TL;DR: Residents of three remote villages and urban areas of Jordan were assessed for seroprevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and HBV infection, finding postnatal early childhood transmission through contact among children of poorer and larger families probably accounts for the high endemicity of HBV in this region.
Abstract: In 1985, the authors studied the epidemiology of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in a healthy Middle Eastern population. Residents of three remote villages and urban areas of Jordan were assessed for seroprevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and HBV infection. Infection was defined as the presence of antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (total) and/or antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen, with or without HBsAg. The overall HBsAg prevalence was 9.9% and was not age-related, although significant differences were noted between the villages (range, 5.7%-12.8%). The prevalence of HBV infection was 36% and increased with age. In addition, there were differences between the villages in patterns of age-specific infection. A newly constructed socioeconomic index showed greater HBsAg prevalence in lower (14.4%) than in upper (2.4%) socioeconomic groups. A history of contact with a jaundiced person and socioeconomic status were independent risk factors for HBsAg-positive status, while contact with a jaundiced person, rural background, and age were independently related to HBV infection. There was evidence of familial clustering of HBV in two of the villages, with HBV carriers and infected children particularly aggregating around HBsAg-positive siblings. There was also a trend toward an association of HBsAg-positive children with HbsAg-positive mothers. HBV carrier prevalence correlated with family size, and HBV infection in the household increased proportionately with the number of carriers in the family. Hepatitis B e antigen was detected most frequently in children and antibody to hepatitis B e antigen in adults. Postnatal early childhood transmission through contact among children of poorer and larger families probably accounts for the high endemicity of HBV in this region.

TL;DR: In this paper, the steady-state performance of a variable-voltage thyristor controlled induction motor system is analyzed based on the representation of the rotor as a sinusoidal EMF in series with a resistance-inductance circuit.
Abstract: A full analysis is presented of the steady-state performance of a variable-voltage thyristor controlled induction motor system, based on the representation of the rotor as a sinusoidal EMF in series with a resistance-inductance circuit. In the development of this circuit, magnetising current and stator resistance are included and the amplitude and phase of the EMF are determined as functions of motor torque and speed. This enables the full performance of the system to be evaluated for any of three specified conditions: current hold-off angle and speed, thyristor firing angle and speed, torque and speed. Good agreement is shown between computed and measured performance of an industrial drive system. The analysis reveals the influence of motor EMF, which is shown to improve system performance, particularly at small slips.

Abstract: Steady-state modeling, analysis, and solution of transistor-controlled systems are developed and experimentally verified over a wide range of operation. General features of the system performance and the effects of the chopping frequency on the performance parameters and harmonic generation are thoroughly investigated. Over most of the control range, and for chopping frequencies in the order of several hundred hertz and higher, it is demonstrated that the harmonic contents of the load current are almost negligible, providing highly desired operating conditions for many applications where the fundamental current is the only useful component. >

TL;DR: Partial sequences of three lysozymes from goat tears indicated that the goat tear family of ly sozymes may have diverged from the stomach lysozyme family by an ancient duplication and later duplications are probably responsible for the multiple forms of tear and milk lysozin in ruminants.
Abstract: Complete amino acid sequences are presented for lysozymesc from camel and goat stomachs and compared to sequences of other lysozymesc. Tree analysis suggests that the rate of amino acid replacement went up as soon as lysozyme was recruited for the stomach function in early ruminants. The two lysozymes from goat stomach are the products of a gene duplication that probably took place before the divergence of cow, goat, and deer about 25 million years ago. Partial sequences of three lysozymes from goat tears indicated that (a) the goat tear family of lysozymes may have diverged from the stomach lysozyme family by an ancient duplication and (b) later duplications are probably responsible for the multiple forms of tear and milk lysozymes in ruminants.

TL;DR: When predator numbers were reduced with insecticide applications, a significant increase in the bollworm populations occurred, resulting in significant reductions in seed cotton yields, and Parasites were relatively not important for the control of lepidopterous pests on cotton.
Abstract: Studies on the relationship between insect pests and their predators and parasites were conducted in the Syrian cotton agro-ecosystem from 1980 up to 1983.Earias insulana (Boisduval) was found to be the most damaging pest, whileHeliothis armigera (Hubner) was not an annual returning problem. Among the entomophagous insects found, coccinellids were most numerous during the months June and July and the hemipterous predators were more abundant during August and September. When predator numbers were reduced with insecticide applications, a significant increase in the bollworm populations occurred, resulting in significant reductions in seed cotton yields. Parasites were relatively not important for the control of lepidopterous pests on cotton. Egg and larva populations ofE. insulana andH. armigera were parasitized byTrichogramma spp. andHabrobracon brevicornis Wesmael respectively. Populations ofBemisia tabaci (Gennadius) were heavily parasitized byEretmocerus mundus Mercet.

