TL;DR: To determine whether tumors containing carcinoembryonic antigen could be detected by administration of a radiolabeled, affinity-purified, goat lgG, 18 patients with a history of cancer of diverse histopathology received an average total dose of 1.0 mCi of 131l-labeled lGG.
Abstract: To determine whether tumors containing carcinoembryonic antigen could be detected by administration of a Radio-labeled, affinity-purified, goat IgG having 70 per cent immunoreactivity against carcinoembryonic antigen, 18 patients with a history of cancer of diverse histopathology received an average total dose of 1.0 mCi of 131l-labeled IgG. Total-body photoscans were performed with a gamma scintillation camera at various intervals after administration of the radioactive antibody. Ordinary photoscans proved difficult to interpret because of blood-pool background radioactivity, thus necessitating the computer subtraction of radioactive blood-pool agents from the antibody's 131I activity. Tumor location could be demonstrated at 48 hours after injection in almost all cases studied. The scans were negative in patients without demonstrable tumors or with tumors apparently devoid of carcinoembryonic antigen. Circulating antigen levels of up to 350 ng per milliliter did not prevent successful tumor imag...

Abstract: An algorithm is presented for computing the eigensystem of the rank-one modification of a symmetric matrix with known eigensystem. The explicit computation of the updated eigenvectors and the treatment of multiple eigenvalues are discussed. The sensitivity of the computed eigenvectors to errors in the updated eigenvalues is shown by a perturbation analysis.

TL;DR: The relationship of the equity concept and behavioral models is discussed, and frameworks for future research are presented in this article, where a review of primary areas in which the concept of equitable treatment has centered, notes findings, and discusses significant theoretical/methodological issues.
Abstract: Organizational theorists have advanced models of individuals' determination of equitable payment for work. Current demands by minority and women's groups stress equitable treatment by formal organizations. This article reviews primary areas in which the concept of equitable treatment has centered, notes findings, and discusses significant theoretical/methodological issues. The relationship of the equity concept and behavioral models is discussed, and frameworks for future research are presented.

TL;DR: It is proposed that immunocytochemical staining of CEA in conventional tumor pathology sections can be used to discriminate those cases in which blood CEA titers need to be determined on a serial basis in order to monitor recurrence or progression, since a positive immunoperoxidase reaction forCEA in the primary tumor predicts well in many cases which patients will have aBlood CEA value reflecting disease activity.
Abstract: The 3-step, unlabeled antibody, immunoperoxidase method for staining CEA in conventional histopathology sections was used to evaluate the presence of CEA in 950 different specimens, the vast majority of which were available as paraffin-embedded tissues fixed in formalin. The sensitivity of the method clearly discriminated between normal or nonmalignant, diseased tissues and neoplasms having increased quantities of CEA. Thus, tumors of epithelial origin, particularly adenocarcinomas or squamous cell carcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract, bronchus, ovary, and cervix, were frequently prone to CEA staining. Among ovarian tumors, there appeared to be a distinct proclivity of CEA staining in mucinous as compared to serous cystadenocarcinomas. The only normal tissues showing CEA were colonic mucosae adjacent or near to benign or malignant tumors, suggesting CEA absorption from the neoplasm and not primarily de novo CEA biosynthesis. With the exception of inflammatory conditions of the colon, nonmalignant, diseased tissues did not have CEA demonstrable by this method. It is proposed that immunocytochemical staining of CEA in conventional tumor pathology sections can be used to discriminate those cases in which blood CEA titers need to be determined on a serial basis in order to monitor recurrence or progression, since a positive immunoperoxidase reaction for CEA in the primary tumor predicts well in many cases which patients will have a blood CEA value reflecting disease activity. Furthermore, the excellent correlation found for CEA staining between primary and metastatic tumors of the same cases suggests that the immunocytochemical method could have diagnostic potential for detecting micrometastatic spread of CEA-positive cancers to regional lymph nodes, thus aiding in the screening of regional lymph nodes of cancer patients.

