Abstract: The intricate relationship between reindeer (Rangifer t. tarandus L.) and humans in the boreal, subarctic and arctic regions has attracted the keen attention of modern sciences since the early 20th century. Since the 1950s, various scientific traditions have shaped the emergence of separate foci dealing with the natural conditions of the animal and its environment on the one hand and the cultural and socioeconomic dimensions of human–reindeer relations on the other. This divergence of biological and anthropological interpretations of the circumstances of reindeer herding in specific ecosystems and cultural settings has also had an impact on management policies and practices. The measures had tended to rely mainly on results of research conducted by natural scientists. Such studies had focused mainly on natural status of pastures and reindeer, losses to predators, carrying capacity, “overgrazing”, and meat production. This type of research had to a large degree neglected the human element in the equation among people, livelihood, animals, and the socioeconomic and cultural significance. Until recently, little emphasis had been given to the intricate knowledge that the practitioners closest to the reindeer have of the animal, the environment, and the ensuing utilization by humans (Aikio 1978). At the beginning of the 21st century, in the circumpolar North, Rangifer populations and their users, herders, and hunters alike are under extensive sociopolitical and economic pressures that have altered and will continue to alter their relationship with reindeer and their own position within northern nation states and their economies (Chap. 2; Forbes and Kofinas 2000; Anderson and Nuttall 2004). Abstract: In today's world, there are increasingly many things to remember. Often the information is linked to physical world objects -- for instance usage instructions, personal histories, access codes or expiring guarantee dates. Mobile augmented reality (MAR) can provide a design approach, where we can utilize our everyday surroundings and attach information to the items without seemingly modifying their outlook. In this paper, we explore selected MAR scenarios from the augmented human memory point of view. We evaluated these scenarios in a online survey with 19 participants.

Abstract: We present the initial prototype of a running shoe with integrated electrochromic (EC) information displays. The flexibility of the displays and the possibility to create displays in any shape make the technology particularly suited for seamless integration in running shoes, supporting the shoe's overall design aesthetic. Our prototype implementation includes a segmented display in the toe-box area of the shoe, suitable for display of goal achievement and a side display, showing the wear-and-tear state of the shoe. The EC displays are driven by an Arduino microcontroller, battery and sensors, embedded in the sole. As next steps, the shoe will be evaluated in trials with experienced runners.

Abstract: This case study examined how the agency of a fifth-grade pupil appeared across different learning environments in the primary school context. In this study, agency is defined as the initiatives taken by an individual in interactive situations. The research question is: how does a pupil’s agency manifest and vary through taking initiatives across different learning environments within curriculum-based education? The empirical data consist of 50 video episodes including learning activities in a classroom, in a vegetable garden and on a nearby farm. The findings show that the pupil’s agency varied across learning environments, manifesting itself through complementing, supportive, constructive and challenging initiatives. When developing pedagogy that supports learning across formal and informal learning environments, it is essential to enable pupils to take different kinds of initiatives and to exercise their agency in versatile contexts.

Abstract: Philosophical analysis concerning selfhood and care is of fundamental importance for child care and education. Martin Heidegger's analytic of Dasein introduces the concepts of self and care within the ontological domain while structuring the holistic understanding of human existence. Because of the ontological emphasis, Heidegger's concepts of self and care have mainly been overridden in relation to the more or less practical questions of child care and education. This article studies Heidegger's analytic of Dasein and its implications for the philosophy of child care and education. The interconnection between the phenomena of care and selfhood and the question of how to pay attention to a child's selfhood are studied in this article. As the outcome of the study, it is proposed that the analytic of Dasein, especially its ideas about selfhood and authentic care, could offer an advantageous ontological perspective for an elaboration of the theory of relational selfhood and reciprocal care.
