Abstract: The legacy of mega sporting events can be perceived in several ways. It can be seenas positive or negative, tangible or intangible, territorial or personal, intentional orunintentional, global or local, short- or long-term, sport- or non sport-related, and canalso be seen from the various event stakeholders’ perspectives. In fact, it is muchmore appropriate to talk about legacies in the plural than simply legacy. This papergives a broad overview of an often used but rarely defined concept, using examplesfrom the legacies of the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, arguably two of themost important mega sporting events. It concludes that legacy essentially is a dreamto be pursued rather than a certainty to be achieved.

Abstract: Diabetes was induced in rats with various single i.v. doses of streptozotocin. The rats were killed 4–10 months thereafter. Marked hyperglycaemia, ketonaemia and a rise of plasma free fatty acids resulted. The weight increase was markedly reduced. There was a clear reciprocal correlation between the injected dose of the diabetogenic agent and plasma IRI. The same was true for the B-cell counts. There was a marked B-cell hypertrophy, whereas we found only slight indication for B-cell regeneration. In one animal a functioning B-cell adenoma developed and almost all the parameters tested were normalized. In the diabetic animals the A2-cells were predominant in the islets of Langerhans and their mean nuclear diameters were increased. In the duodenal mucosa no increase in the number of glucagonocytes was found. We interpret this activity of the glucagonocytes as a consequence of permanent and long-lasting hyperglycaemia.

Abstract: Phenylcarbene and tropylidene interconvert in the gas-phase, as evidenced by the formation of stilbene and heptafulvalene (5) from both at 300°. Heptafulvalene itself rearranges to stilbene and anthracene above 500°. Phenylcarbene, but not tropylidene, undergoes ring contraction to fulvenallene (9) at 900°. Formation of fluorene from diphenylcarbene involves a complete ring expansion to 2-phenyltropylidene (14), and subsequent ring contraction to 2-biphenylylcarbene (15).

Abstract: Durch direkte Lichtanregung werden die drei 7-Aza-benzonorbornadiene 12a, b, c in die 3-Benzazepine 22a, b, c isomerisiert. Oberhalb −40° lassen sich die als Zwischenprodukte postulierten Azaquadricyclane 19a, b, c nicht nachweisen. Bei der sensibilisierten Anregung von 12a werden die 6-Amino-2.3-benzo-fulvene 23a, 24a bevorzugt gebildet.

Upon direct photoexcitation the three 7-azabenzonorbornadienes 12a, b, c are isomerized to the 3-benzazepines 22a, b, c. At temperatures above −40° the azaquadricyclanes 19a, b, c, postulated as intermediates, cannot be found. The sensitized reaction of 12a yields the 6-aminobenzofulvenes 23a and 24a preferentially.

Abstract: Several isopropylidene-, benzylidene- and benzhydrylidene-norbornadiene derivatives (11, 16) have been synthesized. The [2π+2π] cycloadditions leading to the tetracyclic isomers 12 and 17 resp. upon direct photoexcitation proceed practically quantitatively in the case of the trienes 11, much less specifically, however, with 16. Sensitization by acetone or fluorenone allows the isolation of the quadricyclanes 17 in 20–90% yields.

Abstract: The silver nitrate technique developed by Grimelius was slightly modified in order to obtain a reproducible and simple method for the staining of C cells in the thyroid gland. The reliability of this method was demonstrated by comparing its results with those of immunofluorescent, cytochemical and ultrastructural studies. This staining procedure gives good and permanent results even when applied to tissues first fixed several hours after death. Its use allows the routine evaluation of the number and distribution of C cells in human and animal tissues.

Abstract: In Lens root tips, a direct proportionality between RNA and auxin levels and inverse proportionality between RNA content and RNase activity were found. IAA treatment of the Lens seedlings causes, in the root, both an increase of RNA and auxin content and a decrease of RNase activity. Addition of IAA to the excised roots produces an inhibition of both the decrease of the RNA levels and an inhibition of the increase of the RNase activity. The action of IAA on growth, related to the control of the RNA metabolism is discussed.

Abstract: The stereochemistry of the hydrogenolysis of benzyl-N bonds was studied using S(+)-2-dimethylamino-2-phenyl-propionic acid (I) and its derivatives, and R(−)-2-anilino-2-phenyl-propionic acid (II). The configuration of I was confirmed, that of II established by ORD. measurements, after transformation of the phenyl into cyclohexyl groups. On a palladium catalyst the hydrogenolysis of I, its methyl and ethyl esters and its amide proceeded with 72 to 99% inversion of configuration, that of II with at least 66% inversion. The ester of the quaternary ammonium derivative of I gave as much inversion as retention (= racemisation).

Abstract: The stability constants of maleates, methylsuccinates and malates of rare earths have been determined at 25.0 °C and at ionic strength 0,100 (NaClO4) by a potentiometric method. Each ligand forms 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 complexes in aqueous solution, the malates being the most stable. The first and the second dissociation constants of the ligand acids were also measured. The 1 : 2 maleates of La, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu have been isolated.

