Abstract: Results of searches for heavy stable charged particles produced in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 and 8 TeV are presented corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns and 18.8 inverse femtobarns, respectively. Data collected with the CMS detector are used to study the momentum, energy deposition, and time-of-flight of signal candidates. Leptons with an electric charge between e/3 and 8e, as well as bound states that can undergo charge exchange with the detector material, are studied. Analysis results are presented for various combinations of signatures in the inner tracker only, inner tracker and muon detector, and muon detector only. Detector signatures utilized are long time-of-flight to the outer muon system and anomalously high (or low) energy deposition in the inner tracker. The data are consistent with the expected background, and upper limits are set on the production cross section of long-lived gluinos, scalar top quarks, and scalar tau leptons, as well as pair produced long-lived leptons. Corresponding lower mass limits, ranging up to 1322 GeV for gluinos, are the most stringent to date.

Abstract: A multi-scale, object-based analysis of a Quickbird satellite image has been carried out to delineate forest vegetation polygons in a natural forest in Northern Greece. Following a multi-resolution segmentation, a classification tree was developed and compared using a nearest neighbour classifier for the assignment of image segments to classes. Additionally, texture images derived from local indicators of spatial association were calculated and used to improve the classification. The best results were obtained when texture images were considered in the classification sequence, however, the accuracy of the final map did not exceed 80%. The classification tree yielded better results than the nearest neighbour algorithm. Overall, the object-based classification approach presented both advantages and limitations, which have to be considered prior to its operational use in mapping Mediterranean forest ecosystems.

Abstract: Thyroid dysfunction has a great impact on lipids as well as a number of other cardiovascular risk factors. Hypothyroidism is relatively common and is associated with an unfavorable effect on lipids. Substitution therapy is bene- ficial for patients with overt hypothyroidism, improving lipid profile. However, whether subclinical hypothyroidism should be treated or not is a matter of debate. On the other hand, hyperthyroidism can be associated with acquired hypo- cholesterolemia or unexplained improvement of lipid profile. Overall, thyroid dysfunction should be taken into account when evaluating and treating dyslipidemic patients.

Abstract: The photocatalytic degradation of selected s-triazine herbicides and organophosphorus insecticides was carried out in aqueous TiO2 suspensions under simulated solar light. The tested herbicides from the s-triazines group were atrazine, propazine, cyanazine, prometryne, and irgarol. The tested insecticides from the organophosphorus group were ethyl parathion, methyl parathion, ethyl bromophos, methyl bromophos, and diclofenthion. Degradation kinetics followed first-order reaction and has been monitored through gas chromatography. The degradation was fast with half-lives varying from 10.2 to 38.3 min depending on the nature and the structure of compounds. The generated transformation products (TPs) were formed via oxidation, dealkylation, and dechlorination for s-triazines and via oxidation and photohydrolysis for organophosphates. The TPs of irgarol, bromophos, and dichlofenthion were identified using solid-phase extraction (SDB-disks) and GC-MS techniques, and possible degradation routes were proposed showing similar degradation pathways as for other triazines and organophosporus pesticides. This work points out to the necessity of extended knowledge of the successive steps in a solar-assisted detoxification process.
