TL;DR: In this article, the authors used scanning electron microscopy to examine the surface of the beads with and without sulphamethoxazole as a model drug and found that the release behavior was a function of calcium chloride concentration.
Abstract: Calcium alginate beads impregnated with sulphamethoxazole as model drug were prepared and characterized. Scanning electron microscope was used to examine their surface with and without the drug. The bead average diameter was 1.25mm and the sulphamethoxazole uptake by the beads was about half of the incorporated quantity. The release behaviour was followed using USP dissolution method. The effect on release of factors such as sodium alginate, calcium chloride concentration, pH, hydration and compression were studied. Sodium alginate concentrations had no pronounced effect on the release. The release was found to be a function of calcium chloride concentration. The higher the concentration the lower the release. The smaller the water content the lower the release from the beads. Compression of the beads yields a deformed beads with an increase in their release. Plain calcium alginate beads were not suitable for sulphamethoxazole loading. Sulphamethoxazole diffusion through calcium alginate film was ...

TL;DR: Active inflammation of the gastroduodenal mucosa likely accounts for the symptoms in patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia and an endoscopically normal mucosa was more likely to be associated with a normal neutrophil count.
Abstract: Proper control and quantitation are important in the accurate evaluation of gastroduodenal inflammation in dyspeptic patients without ulcers or erosions as proved by endoscopy. The endoscopic findings and the gastroduodenal mucosal inflammatory cell count in 31 patients with nonulcer dyspepsia were compared with an age-matched group of 32 healthy controls. Endoscopy revealed similar mucosal changes and in similar frequency in both groups. Differential mucosal inflammatory cell count showed a statistically significant (P<0.001) increase in the neutrophil count in the gastric body, antrum, and duodenal cap of the dyspeptic group, as well as a slight but significant (P<0.05) increase in the round cell and eosinophil count of the duodenal mucosa alone. No correlation was found between the endoscopic changes and an increase in neutrophil count above a normal level determined by the healthy controls. However, an endoscopically normal mucosa was more likely to be associated with a normal neutrophil count. Active inflammation of the gastroduodenal mucosa likely accounts for the symptoms in patients with nonulcer dyspepsia.

TL;DR: A computationally convenient expression is presented for the error rate involved in digital data transmission in nonlinear channels with memory using a particular form of Volterra series representation.
Abstract: This paper considers the performance of digital data transmission in nonlinear channels with memory. The analysis is based on the application of a particular form of Volterra series representation for the nonlinear system describing the transmission channel. First, expressions are derived for the output mean and power spectral density under certain conditions. Next, the paper presents a computationally convenient expression for the error rate involved in such transmission.

TL;DR: Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index indicate that the main spawning season of Parupeneus barberinus in Aqaba extends from May to August for females and from may to June for males.
Abstract: Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index indicate that the main spawning season of Parupeneus barberinus in Aqaba extends from May to August for females and from May to June for males. Males in the 4 years age-group (63–4%) and the 5 years age-group (65–1%) are predominant. The von Bertalanffy growth equation parameters calculated from mean total length data are: Lα= 32–8cm; K=0–225; (to=−0–73 for males and Lα= 32–7cm; K=0–206; to=−0.82 for females. The length-weight regression coefficients for males (2.85) and females (2.8) are not significantly different and they indicate a negative allometric growth. There is no significant change in condition factor with age.

Abstract: At least 193 cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis occurred in eight villages of Mowaqqar area, Jordan, between December 1982 and April 1983. Peak transmission of the disease is thought to have taken place in late summer 1982. Approximately 67% of the cases were below 15 years of age and the lesions seen were of the dry type. The sand jird, Psammomys obesus, and the sandfly, Phlebotomus papatasi, the potential animal reservoir and vector of the disease respectively, were found in the affected area. Furthermore, Leishmania amastigotes were seen in smears from ears of seven out of 11 jirds collected from the area suggesting the zoonotic nature of the disease there.

TL;DR: The food habits of the goatfish, Parupeneus barberinus, from Aqaba were studied and seasonal variations were observed in relation to food consumption, percentage weight composition and intensity of feeding.
Abstract: The food habits of the goatfish, Parupeneus barberinus, from Aqaba were studied. A total of 166 fish over a range of 15 to 27.7 cm and representing five age groups were examined. The major dietary components, based on occurrence, were crustaceans (82.6%), sand (71.1%), foramniferans (55%), detritus (52.3%) and polychaetes (49%). Based on gravimetric analysis, crustaceans and sand were the major food components comprising 54.4% and 23.3% of the total food weight respectively. The food consumption decreased from 1.5% of body weight in the 2-year group to 0.3% of body weight in the 6-year group. Seasonal variations were observed in relation to food consumption, percentage weight composition and intensity of feeding.

