TL;DR: It is suggested the replacement of intravenous hydrocortisone sodium succinate with dexamethasone in the treatment of such a population of patients with intrinsic asthma and aspirin sensitivity.
Abstract: Eleven patients with intrinsic asthma and aspirin sensitivity were challenged with intravenous hydrocortisone sodium succinate (Solu-Cortef; the Upjohn Co., Kalamazoo, Mich.). Three patients showed definite evidence of bronchospasm, which was easily reversed by subcutaneous administration of epinephrine. Evidence is presented which suggests that this reaction was not caused by other constituents of the preparation but rather was caused by Solu-Cortef alone. No atopy was demonstrated in the group as a whole, and the reaction observed was probably nonallergic in nature. We suggest the replacement of intravenous hydrocortisone sodium succinate with dexamethasone in the treatment of such a population.

TL;DR: The Triassic sequence of Jordan east of the Rift-valley consists of an over 1000 m thick sequence of sedimentary rocks as mentioned in this paper, which were deposited near the shore, either under terrestrial conditions within the intertidal range just offshore, or under saline conditions in a sabkha lagoonal environment.
Abstract: The Triassic sequence of Jordan east of the Rift-valley consists of an over 1000 m thick sequence of sedimentary rocks. These sediments were deposited near the shore, either under terrestrial conditions within the intertidal range just offshore, or under saline conditions in a sabkha lagoonal environment. Nine formations are described: Um Irna (80 m), Ma'in (40 m), Dardun (60 m), Ain Musa (80 m), Hisban (35 m), Mukheiris (90 m), Iraq al Amir (170 m), Um Tina (260 m), Abu Ruweis (200 m). With the exception of large parts of the Um Tina and the Abu Ruweis Formations all other formations are exposed along the NE coast of the Dead Sea and the deep wadis just E and NE of it. Each formation is defined by a type section. The sedimentary rocks are intruded by dykes and sills composed of diabase and gabbro of uniform composition and older than Upper Jurassic in age. Comparison of Triassic rocks from the west side of the Rift (DRUCKMAN 1974, 1977) indicates that the facies and thickness of Jordanian Triassic rocks as well as the northernmost limit of intrusive rocks can only be fitted with those of the central Negev. A relative movement of the Abrabian block against Palestine-Sinai of at least 100 km along the Rift is probable (BANDEL 1981).

TL;DR: In this article, three different estimators for Pr(X < Y) when X and Y have a bivariate exponential distribution are provided, and the asymptotic variances of the three estimators are also derived.
Abstract: This paper provides three different estimators for Pr(X < Y) when X and Y have a bivariate exponential distribution. The asymptotic variances of the three estimators are also derived. A test for the equality of the means of X and Y and confidence limits for the difference of the two means are presented. Our results are directly applicable in a reliability context with underlying bivariate exponential distribution.

TL;DR: It is concluded that while enteric fevers lead to a mild illness in the older child, in infants and very young children the fevers were often characterized by a severe and protracted illness, the seriousness of which was complicated by delay in diagnosis.
Abstract: The experience with enteric fevers in 71 children hospitalized at the Jordan University Hospital over a 4-year period is reviewed. Forty-one children were male and 30 female. Salmonella typhi was the causative organism in 26 and Salmonella paratyphi A and B, in the remaining 45 patients. Twenty-five children were less than two years of age, and the remaining 46, older than two. Gastroenteritis-like symptoms were seen more often in the younger age group, who also tended to lack splenomegaly and leukopenia. Further, the younger children were sicker at the time of admission and had a longer illness than the older ones. It is concluded that while enteric fevers lead to a mild illness in the older child, in infants and very young children the fevers were often character ized by a severe and protracted illness, the seriousness of which was complicated by delay in diagnosis.

TL;DR: In this article, the concentration of 11 elements in cigarette tobacco of four brands commercially made in Jordan, and one foreign brand was determined using Proton-induced X-ray emission spectroscopy.
Abstract: Proton-induced X-ray emission spectroscopy was applied to determine the concentration of 11 elements in cigarette tobacco of four brands commercially made in Jordan, and one foreign brand. The results are expressed in absolute amount per cigarette. Cigarette wrapping paper and cigarette smoke were also analyzed. The significance of some of the elements found in the samples are discussed.