TL;DR: Surgical specimens from 100 patients with stage I B cervical cancer undergoing radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy were reviewed with respect to vascular invasion and lymphoplasmacytic infiltration.
Abstract: Surgical specimens from 100 patients with stage I B cervical cancer undergoing radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy were reviewed with respect to vascular invasion and lymphoplasmacytic infiltration. Lymph nodes from these patients were classified morphologically according to the criteria proposed by Cottier. Vascular invasion was associated with a significant increase in nodal metastases and tumor recurrence particularly to extrapelvic sites. A marked lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate around tumor cells was associated with decreased nodal metastases and tumor recurrence. There was no significant relationship between the degree of lymphoplasmacytic infiltration of the primary tumor and regional lymph node morphology.

TL;DR: When all birds were transferred to a new task involving colors, nonshifted birds performed significantly better than shifted birds (transferred from matching to oddity, or oddity to matching), but only if they had experienced negative instances of the training concept.
Abstract: Pigeons were trained on a matching-to-sample or oddity-from-sample task with shapes (circle and plus). Half of each group was exposed to "negative instance" trials i.e., for matching birds, neither comparison key matched the sample, and for oddity birds both comparison keys matched the sample. When all birds were transferred to a new task involving colors (red and green), nonshifted birds (transferred from matching to matching, or oddity to oddity) performed significantly better than shifted birds (transferred from matching to oddity, or oddity to matching), but only if they had experienced negative instances of the training concept. When all birds were exposed to negative instances of the transfer task and then transferred to a new color task (yellow and blue), dramatic transfer effects were observed. The effect of pre-exposure to the yellow and blue colors, in order to reduce transfer-stimulus novelty, had a minor effect on transfer.

Abstract: The resonant-column method, a relatively nondestructive test employing wave propagation in cylindrical specimens, is used to obtain modulus and damping of soils as functions of vibratory strain amplitude and other factorssuch as ambient confining stress and void ratio. Descriptions of the apparatus, calibration procedures, testing procedures, and aids for data reduction are given for apparatus which propagate either rod compression waves or shear waves or both. Data reduction aids include graphs for a wide range of apparatus conditions and include a computer program that covers all admissable boundary conditions.

TL;DR: An interactive multiple-objective linear programming approach, which does not require criterion weights of any kind, was developed in response to the needs of the multiple-use forest management problem.
Abstract: In many situations it is under legislative mandate to manage publicly owned forest resources for multiple uses e.g., timber production, hunting, grazing. The major obstacle that has been encountered in applying previously developed mathematical programming procedures to multiple-use forest management has been the difficulty in assessing the appropriate criterion weights required. To avoid the criterion weight estimation problem, an interactive multiple-objective linear programming approach, which does not require criterion weights of any kind, was developed in response to the needs of the multiple-use forest management problem. The procedure uses a combination of linear programming and vector-maximum techniques. At each iteration the cone generated by the gradients of the multiple objectives is contracted. On the last two iterations the most acceptable efficient extreme point is identified with the aid of a filtering device. As illustrated, the method has been applied to prepare preliminary management plans for a 10,000-acre sub-unit of a national forest.