TL;DR: The germination of wheat grains was delayed, and the development of wheat seedlings was decreased in laboratory experiments by both shoot and rhizome extract, the inhibitory effect of both extracts was most pronounced at 20°C compared with 10 or 15°C.
Abstract: Summary The allelopathic effect of Salvia syriaca L. (Syrian sage) was examined against wheat in glasshouse and laboratory experiments. The germination of wheat grains was delayed, and the development of wheat seedlings was decreased in laboratory experiments by both shoot and rhizome extract. The inhibitory effect of both extracts was most pronounced at 20°C compared with 10 or 15°C. Shoot extracts had more drastic effects than the rhizome extract on germination percentage, shoot and root lengths. In glasshouse experiments fresh and dried shoot of S. syriaca added to soil drastically decreased germination and development of wheat.

TL;DR: The evidence that the Dead Sea rift has existed as a zone of crustal weakness since Precambrian time is critically examined based on the distribution and abundance of dykes and the distribution of the Lower Cambrian basal conglomerates as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The evidence that the Dead Sea rift has existed as a zone of crustal weakness since Precambrian time is critically examined based on (i) the distribution and abundance of dykes in the Precambrian basement and (ii) the distribution of the Lower Cambrian basal conglomerates. It is shown that dyke and clastic sediment occurrence is not preferentially associated with the modern rift zone, and thus that some earlier tectonic interpretations must now be discounted.

TL;DR: The effect of numerous processing factors such as mixer geometry and design, power input, time of dry and wet mixing on the content uniformity of tablets containing potent drugs have been studied as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The effect of numerous processing factors such as mixer geometry and design, power input, time of dry and wet mixing on the content uniformity of tablets containing potent drugs have been studied. Cohesive drug powders and excipients have been used. Results show that pharmaceutically acceptable hamageneity is achieved after dry mixing far 7 hours in the Lodige-Marton mixer. It is shown that there is no significant improvement of homogeneity on increasing the time of wet mixing in excess of 5 minutes, and the rate of breakdown of the drug agglomerates and dispersion of individual particles, under the experimental conditions, is very slow. The high energy input exerted by ball milling markedly improves the homogeneity of the powder mixes and the content uniformity of tablets. After 15 minutes of dry mixing, the state of homogeneity of the powder mix containing cohesive drug powder in minute amounts in cohesive excipient is not influenced by the type of mixer.

TL;DR: The results indicate that mainly heat-labile and cell-associated cytotonic and cytotoxic factors appear to influence the enterotoxigenic potential of this heterogenous group of non-O1 vibrios.
Abstract: Whole cultures, but not culture supernatant fluids, of 21 isolates of non-O1 V. cholerae from patients with diarrhea were shown to induce positive fluid accumulation in infant mice. CHO cell assays demonstrated the elaboration of heat-labile cytotonic, cytotoxic or both factors from most isolates when grown under optimal culture conditions. These factors were not neutralized by anti-cholera toxin serum. Also genetic studies performed on 9 vibrio isolates using a DNA hybridization probe failed to detect gene sequences homologous with cholera toxin. ELISA assays recognized six isolates which produced a cell-associated substance which immunologically cross-reacted with cholera toxin. Enzymatic profiles of the vibrio isolates did not correlate with the production of any toxic factor. The results indicate that mainly heat-labile and cell-associated cytotonic and cytotoxic factors appear to influence the enterotoxigenic potential of this heterogenous group of non-O1 vibrios.

TL;DR: In this article, the design and implementation of a satellite transponder's channelizing filter of degree 6 is discussed, in particular, the construction of the transmission coefficient, the synthesis procedure and the realization are discussed.
Abstract: In this paper some issues concerning the design and implementation of a satellite transponder's channelizing filter of degree 6 are discussed. In particular, the construction of the transmission coefficient, the synthesis procedure and the realization are discussed. the amplitude and the group delay responses of the filter are optimized simultaneously to meet prescribed requirements. the prototype filter has been synthesized as a cross-coupled array. Explicit formulae for the element values in terms of the real and the imaginary parts of the poles of the transmission coefficient are derived. Single mode direct coupled cavity realization with positive and negative couplings has been developed. an experimental filter has been constructed, the measured responses are very close to the computed ones.

Abstract: This paper investigates the characterization of nonlinear distortion produced in FDM systems under high-frequency operation, by using noise loading techniques. By employing a general Volterra-based model, the paper develops an appropriate noise loading technique for the assessment of nonlinear distortion in such wide-band transmission systems. The advantage of using Volterra series representation is that it takes account of system nonlinear-memory behavior in a combined formulation.

Abstract: While the 16O(d, α) nuclear reaction is the best nuclear reaction method for high resolution oxygen depth profiling, its use has been hampered by interfering reactions and electronic pulse pile-up. Employing a Si detector of 22 nm thickness, target tilting and a pulse pile-up rejection circuit with a pulse-pair resolution of 30 ns has made fast routine measurements easy. A depth resolution of 13 nm has been obtained and one of 5 nm appears feasible. Depending on the target composition, a detection sensitivity of down to 0.01 at.% oxygen is realizable.
