mass extends up to 650–750 (550–750) GeV, depending on the branching fraction assumed. This extends the observed exclusion achieved in the individual analyses by up to 200 GeV. The combined result additionally excludes some intermediate gaps in the mass coverage of the individual analyses.

01 Nov 2005TL;DR: This paper dives into the logical design of ETL scenarios and provides a generic and customizable framework in order to support the DW designer in his task and discusses the mechanics of template instantiation to concrete activities.
Abstract: Extraction-transformation-loading (ETL) tools are pieces of software responsible for the extraction of data from several sources, their cleansing, customization and insertion into a data warehouse. In this paper, we delve into the logical design of ETL scenarios and provide a generic and customizable framework in order to support the DW designer in his task. First, we present a metamodel particularly customized for the definition of ETL activities. We follow a workflow-like approach, where the output of a certain activity can either be stored persistently or passed to a subsequent activity. Also, we employ a declarative database programming language, LDL, to define the semantics of each activity. The metamodel is generic enough to capture any possible ETL activity. Nevertheless, in the pursuit of higher reusability and flexibility, we specialize the set of our generic metamodel constructs with a palette of frequently used ETL activities, which we call templates. Moreover, in order to achieve a uniform extensibility mechanism for this library of built-ins, we have to deal with specific language issues. Therefore, we also discuss the mechanics of template instantiation to concrete activities. The design concepts that we introduce have been implemented in a tool, ARKTOS II, which is also presented.

TL;DR: The impact of silent iodine prophylaxis on the prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis among schoolchildren in a formerly iodine-deficient community in northwestern Greece was investigated in this paper.
Abstract: The current iodine status and the impact of silent iodine prophylaxis on the prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis among schoolchildren in a formerly iodine-deficient community in northwestern Greece, were investigated. The findings were compared to those obtained from a similar survey conducted 7 years previously in the same area. A total of 302 schoolchildren (12-18 years of age) from a mountainous area of northwestern Greece were examined for the presence of goiter, and blood and urine samples were collected for assessment of thyroid function, antithyroid antibodies and urinary iodine excretion. In those children (n = 42) with palpable goiter or positive antibodies and/or a thyrotropin (TSH) level greater than 5 mU/L, thyroid ultrasonography was performed to estimate thyroid gland size and morphology. Median urinary iodine concentration in the children was 20.21 microg/dL, indicating sufficient iodine intake. Thyroid function was normal in all but 7 children, who had subclinical hypothyroidism (2.5%). Antithyroid antibodies (antithyroid peroxidase [TPO] and/or antithyroglobulin [Tg]) were positive in 32 children, including those with subclinical hypothyroidism (10.6%). Twenty-nine of these children (9.6%) also had the characteristic echo pattern of thyroiditis on ultrasound and were diagnosed to have autoimmune thyroiditis. In comparison to data from our previous survey 7 years ago, there has been a threefold increase in the prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis among schoolchildren. In conclusion, silent iodine prophylaxis has resulted in the elimination of iodine deficiency in Greece, and this has been accompanied by an increase in the prevalence of autoimmune thyroiditis.