TL;DR: In this article, the insertion and return losses and the equivalent input impedance in the 8 to 12 GHz frequency band were measured on composite material for different nickel-coated fiber concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 16 and 28 wt%.
Abstract: Some properties of nickel-coated carbon fibre-polypropylene composite are considered at microwave frequencies in the range 8 to 12 GHz. The paper presents the measured values of the insertion and return losses and the equivalent input impedance in the above frequency band. Measurements were performed on composite material for different nickel-coated fibre concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 16 and 28 wt%. The filler effects shows a transition region and identifies the dependency of the electrical properties on these concentrations. Furthermore, shielding effectiveness is calculated for the given concentrations and it is found that its value could reach more than 30 dB over the whole frequency band for a specimen of 2.6 mm thickness and with 28 wt% concentration.

Abstract: Three patients with a long-standing history of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) were found to have both microscopic hematuria and proteinuria during the acute attacks. Kidney biopsies from all patients revealed diffuse mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis with intense IgM and C3 deposits; all were negative for amyloidosis. To our knowledge this is the first time the development of IgM nephropathy in patients with FMF is described.

TL;DR: The results suggest that the volatile oil inhibits Ca2- influx through the potential dependent Ca2+ channels.
Abstract: The effect of the volatile oil of Teucrium polium was investigated in vitro using isolated segments of rabbit intestine. The volatile oil was found to inhibit the spontaneous movements of the intestine and the contractions of the intestine induced by depolarization with high potassium (K+) solution. Also, the volatile oil was found to inhibit 45Ca influx in the intestine in a dose dependent manner. Our results suggest that the volatile oil inhibits Ca2+ influx through the potential dependent Ca2+ channels.

TL;DR: The impact of several nematodes-antagonistic fungi on Heterodera schachtii and Meloidogyne javanica was investigated by inhibition of the fungi in field soil and by their addition to nematode cultures on media and in pots.
Abstract: The impact of several nematode-antagonistic fungi on Heterodera schachtii and Meloidogyne javanica was investigated by inhibition of the fungi in field soil and by their addition to nematode cultures on media and in pots. Application of fungicides resulted in increased H. schachtii multiplication rates. Similarly, soil pasteurization or application of fungicides increased the root galling index of tomato caused by M. javanica. On agar, Acremonium sclerotignum, a sterile fungus, Preussia sp., Verticillium chlamydosporium, and Fusarium solani resulted in 82-72% parasitism and disorder of H. schachtii eggs. V. chlamydosporium, and F. solani attained similar levels of parasitism of M. javanica eggs. Aspergillus versicolor, A. fumigatus, Cylindrocarpon olidium, F. oxysporum, F. equiseti, and F. solani macronidial isolate resulted in 25-46% egg parasitism of H. schachtii and/or M. javanica. In pots, the addition of F. oxysporum, A. flavus, Preussia sp., A. versicolor and F. solani on wheat grain media at 0.5% w:w reduced post harvest cyst numbers by 84, 75, 62, 55 and 46 % , respectively. Penicillium aurantiogresum, V. chlamydosporium and C. olidium did not affect cyst numbers. Of five fungal species added to soil, A. sclerotignum, F. oxysporum, and F. solani were able to reduce the tomato galling index caused by M. javanica.

Abstract: A virus isolated from stunted eggplant (Solanum melanogena L.) with severe vein yellowing, was identified as a strain of eggplant mottled dwarf rhabdovirus (EMDV-J) on the basis of host range, transmissibility and serology. The isolate is seemingly a unique strain of eggplant mottled dwarf virus that differs from the reported strains in the host range. The virus was recovered from Withania somnifera, a perennial plant, which suggests the availability of a virus reservoir at times when the Jordan valley is practically free from cultivated eggplants.

TL;DR: In this paper, a surge flow furrow irrigation model was developed based on the zero-inertia concept originally developed by Strelkoff and Kastapodes, (1977) for border irrigation and later modified for continuous and surge flow irrigation by Elliot et al. (1982).
Abstract: A surge flow furrow irrigation model was developed based on the zero-inertia concept originally developed by Strelkoff and Kastapodes, (1977) for border irrigation and later modified for continuous furrow irrigation by Elliot et al. (1982). The model simulates all phases of continuous and surge flow irrigation including simultaneous advance and recession and can also be applied to basin and border irrigation with various field slopes. The surge model was verified for a wide range of actual field conditions and management alternatives. A sensitivity analysis was performed for the size of time step and the physical input parameters.
