TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated 10 years of continuous non-tilled and conventionally tilled corn (Zea mays L.) production on a Maury silt loam (Typic Paleudalfs) soil, which had been in bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) for 50 years.
Abstract: Soil properties were evaluated after 10 years of continuous non-tilled and conventionally tilled corn (Zea mays L.) production on a Maury silt loam (Typic Paleudalfs) soil, which had been in bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) for 50 years. On limed and nonlimed plots soil samples from 0, 84, 168 and 336 kg/ha N treatments were taken in the 0–5, 5–15 and 15–30 cm layers for determination of organic C and N, soil pH, and exchangeable Al, Mn, Ca, Mg, K. Tillage treatments had no effect on soil bulk density in the 0–15 cm layer. In the 0–5 cm surface layer, organic C and N were approximately twice as high with no-tillage as with conventional tillage; N fertilizer induced a high level of both organic C and organic N. No-tillage decreased soil pH for unlimed plots as compared to conventional tillage, especially at high N-rates, which produced an increase in exchangeable Al and Mn and a decrease in exchangeable Ca down to the 30 cm depth. When lime was applied, the pH of the surface soil was slightly higher under no-tillage. On treatments receiving lime, exchangeable Al and Mn levels were very low with no significant difference in tillage systems. At low rates of N fertilization the 10-year average corn yield was higher for conventional tillage than for no-tillage, but at high rates of N fertilization it was equal or higher for no-tillage treatments receiving lime. Unlimed no-tillage treatments produced lower yields at all N levels during 1975–1979. Deterioration of soil physical properties was not observed.

TL;DR: Correlations between terminal nerve projections and neurobehavioral studies suggest that the terminal nerve mediates responses to sex pheromones.
Abstract: Ganglion cells of the terminal nerve in goldfish are located in the olfactory nerve and bulb and send peripheral processes into the olfactory epithelium and central processes to the supracommissural nuclei of the telencephalon as well as to the retina. Correlations between terminal nerve projections and neurobehavioral studies suggest that the terminal nerve mediates responses to sex pheromones.

TL;DR: Evaluating the kinetics and bioavailability of nifedipine in 12 normal subjects after single intravenous and oral doses found profiles consistent with fast and slow absorption, with marked variability in the rate of appearance of the drug in plasma.
Abstract: Nifedipine kinetics have not been described in clinically relevant detail because of difficulties in formulating a stable preparation for intravenous use and lack of a specific and sensitive assay for plasma nifedipine. We recently developed a gas-chromatographic method and determined conditions in which nifedipine could be protected from photodegradation. Therefore, we evaluated the kinetics and bioavailability of nifedipine in 12 normal subjects after single intravenous (1 mg/5 min) and oral (10 mg) doses. After intravenous dosing, the drug was eliminated with a half-time of 1.77 +/- 0.25 hour, and total clearance was calculated at 0.62 +/- 0.09 liter/kg/hr. With oral drug administration, the elimination half-time was twice as long for the group; but within these subjects, marked variability in the rate of appearance of the drug in plasma was observed, giving profiles consistent with fast and slow absorption. In the latter group, peak plasma drug concentrations were only one third the level seen in those exhibiting a faster absorption profile, although the extent of drug absorption (as derived from areas under the plasma level-time curves) did not vary. Bioavailability was 0.45 +/- 0.08. Untoward effects resulting from the drug's pharmaco-subjects after intravenous administration (flushing).

TL;DR: After adjustments were made for pretest strength results, a one-way analysis of covariance indicated that the posttest isometric strength scores of the three experimental groups differed significantly from those of the control group, and no other posttest differences were found among any of the other training modes.
Abstract: The effects of electrical stimulation and its comparison with various resistance training modes were investigated in 34 subjects who trained their dominant leg isometrically three times a week for five weeks. Group E (n = 8) used maximum voluntary isometric contractions only, Group S (n = 8) received only electrical stimulation, and Group ES (n = 9) trained using a concurrent combination of isometric exercise and electrical stimulation. In addition, Group C (n = 9), a control group, did no experimental training. The expected gain in torque was shown in the isometric strength scores of the three experimental groups; however, there was little change in the isometric strength of the control group and in the isokinetic (100, 200, and 300 degrees/sec) results of any of the four groups. After adjustments were made for pretest strength results, a one-way analysis of covariance indicated that the posttest isometric strength scores of the three experimental groups differed significantly from those of the control group. No other posttest differences were found among any of the other training modes.

TL;DR: The authors used a more comprehensive theory of perception to specify a series of lagged recursive equations and estimate the parameters using the CPS 1974-76 panel data, and found no support for the persuasion hypothesis, and only limited evidence of projection.
Abstract: The study of political perception has been dominated by research on the perception of candidates' issue positions, focusing on the processes of projection and persuasion This research has limited our understanding of political perception by interpreting projection and persuasion narrowly in terms of cognitive balance theory Only recently has the possible impact of candidate ambiguity on voters' perception come to be appreciated In this paper, we use a more comprehensive theory of perception to specify a series of lagged recursive equations and estimate the parameters using the CPS 1974-76 panel data Our results provide no support for the persuasion hypothesis, and only limited evidence of projection Rather, the inference of candidates' issue positions from party positions and the candidates' ideological stances are much more important factors in candidate perception

