Abstract: We report on the properties of pre-main-sequence objects in the Taurus molecular clouds as observed in seven mid- and far-infrared bands with the Spitzer Space Telescope. There are 215 previously identified members of the Taurus star-forming region in our ~44 deg^2 map; these members exhibit a range of Spitzer colors that we take to define young stars still surrounded by circumstellar dust (noting that ~20% of the bona fide Taurus members exhibit no detectable dust excesses). We looked for new objects in the survey field with similar Spitzer properties, aided by extensive optical, X-ray, and ultraviolet imaging, and found 148 new candidate members of Taurus. We have obtained follow-up spectroscopy for about half the candidate sample, thus far confirming 34 new members, three probable new members, and 10 possible new members, an increase of 15%–20% in Taurus members. Of the objects for which we have spectroscopy, seven are now confirmed extragalactic objects, and one is a background Be star. The remaining 93 candidate objects await additional analysis and/or data to be confirmed or rejected as Taurus members. Most of the new members are Class II M stars and are located along the same cloud filaments as the previously identified Taurus members. Among non-members with Spitzer colors similar to young, dusty stars are evolved Be stars, planetary nebulae, carbon stars, galaxies, and active galactic nuclei.

Abstract: The aim of the study was to provide evidence-based recommendations for the management of early (uncomplicated) Parkinson's disease (PD), based on a review of the literature. Uncomplicated PD refers to patients suffering from the classical motor syndrome of PD only, without treatment-induced motor complications and without neuropsychiatric or autonomic problems. MEDLINE, Cochrane Library and International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment (INAHTA) database literature searches were conducted. National guidelines were requested from all European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS) societies. Non-European guidelines were searched for using MEDLINE. Part I of the guidelines deals with prevention of disease progression, symptomatic treatment of motor features (parkinsonism), and prevention of motor and neuropsychiatric complications of therapy. For each topic, a list of therapeutic interventions is provided, including classification of evidence. Following this, recommendations for management are given, alongside ratings of efficacy. Classifications of evidence and ratings of efficacy are made according to EFNS guidance. In cases where there is insufficient scientific evidence, a consensus statement (good practice point) is made.

Abstract: Our aim was to investigate the effects of an oral supplementation of quercetin at 3 different doses on plasma concentrations of quercetin, parameters of oxidant/antioxidant status, inflammation, and metabolism. To this end, 35 healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to take 50, 100, or 150 mg/d (group Q50-Q150) quercetin for 2 wk. Fasting blood samples were collected at the beginning and end of the supplementation period. Compared with baseline, quercetin supplementation significantly increased plasma concentrations of quercetin by 178% (Q50), 359% (Q100), and 570% (Q150; P < 0.01 for all). High interindividual variation was found for plasma quercetin concentrations (36-57%). Quercetin did not affect concentrations of serum uric acid or plasma alpha- and gamma-tocopherols, oxidized LDL, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, or plasma antioxidative capacity as assessed by the ferric-reducing antioxidant potential and oxygen radical absorbance capacity assays. In addition, serum lipids and lipoproteins, body composition, and resting energy expenditure did not significantly change during quercetin supplementation. Pharmacokinetics of quercetin were investigated in a subgroup of 15 volunteers. The areas under the plasma concentration-time curves ranged from 76.1 mumol.min.L(-1) to 305.8 mumol.min.L(-1) (50- and 150-mg dosages, respectively). Median maximum plasma concentrations of quercetin (431 nmol/L) were observed 360 min after intake of 150 mg quercetin. In conclusion, daily supplementation of healthy humans with graded concentrations of quercetin for 2 wk dose-dependently increased plasma quercetin concentrations but did not affect antioxidant status, oxidized LDL, inflammation, or metabolism.

Abstract: The previous International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) trials and studies recognized three prognostic groups of renal tumors of childhood: low risk, intermediate risk, and high risk tumors, which were further defined in the SIOP (Stockholm) Working Classification of Renal Tumors of Childhood (1994). The results of the latest SIOP Trials and Studies showed that certain histological features which remain after preoperative chemotherapy, such as blastema, are of prognostic significance while others are not. Therefore, in the next SIOP Trials and Study a revised classification of renal tumors will be followed. It still recognizes the three tumor risk groups with different types in each of them, but for treatment purposes, only three major types of nephroblastoma need to be recognized: completely necrotic (low risk tumor), blastemal (high risk tumor), and others (intermediate risk tumors). Patients will be treated according to tumor histology and stage. Trials which include preoperative chemotherapy have shown that the presence of necrotic tumor or chemotherapy induced changes in the renal sinus or perirenal fat can be ignored for distinguishing between stage I and II, but if present at resection margins or lymph nodes, it should be regarded as stage III. Prognostic significance of all histological component of Wilms tumors will be studied prospectively in the new trial.

Abstract: Singlet fission is the spin-allowed conversion of a spin-singlet exciton into a pair of spin-triplet excitons residing on neighbouring molecules. To rationalize this phenomenon, a multiexcitonic spin-zero triplet-pair state has been hypothesized as an intermediate in singlet fission. However, the nature of the intermediate states and the underlying mechanism of ultrafast fission have not been elucidated experimentally. Here, we study a series of pentacene derivatives using ultrafast two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy and unravel the origin of the states involved in fission. Our data reveal the crucial role of vibrational degrees of freedom coupled to electronic excitations that facilitate the mixing of multiexcitonic states with singlet excitons. The resulting manifold of vibronic states drives sub-100 fs fission with unity efficiency. Our results provide a framework for understanding singlet fission and show how the formation of vibronic manifolds with a high density of states facilitates fast and efficient electronic processes in molecular systems.
