Abstract: Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a global epidemic associated with increased health expenditure, and low quality of life. Many non-genetic risk factors have been suggested, but their overall epidemiological credibility has not been assessed. Methods We searched PubMed to capture all meta-analyses and Mendelian randomization studies for risk factors of T2DM. For each association, we estimated the summary effect size, its 95% confidence and prediction interval, and the I2 metric. We examined the presence of small-study effects and excess significance bias. We assessed the epidemiological credibility through a set of predefined criteria. Results We captured 86 eligible papers (142 associations) covering a wide range of biomarkers, medical conditions, and dietary, lifestyle, environmental and psychosocial factors. Adiposity, low hip circumference, serum biomarkers (increased level of alanine aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, uric acid and C-reactive protein, and decreased level of adiponectin and vitamin D), an unhealthy dietary pattern (increased consumption of processed meat and sugar-sweetened beverages, decreased intake of whole grains, coffee and heme iron, and low adherence to a healthy dietary pattern), low level of education and conscientiousness, decreased physical activity, high sedentary time and duration of television watching, low alcohol drinking, smoking, air pollution, and some medical conditions (high systolic blood pressure, late menarche age, gestational diabetes, metabolic syndrome, preterm birth) presented robust evidence for increased risk of T2DM. Conclusions A healthy lifestyle pattern could lead to decreased risk for T2DM. Future randomized clinical trials should focus on identifying efficient strategies to modify harmful daily habits and predisposing dietary patterns.

Abstract: If the dark energy equation of state parameter w(z) crosses the phantom divide line w = −1 (or equivalently if the expression d(H2(z))/dz−3Ω0mH02(1+z)2 changes sign) at recent redshifts, then there are two possible cosmological implications. Either the dark energy consists of multiple components with at least one non-canonical phantom component or general relativity needs to be extended to a more general theory on cosmological scales. The former possibility requires the existence of a phantom component which has been shown to suffer from serious theoretical problems and instabilities. Therefore, the latter possibility is the simplest realistic theoretical framework in which such a crossing can be realized. After providing a pedagogical description of various dark energy observational probes, we use a set of such probes (including the Gold SnIa (supernovae type Ia) sample, the first-year SNLS (Supernova Legacy Survey) data-set, the three-year WMAP CMB (Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe cosmic microwave background) shift parameter, the SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) baryon acoustic oscillations peak (BAO), the x-ray gas mass fraction in clusters and the linear growth rate of perturbations at z = 0.15 as obtained from the 2dF (Two-Degree Field) Galaxy Redshift Survey) to investigate the priors required for cosmological observations to favour crossing of the phantom divide. We find that a low Ω0m prior (0.2<Ω0m<0.25) leads, for most observational probes (except of the SNLS data), to an increased probability (mild trend) for phantom divide crossing. An interesting degeneracy of the integrated Sachs–Wolfe effect in the CMB perturbation spectrum is also pointed out.

Abstract: Oregano vulgare L. ssp. hirtum (Greek oregano), Salvia fruticosa (Greek sage), and Satureja hortensis (summer savory) were examined as potential sources of phenolic antioxidant compounds. The antioxidant capacities (antiradical activity by DPPH* test, phosphatidylcholine liposome oxidation, Rancimat test) and total phenol content were determined in the ethanol and acetone extracts of the dried material obtained from the botanically characterized plants. The ground material was also tested by the Rancimat test for its effect on the stability of sunflower oil. The data indicated that ground material and both ethanol and acetone extracts had antioxidant activity. Chromatographic (TLC, RP-HPLC) and NMR procedures were employed to cross-validate the presence of antioxidants in ethanol and acetone extracts. The major component of all ethanol extracts was rosmarinic acid as determined by RP-HPLC and NMR. Chromatography indicated the presence of other phenolic antioxidants, mainly found in the acetone extracts. The presence of the flavones luteolin and apigenin and the flavonol quercetin was confirmed in the majority of the extracts by the use of a novel (1)H NMR procedure, which is based on the strongly deshielded OH protons in the region of 12-13 ppm without previous chromatographic separation. This deshielding may be attributed to the strong intramolecular six-membered ring hydrogen bond of the OH(5)...CO(4) moiety.

Abstract: A study is presented of the mass and spin-parity of the new boson recently observed at the LHC at a mass near 125 GeV. An integrated luminosity of 17.3 fb^(-1), collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, is used. The measured mass in the ZZ channel, where both Z bosons decay to e or μ pairs, is 126.2±0.6(stat)±0.2(syst) GeV. The angular distributions of the lepton pairs in this channel are sensitive to the spin-parity of the boson. Under the assumption of spin 0, the present data are consistent with the pure scalar hypothesis, while disfavoring the pure pseudoscalar hypothesis.