TL;DR: Replacement of the fetal calf serum with bovine serum albumin and Tween-80 increased the time of colony formation by 50% but did not affect the cloning efficiency.
Abstract: A simple technique, developed for the isolation of clones derived from single, promastigote cells of Leishmania donovani and Leishmania tropica, involved the use of semisolid agar. Both species of Leishmania promastigotes formed discrete colonies at high efficiency either in semidefined medium containing 10% fetal calf serum or in completely-defined medium lacking serum. Visible colonies appeared between 8 and 14 days in growth medium containing 10% fetal calf serum. Replacement of the fetal calf serum with bovine serum albumin and Tween-80 increased the time of colony formation by 50% but did not affect the cloning efficiency. Viability of colonies transferred from semisolid agar to liquid suspension culture was 100%.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed models for predicting the radiant heat flux in lightweight fibrous insulations (LWFI), where the radiative transport process is modeled by the two-flux solution and the linear anisotropic scattering solution of the equation of transfer.
Abstract: The purpose of this work is to develop models for predicting the radiant heat flux in lightweight fibrous insulations (LWFI). The radiative transport process is modeled by the two-flux solution and the linear anisotropic scattering solution of the equation of transfer. The radiative properties of LWFI consistent with these solutions have been determined based on extinction of electromagnetic radiation by the fibers. Their dependence on the physical characteristics of fibrous insulations has been investigated. It has been found that the radiant heat flux can be minimized by making the mean radius of the fibers close to that which yields the maximum extinction coefficient. The results obtained in this study are useful to those concerned with the design and application of LWFI.

TL;DR: In this article, the extent of assumed sex differences in preferences for work attributes was explored utilizing data from five representative national samples, and the results indicated only minimal differences in preferred job attributes between males and females.
Abstract: The extent of assumed sex differences in preferences for work attributes is explored utilizing data from five representative national samples. The results indicated only minimal differences in preferred job attributes between males and females. Both sexes identified meaningfulness of the work as the most important job attribute, and rank ordered the other four attributes studied in the following sequence: promotion, income, security, and hours. Factors such as education, occupational prestige, age and one's commitment to continue working were more important than sex of the respondent as predictors of job attribute preferences. However, these status variables did not affect the relationship of sex and job attribute preferences. Furthermore, these factors had approximately the same relative predictive value for both males and females. Nevertheless, these statistically significant predictors explained a small proportion of the variance in job attribute preferences. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

TL;DR: The author describes a personal dissociative episode during which the right hand did not know what the left hand was doing, and this mechanism has great individual and species survival value.
Abstract: Dissociation represents the fundamental psychobiological mechanism underlying a wide variety of altered forms of consciousness, including conversion hysteria, hypnotic trance, mediumistic trance, multiple personality, fugue states, spirit possession states and highway hypnosis. This mechanism has great individual and species survival value. Under certain conditions, it serves to facilitate seven major functions: (1) the automatization of certain behaviors, (2) the efficiency and economy of effort, (3) the resolution of irreconcilable conflicts, (4) escape from the constraints of reality, (5) the isolation of catastrophic experiences, (6) the cathartic discharge of certain feelings, and (7) the enhancement of herd sense (e.g., the submersion of the individual ego for the group identity, greater suggestibility, etc.). To illustrate how all these functions operate, the author describes a personal dissociative episode during which, literally, the right hand did not know what the left hand was doing. ...

Abstract: A broad tutorial survey is given of the various topologies available for use in circuit switching systems for tightly coupled parallel/distributed computer systems. Terminology and issues of circuit switching as related to parallel/distributed processing are first discussed. Circuit switching networks are then classified according to connection capability, topological geometry, and basis of development. Topological relationships of specific networks are addressed. 91 references.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system of differential equations to obtain concentration and velocity distributions for quasi-uniform particle slurry flows is presented, where the relative contributions of terms describing turbulent shear stresses, particle interactions, and mixing effects vary with the dimensions of solid particles.
Abstract: A system of differential equations to obtain concentration and velocity distributions for quasi-uniform particle slurry flows is presented. Numerical solutions for various flow conditions have been obtained using an explicit algorithm. A “supported load” concept is proposed to explain the type of interaction through contact between solid particles in neighboring layers or between particles and the pipe wall. In the analysis, the relative contributions of terms describing turbulent shear stresses, particle interactions, and mixing effects vary with the dimensions of solid particles. The approach is tested for four kinds of sand of narrow size distributions (d = .65 mm, .48 mm, .52 mm and 13 mm), flowing with water in pipelines of various diameters (between 50 and 500 mm), at concentrations below 40% by volume. The coefficients used to estimate local parametes of the two-phase model are related to particle diameter. A comparison of numerical predictions and measurements of concentrations, velocities and headlosses shows the applicability of the model and the possibility of extrapolating available experimental results.

TL;DR: This article investigated the effect of initial instruction on the processes children use to solve addition and subtraction word problems, and found that children generally used a separating strategy for all subtraction problems following instruction, and few children could coordinate their solutions with the arithmetic sentence they wrote to represent the problem.
Abstract: This study investigated the effect of initial instruction on the processes children use to solve addition and subtraction word problems. Prior to instruction and following a two-month introductory unit on addition and subtraction, 43 first-grade children were individually tested on verbal problems representing different addition and subtraction situations. Prior to instruction, the children's solution processes directly modeled the action or relationships described in the problem. Following instruction, they generally used a separating strategy for all subtraction problems. Although they could solve the problems, few children could coordinate their solutions with the arithmetic sentence they wrote to represent the problem.
