TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the extent to which offer prices reflect public information for 3,325 IPOs over the period 1990-1999, focusing primarily on four variables: share overhang, file range amendments, venture capital backing, and previous issue underpricing.
Abstract: We examine the extent to which offer prices reflect public information for 3,325 IPOs over the period 1990–1999. We focus primarily on four variables: share overhang, file range amendments, venture capital backing, and previous issue underpricing. We show that 35%–50% of the variation in IPO underpricing can be predicted using public information known before the offer date and therefore conclude that IPO offer prices underadjust to widely available public information to a much greater extent than previously documented.

TL;DR: The Need for Touch (NFT) scale as mentioned in this paper is designed to measure individual differences in preference for haptic (touch) information, and has been shown to moderate the relationship between direct experience and confidence in judgment.
Abstract: This research details the development of the “Need for Touch” (NFT) scale designed to measure individual differences in preference for haptic (touch) information. The 12-item NFT scale consists of autotelic and instrumental dimensions. Results are reported that support the scale's hypothesized internal structure as well as its reliability, convergent, discriminant, and nomological validity. Individual differences in chronic accessibility to haptic information across groups varying in NFT were also found in two experiments. Additionally, NFT moderated the relationship between direct experience and confidence in judgment.

TL;DR: The polymyxin B and colistin are recommended for serious systemic infections caused by gram-negative bacteria that are resistant to other agents and have a role in the therapy of multidrug-resistant gram- negative bacterial infections.
Abstract: BACKGROUND:Polymyxin B sulfate and colistin, also known as colistimethate, have not been used for many years because less toxic antimicrobials are available. Gram-negative bacteria that are resistant to the aminoglycosides, β-lactams, and fluoroquinolones are becoming more common. These bacteria are often susceptible to the polymyxins.OBJECTIVE:To present a review of the chemistry, antibacterial spectrum, dosing, pharmacokinetics, toxicity, and indications for polymyxin B sulfate and colistin.DATA SOURCE:A MEDLINE search (1966–1998) of the English-language literature was performed to identify primary literature on the polymyxins. Older citations (1949–1965) were identified through the bibliographies of these articles.STUDY SELECTION:All available reports of in vitro antibacterial activity, animal and clinical trials, and case reports were reviewed.DATA SYNTHESIS:The polymyxins are amphipathic molecules that interact with lipopolysaccharide in the bacterial outer membrane. They have potent antiendotoxic pr...

TL;DR: A conceptual framework is developed to illustrate that salience of haptic information differs significantly across products, consumers, and situations and implications for the effect of haaptic information for Internet and other nonstore retailing as well as for traditional retailers are discussed.
Abstract: Haptic information, or information attained through touch by the hands, is important for the evaluation of products that vary in terms of material properties related to texture, hardness, temperature, and weight. The authors develop and propose a conceptual framework to illustrate that salience of haptic information differs significantly across products, consumers, and situations. The authors use two experiments to assess how these factors interact to impair or enhance the acquisition and use of haptic information. Barriers to touch, such as a retail display case, can inhibit the use of haptic information and consequently decrease confidence in product evaluations and increase the frustration level of consumers who are more motivated to touch products. In addition, written descriptions and visual depictions of products can partially enhance acquisition of certain types of touch information. The authors synthesize the results of these studies and discuss implications for the effect of haptic infor...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors systematically review evidence bearing on the management of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), including breaking the news, multidisciplinary clinics, symptom management, cognitive and behavioral impairment, communication, and palliative care for patients with ALS.
Abstract: Objective: To systematically review evidence bearing on the management of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Methods: The authors analyzed studies from 1998 to 2007 to update the 1999 practice parameter. Topics covered in this section include breaking the news, multidisciplinary clinics, symptom management, cognitive and behavioral impairment, communication, and palliative care for patients with ALS. Results: The authors identified 2 Class I studies, 8 Class II studies, and 30 Class III studies in ALS, but many important areas have been little studied. More high-quality, controlled studies of symptomatic therapies and palliative care are needed to guide management and assess outcomes in patients with ALS. Recommendations: Multidisciplinary clinic referral should be considered for managing patients with ALS to optimize health care delivery and prolong survival (Level B) and may be considered to enhance quality of life (Level C). For the treatment of refractory sialorrhea, botulinum toxin B should be considered (Level B) and low-dose radiation therapy to the salivary glands may be considered (Level C). For treatment of pseudobulbar affect, dextromethorphan and quinidine should be considered if approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (Level B). For patients who develop fatigue while taking riluzole, withholding the drug may be considered (Level C). Because many patients with ALS demonstrate cognitive impairment, which in some cases meets criteria for dementia, screening for cognitive and behavioral impairment should be considered in patients with ALS (Level B). Other management strategies all lack strong evidence.