TL;DR: A 20-year-old female who underwent excision of the submandibular gland for chronic sialadenitis and salivary calculus developed a wound hematoma which became infected and led to the formation of a combined laryngocele.
Abstract: A 20-year-old female underwent excision of the submandibular gland for chronic sialadenitis and salivary calculus. She developed a wound hematoma which became infected. A wound abscess occurred which discharged spontaneously into the larynx and led to the formation of a combined laryngocele. This was excised, and the patient made a smooth recovery. There is no evidence of recurrence after two years.

TL;DR: The present investigation was undertaken to help clarify the age at which a change from being absorber to malabsorber occurs in a group of Jordanian infants and young children.
Abstract: Lactase deficiency resulting in gastrointestinal disturbance and lactose intolerance has been reported among various racial and ethnic populations (1-3, 5, 7-10). The present investigation was undertaken to help clarify the age at which a change from being absorber to malabsorber occurs in a group of Jordanian infants and young children. The subjects of this study were 186 normal healthy Jordanian infants and young children who were residents of a Welfare Orphanage and students of its attached kindergarten in the city of Amman. All of them were white Arabs who had no serious illness which could affect their overall health and nutrition. The ages of the children (95 males and 91 femalks) ranged from 15 days to 12 years. Following an overnight fast, duplicate blood specimens were taken for estimation of the fasting glucose level and to provide a basis of comparison for maximum blood glucose rise following administration of the lactose load. The mean value of the two measurements was recorded. An oral dose of 2 g lactose per kg body weight was given to young infants and children weighing less than 25 kg and a test dose of 50 g to older children. The lactose was given as 15 % solution by mouth to older children, and by naso-gastric tube to younger infants. Four duplicate fingerprick blood samples were taken at fasting and then at intervals of 15, 30, 60 and 90 min following lactose consumption. The mean values of each of the two readings were recorded. The blood was immediately deproteinized in I . O ml of 0.33 N perchloric acid, centrifuged at 6000 rpm, and separated into clean plastic disposable blood tubes. The results were estimated by the glucose oxidase method of Boehringer (Boehringer-Mannheim, W. Germany). Informed consent was obtained from the orphanage supervisors as well as from the parents. Lactose malabsorption in this study refers to an inability to digest/absorb lactose as a result of low lactase activity. Normal lactose absorption was indicated when the maximum rise in blood glucose was greater than 1.1 mmol/l (20 mg/l00 ml). Lactose intolerance refers to malabsorption of lactose plus the presence of one or more of the following symptoms: Pain flatulence, distention and diarrhea over an 8-hour period following the administration of the lactose solution. The attending nurse was requested to observe and report the onset of these symptoms. Lactose intolerance expressed as a rise in blood gl~!cose of less than I . I mmol/l plus the presence of symptoms is shown in Figs. I and

TL;DR: In this paper, the representation of probability distribution functions by Walsh series expansions is discussed, and the resulting expansions are consequently utilized in the derivation of useful expressions for the moments of corresponding probability distributions.
Abstract: This paper discusses the representation of probability distribution functions by Walsh series expansions. Generally, such expansions may be employed for the representation of multivariate distributions. However, we confine attention here to univariate and bivariate distributions. The resulting expansions are consequently utilized in the derivation of useful expressions for the moments of corresponding probability distributions. Applications of Walsh expansions of probability distributions are further illustrated by computing output moments for some general classes of nonlinear systems.

Abstract: In the Middle East in the last decade there has been a rapid expansion in the production of poultry meat and table eggs with the development of associated sectors, such as feed mills, hatcheries and breeding farms. This development has been reported in many articles (Anon., 1978) and is especially true in Jordan (Abdul Rahim, 1978; Anon., 1968–1978; Anon., 1979; Daghir, 1970; Daniels, 1969; and Pitcher, 1977) (Table 5.5.1).

TL;DR: It is concluded that the time factor is an important criterion for the differential diagnosis between obstruction of the central retinal artery and the internal carotid artery when ODM is used.
Abstract: A comparative study of obstruction of the central retinal artery and thrombosis of the internal carotid artery was done. The ophthalmodyna mometry method (ODM) was used. The statistical analysis of the 2 indepen dent groups shows that ODM allows a differential diagnosis between both conditions within the first and fourth weeks after the manifestation of ocular ischemia. During the second and third weeks, it is not possible to localize the site of obstruction. One concludes that the time factor is an important criterion for the differential diagnosis between obstruction of the central retinal artery and the internal carotid artery when ODM is used.