TL;DR: It is concluded that isoproterenol is not uniformly effective in all patients, but that it is a useful therapeutic agent in patients who respond, and neither hypoxia, histamine nor prostaglandin plays a role in the etiology of primary pulmonary hypertension.
Abstract: The effects of various pharmacologic agents on pulmonary arterial pressure and vascular resistance were studied in six patients considered to have primary pulmonary hypertension at the time of cardiac catheterization. Vascular resistance increased slightly after the administration of hypoxic air in two patients; it decreased after the administration of 100 percent oxygen in one patient. After the intravenous administration of diphenhydramine and sodium salicylate, drugs that block the actions of the powerful pulmonary vasoconstrictors histamine and prostaglandin (F α 2 ), vascular resistance did not change in two patients. After the intravenous administration of hydrocortisone, vascular resistance decreased significantly in one patient but only slightly in four others. Vascular resistance did not change significantly after the administration of the immunosuppressive agents prednisone and azathioprine in three patients. These results suggest that neither hypoxia, histamine nor prostaglandin plays a role in the etiology of primary pulmonary hypertension. The possible role of an immune mechanism needs further investigation. Vascular resistance decreased after the acute intravenous administration of the potent pulmonary vasodilator isoproterenol (0.5 to 2 μg/min) in five of the six patients. Both pulmonary pressure and resistance decreased in two patients and there was no change in pressure in one patient after the “subacute” administration of isoproterenol (0.5 to 1 μg/min) for 5 to 12 days. In all patients both values returned to control level when isoproterenol was discontinued. The sublingual administration of isoproterenol (15 mg) significantly decreased vascular resistance in one patient but not in the other three patients studied. The one patient who responded has been receiving maintenance doses of isoproterenol for 30 months. We conclude that isoproterenol is not uniformly effective in all patients, but that it is a useful therapeutic agent in patients who respond.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors highlight the applicability of the abstract considerations to several concrete problems, explain what useful information semigroup theory provides and what it does not, and demonstrate how in certain cases, various partial differential equations techniques can be used to extend the theoretical understanding.
Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter highlights the facts about nonlinear semigroups in arbitrary Banach spaces and an exposition of some applications and extensions of this general theory to certain nonlinear partial differential equations of parabolic type. The chapter focuses on the applicability of the abstract considerations to several concrete problems, to explain what useful information semigroup theory provides and what it does not, and to demonstrate how in certain cases, various partial differential equations techniques can be used to extend the theoretical understanding. The chapter presents the basic working information about nonlinear semigroups, including Crandall–Liggett generation theorem and various regularity and perturbation results. It also presents the nonlinear Chernoff theorem and several related topics, with a view toward the applications. These are the porous medium and related equations, certain variational and quasi-variational inequalities of evolution, and Bellman's equation.

Abstract: An efficient computation method is developed for solving the microstrip-type structures in which a number of conducting strips are located on several interfaces of dielectric layers. The method is applied to the coupled suspended microstripline with tuning septums on the underside of the suspending dielectric layer. The numerical solutions obtained by the new method are compared with available data. The method is believed useful in the design of tightly coupled structures such as the 3-dB hybrid as well as of transitions between different transmission lines for microwave and millimeter-wave integrated circuit application.

Abstract: Theophrastus of Eresos (c. 370-288/85 B.C.) was the outstanding student of Aristotle, and is famed in the history of Western literature for his lampooning Characters, as well as numerous treatises on botany, petrology, and other subjects in natural history.' Best known is the Historia Plantarum, which formed the base for all succeeding studies of plant lore and classification until the Linnaean system.2 Taking Aristotle's methodologies, illustrated in the Historia Animalium, De Partibus Animalium, and other zoological works, Theophrastus produced a botanical guide that displayed the best in the Peripatetic approaches to the world of nature. There is some controversy over the authenticity of Historia Plantarum, IX, in which herbs and herbals appear. It is argued that there may be some genuine "Theophrastean" matter in Book IX, but that an unknown rhizotomos ("root-cutter") was the author.3 In a recent survey of herbal documents, Stannard remains uncertain about Book IX, and his conclusion that "Book IX of Theophrastus' History of Plants . . . is possibly spurious"'4 is typical of most essays touching on the subject. The problem is centered on the topics in Book IX, which seem at variance with the remainder of the treatise, but Einarson has shown that the best witnesses in the MS tradition do include Book IX.5 Further-

Abstract: Formulas are obtained for the terminal voltages of a transmission line consisting of three conductors immersed in a homogeneous medium. No simultaneous equations need be solved and the result does not require that the line be electrically short. Typical applications are lines composed of three wires, two wires above a ground plane, and two wires within a cylindrical shield. Certain interesting properties of the solution are also obtained.
