04 Jun 2016TL;DR: A display created by the shadows cast by a candle, which is placed on motorized candle stand, when the user receives a text message containing an emoticon, the candle stand rotates so that a corresponding shadow image is produced.
Abstract: Candles are widely used in the home environment to create an intimate atmosphere, and they are often lit when thinking of a loved one. We took this as inspiration to create a natural candle based display for emotional communication. We demonstrate a display created by the shadows cast by a candle, which is placed on motorized candle stand. When the user receives a text message containing an emoticon, the candle stand rotates so that a corresponding shadow image is produced. The demonstration utilizes an Android based app which connects via Bluetooth to the candle stand, and employs a vocabulary of four emoticons and a question mark.

02 May 2019TL;DR: This study conducts a study to assess the errors occurring when entering values with horizontal and vertical sliders as well as two common visual styles and identifies systematic offsets that depend on the visual style and the target value.
Abstract: Sliders are one of the most fundamental components used in touchscreen user interfaces (UIs). When entering data using a slider, errors occur due e.g. to visual perception, resulting in inputs not matching what is intended by the user. However, it is unclear if the errors occur uniformly across the full range of the slider or if there are systematic offsets. We conducted a study to assess the errors occurring when entering values with horizontal and vertical sliders as well as two common visual styles. Our results reveal significant effects of slider orientation and style on the precision of the entered values. Furthermore, we identify systematic offsets that depend on the visual style and the target value. As the errors are partially systematic, they can be compensated to improve users' precision. Our findings provide UI designers with data to optimize user experiences in the wide variety of application areas where slider based touchscreen input is used.

TL;DR: In this paper, the social interaction and play of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ways an adult can support them were studied in organized and free play situations and documented with video and written notes.
Abstract: The aim of this research was to study the social interaction and play of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ways an adult can support them. Eleven groups of Finnish children with ASD (N = 45) were observed in organized and free play situations and documented with video and written notes. The focus asks: How do autistic children play? Attention is paid to the potential communication and resources of children with ASD, and thus the purpose is to contribute to the discussion about the positive aspects of ASD. Even though ASD is seen as a qualitative impairment of social interaction and communication with repetitive behavior and restrictive interests, children with ASD are able to establish interaction and simple play with other children with ASD. It is essential to create and assess practical methods and curriculum to educate children with ASD in their social abilities.
