Abstract: Age dependence of the mechanical behavior of leg extensor muscle was investigated using vertical jumps with and without a stretch-shortening cycle on the force-platform. A total 226 subjects (113 females and 113 males) ranging in age from 4--73 years were examined. The results indicated in general that performance in males was better than that in females. This difference was reduced when body weight was taken into consideration. The peak performance of the various parameters, such as average force, height of rise of center of gravity, net impulse, and also the average power output, was reached in both sexes between the ages of 20 and 30 years. For example, the average vertical force in squatting had the following mean values in the various age groups of the male subjects: 114N (4--6 years), 402N (13--17), 618N (18--28), 508N (29--40), 435N (41--49), 320N (54--65), 315N (71--73 years). When the jumps were performed using the stretch-shortening cycle, the potential of the mechanical performance after prestretching was also sensitive to aging in a similar manner. The results suggest that it is not only the performance of pure concentric contraction that is influenced by the maturation and aging processes but, the that elastic behavior of muscle and reflex potentiation are also affected by the same processes.

Abstract: The capability of rodent-borne viruses to survive outside the host is critical for the transmission dynamics within rodent populations and to humans. The transmission of Puumala virus (PUUV) in colonized bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) was investigated and additional longevity studies in cell culture with PUUV and Tula (TULV) hantaviruses were performed. Wild-type PUUV excreted by experimentally infected donor bank voles was shown to be transmitted indirectly between rodents through contaminated beddings, and maintained its infectivity to recipient voles at room temperature for 12–15 days. In cell culture supernatants, PUUV and TULV remained infectious for 5–11 days at room temperature and up to 18 days at 4 °C, but were inactivated after 24 h at 37 °C. Interestingly, a fraction of dried virus was still infectious after 1 h at 56 °C. These results demonstrated that hantavirus transmission does not require direct contact between rodents, or between rodents and humans, and that the indirect transmission of PUUV through contaminated environment takes place among the rodents for a prolonged period of time. The results also have implications for safety recommendations for work with hantaviruses and for preventive measures.

Abstract: The present study produced new knowledge about gender differences with respect to work-to-family conflict and its longitudinal relations with indicators of satisfaction and well-being. The study examined the longitudinal relations between work-to-family conflict and self-reported satisfaction and well-being in the domains of work (job satisfaction), family (marital satisfaction, parental distress) as well as overall (psychological and physical) symptoms. Data were obtained from a random sample of Finnish men (n=208) and women (n=218) who were employed and had either a partner or/and children. A survey was conducted at two points in time, in 1999 (Time 1), and one year later, in 2000 (Time 2). The results revealed that, among women, work-to-family conflict perceived at Time 1 significantly predicted job dissatisfaction, parental distress as well as psychological symptoms at Time 2. Abstract: Metal nanoclusters whose surface ligands are removable while keeping their metal framework structures intact are an ideal system for investigating the influence of surface ligands on catalysis of metal nanoparticles. We report in this work an intermetallic nanocluster containing 62 metal atoms, Au34Ag28(PhC≡C)34, and its use as a model catalyst to explore the importance of surface ligands in promoting catalysis. As revealed by single-crystal diffraction, the 62 metal atoms in the cluster are arranged as a four-concentric-shell Ag@Au17@Ag27@Au17 structure. All phenylalkynyl (PA) ligands are linearly coordinated to the surface Au atoms with staple "PhC≡C-Au-C≡CPh" motif. Compared with reported thiolated metal nanoclusters, the surface PA ligands on Au34Ag28(PhC≡C)34 are readily removed at relatively low temperatures, while the metal core remains intact. The clusters before and after removal of surface ligands are used as catalysts for the hydrolytic oxidation of organosilanes to silanols. It is, for the first time, demonstrated that the organic-capped metal nanoclusters work as active catalysts much better than those with surface ligands partially or completely removed.

Abstract: In prior work (4) of the first two authors with Savare, a new Riemannian notion of lower bound for Ricci curvature in the class of metric measure spaces (X,d,m) was introduced, and the corresponding class of spaces denoted by RCD(K,∞). This notion relates the CD(K,N) theory of Sturm and Lott-Villani, in the case N = ∞, to the Bakry-Emery approach. In (4) the RCD(K,∞) property is defined in three equivalent ways and several properties of RCD(K,∞) spaces, including the regularization properties of the heat flow, the connections with the theory of Dirichlet forms and the stability under tensor products, are provided. In (4) only finite reference measures m have been considered. The goal of this paper is twofold: on one side we extend these results to general σ-finite spaces, on the other we remove a technical assumption appeared in (4) concerning a strengthening of the CD(K,∞) condition. This more general class of spaces includes Euclidean spaces endowed with Lebesgue measure, complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with bounded geometry and the pointed metric measure limits of manifolds with lower Ricci curvature bounds.
