Abstract: Emfietzoglou, D. and Nikjoo, H. The Effect of Model Approximations on Single-Collision Distributions of Low-Energy Electrons in Liquid Water. Radiat. Res. 163, 98–111 (2005). The development of cross sections for the inelastic interaction of low-energy electrons with condensed tissue-like media is best accomplished within the framework of the dielectric theory. In this work we investigate the degree to which various model approximations, used in the above methodology, influence electron single-collision distributions. These distributions are of major importance to Monte Carlo track structure codes, namely, the energy-loss spectrum, the inelastic inverse mean free path, and the ionization efficiency. In particular, we make quantitative assessment of the influence of (1) the optical data set, (2) the dispersion algorithm, and (3) the perturbation and exchange Born corrections. Abstract: In searches for new physics in the energy regime of the LHC, it is becoming increasingly important to distinguish single-jet objects that originate from the merging of the decay products of W bosons produced with high transverse momenta from jets initiated by single partons. Algorithms are defined to identify such W jets for different signals of interest, using techniques that are also applicable to other decays of bosons to hadrons that result in a single jet, such as those from highly boosted Z and Higgs bosons. The efficiency for tagging W jets is measured in data collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. The performance of W tagging in data is compared with predictions from several Monte Carlo simulators.

Abstract: NMR-based metabonomic analysis is a well-established approach to characterizing healthy and diseased states. The aim of this study was to investigate inter-individual variability in the metabolic urinary profile of a healthy Greek population, not subjected to strict dietary limitations, by NMR-based metabonomics. The overall metabonomic urinalysis showed a homogeneous distribution among the population. The metabolic profile was examined in relation to gender and age, and reference intervals of major metabolites were determined. Multivariate data analysis led to the construction of two robust models that were able to predict the class membership of the subjects studied according to their gender and age. The most influential low molecular weight metabolites responsible for the differences in gender groups were citrate, creatinine, trimethylamine N-oxide, glycine, creatine and taurine, and for the differences in age groups they were citrate, creatinine, trimethylamine N-oxide and an unidentified metabolite (delta 3.78).
