TL;DR: This article examined three sources of heterogeneity that may condition the value of ties: firm ownership (foreign vs. domestic), competition, and structural uncertainty, and found that managerial ties are less effective for fostering performance when competition becomes more intense.
Abstract: While most advocate that foreign firms should utilize managerial ties to conduct business in China, recent literature cautions that such ties may offer only conditional value. This study examines three sources of heterogeneity that may condition the value of ties: firm ownership (foreign vs. domestic), competition, and structural uncertainty. Results from a survey of 280 firms in China indicate that though foreign and domestic firms utilize ties at a similar level, their performance gains from tie utilization differ. Managerial ties have a monotonic, positive effect on performance for domestic firms, whereas the effect is curvilinear (i.e., inverted U-shaped) for foreign firms. Therefore, compared with domestic firms, foreign firms have a competitive disadvantage from tie utilization. Furthermore, managerial ties are less effective for fostering performance when competition becomes more intense. However, ties lead to higher levels of firm performance when structural uncertainty increases. Overall, these results support the contingency view of managerial ties and caution companies about the unconditional use of ties as the market becomes more heterogeneous. TL;DR: Ooarthritis is viewed as an attempt to contain a mechanical problem in the joint and as failed repair of damage caused by excessive mechanical stress on the joint, and it is unlikely that a drug that inhibits a specific enzyme or cytokine in the pathways of cartilage breakdown, or further stimulates the already increased synthesis ofcartilage matrix molecules will solve the problem of OA.

TL;DR: The results suggest that M1 injury results in axonal sprouting near the ischemic injury and the establishment of novel connections within a distant target, and support the hypothesis that, after a cortical injury, such as occurs after stroke, cortical areas distant from the injury undergo major neuroanatomical reorganization.
Abstract: Previously, we showed that the ventral premotor cortex (PMv) underwent neurophysiological remodeling after injury to the primary motor cortex (M1). In the present study, we examined cortical connections of PMv after such lesions. The neuroanatomical tract tracer biotinylated dextran amine was injected into the PMv hand area at least 5 months after ischemic injury to the M1 hand area. Comparison of labeling patterns between experimental and control animals demonstrated extensive proliferation of novel PMv terminal fields and the appearance of retrogradely labeled cell bodies within area 1/2 of the primary somatosensory cortex after M1 injury. Furthermore, evidence was found for alterations in the trajectory of PMv intracortical axons near the site of the lesion. The results suggest that M1 injury results in axonal sprouting near the ischemic injury and the establishment of novel connections within a distant target. These results support the hypothesis that, after a cortical injury, such as occurs after stroke, cortical areas distant from the injury undergo major neuroanatomical reorganization. Our results reveal an extraordinary anatomical rewiring capacity in the adult CNS after injury that may potentially play a role in recovery.

TL;DR: In a 6-year longitudinal study, individual differences in hope, as measured by the hope scale (C. R. Snyder et al., 1991) scores of entering college freshmen, predicted better overall grade point averages even after controlling for variance related to entrance examination scores as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A cognitive, motivational theory is introduced to the educational research community. Hope theory integrates the conceptualization of goals, along with the strategies to achieve those goals (pathways), and the motivation to pursue those goals (agency). In a 6-year longitudinal study, individual differences in hope, as measured by the Hope Scale (C. R. Snyder et al., 1991) scores of entering college freshmen, predicted better overall grade point averages even after controlling for variance related to entrance examination scores. High- relative to the low-hope students also were more likely to have graduated and not to have been dismissed over this 6-year period. Hopeful thinking in college academics is discussed, along with the contributions of hope theory for educational research and practice. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)

TL;DR: In this discussion of the escape of the offspring of a large sessile organism from predators and parasites, Leguminosae (the bean family) and the bruchid beetles that attack their seeds are used as an empirical example.
Abstract: \"Many legumes contain poisonous principles, particularly alkaloids and glucosides, and we should expect Bruchids to be affected by some of these.\" With this statement, Bridwell (l918) anticipated the subject of this discussion: what traits of seeds may be the result of selective pressure by insects and other seed-eaters? In this discussion of the escape of the offspring of a large sessile organism from predators and parasites, Leguminosae (the bean family) and the bruchid beetles that attack their seeds are used as an empirical example. In a subsequent paper (Janzen, 1968b), a model of seed dispersal is developed as background for discussion of the relevance of seed dispersal and mortality to the density and presence of a species of plant in a community. I intend the data presented here to support the arguments advanced by Stebbins (1967) and Harper ( 1967) against the