Abstract: To the 237 pigmy-mice studies in his previous papers, the author brings new data concerning the cytogenetics of 25 Leggada. One first set of 12 mice from Nigeria belongs to the same polymorphic series containing themusculoides from the Ivory Coast and the Central African Republic. A small sample from Ippy (Central African Republic), although the individuals are morphologically all alike and referable tomusculoides, shows an amazing diversity: ♂/259.2N=28, N.F.=36, sex chromosomes of the translocated type (TR). We meet here a new robertsonian combination in the polymorphic series, 34/33/32/31 ... 28/... 22/... 19/18. ♀/260.2N=32, N.F.=36, sex chromosomesTR. Both big biarmed autosomes are metacentric — submetacentric with a centromeric index of about 0.25 by the typicalmusculoides having the same diploid number. ♂/261.2N=19, N.F.=36, sex chromosomesX/Y

Abstract: Primary diazoketones, RCOCHN2, are O-protonated in HFSbF5SO2 or FSO3HSbF5SO2 at −60°, as observed by NMR. The OH-proton resonates at 9.3–9.6 δ and is coupled with HC 1 (J = 1–2.5 Hz). Secondary diazoketones, RCOC(N2)R, when protonated, give an OH-singlet at 8.85 δ. The assignments are corroborated by use of deuterated diazoketones, RCOCDN2, or deuterated acid, FSO3D. Primary diazoketones react with FSO3H at −60° to −15°, giving products assigned the fluorosulfate structure, RCOCH2OSO2F; they do not exchange HC 1 with solvent before or during decomposition. Intermediate C-protonated diazonium ions and α-oxo-carbonium ions (vinyl carbonium ions) have not been identified. 3-Diazo-4-methyl-2-pentanone (VIII) reacts with FSO3H at −15°, eliminating N2 and giving protonated mesityl oxide by a strictly intramolecular hydride shift.

It is suggested that a special cytokinetic behaviour appears earlier than morphological argentaffin differentiation.

Abstract: Hautbiopsien von zwei Patienten mit einem klinisch voll ausgepragten, mit einer Paraproteinamie aber ohne weitere Anzeichen fur ein multiples Myelom einhergehendem Skleromyxodem Arndt-Gottron wurden in verschiedener Weise fur die elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchung verarbeitet. In der sog. Ablagerungszone, d. h. in den oberen und mittleren Anteilen des Coriums findet man eine Vermehrung der Bindegewebs- und Mastzellen. Haufiger als in normaler Haut sieht man Verdickungen des auseren Blattes der “unit-membrane” dieser Zellen. Ungewohnlich ist die enge Kontaktnahme zwischen Zellauslaufern und kollagenen Fasern. Die kollagenen Fibrillen werden einzeln, paarweise oder zu kleinen Gruppen geordnet von der Zelle umschlossen und liegen teilweise wahrscheinlich sogar intracellular. Wir glauben, das es sich dabei um einen vermehrten Faserabbau handeln konnte. Auf das Vorliegen eines Autoaggressionsmechanismus beim Skleromyxodem Arndt-Gottron weist auch ein kurzlich mitgeteilter Erfolg unter einer immunosuppressiven Behandlung hin. In vermehrtem Mase als normal sind elektronenoptisch retikulare und vor allem elastische Fasern zu sehen. Auf eine verstarkte Elastogenese weisen auch die zahlreichen in Haufen angeordneten Tubuli hin. Die vermehrte, an sauren Mucopolysacchariden reiche Grundsubstanz konnten wir nicht nur mit der fur die Elektronenmikroskopie modifizierten Haleschen Reaktion sondern auch mit konventionellen Fixation-und Kontrastierungsmethoden dekorieren bzw. darstellen. Die Hautveranderungen beim Skleromyxodem Arndt-Gottron hangen sicher mit der Paraproteinamie zusammen, die als primarer Faktor angesehen werden darf. Vergleichende Untersuchungen bei anderen cutanen Mucinosen sind notwendig um abzuklaren, ob die hier beschriebenen Befunde fur das Skleromyxodem Arndt-Gottron spezifisch sind.

Abstract: Evidence for the occurrence of a natriuretic factor in rats, in which diuretic and natriuretic responses had been induced, either by expanding the extracellular or the blood volume, was sought in isovolemic cross-circulation experiments, in which a sizable fraction of the cardiac output was exchanged per unit time. In 8 experiments, in which the extracellular space of the donor animal was expanded by infusing isotonic saline, no diuretic or natriuretic response was observed in the recipients, though the recipients' blood underwent the same hemodilution as that of the donors. In six experiments in which the intravascular volume of the donor animal was considerably expanded by injecting heparinized blood obtained from other rats, cross-circulation did not induce any natriuresis or diuresis in the recipients. A natriuretic response was observed in one such cross-circulation experiment and was presumably due to an experimental error. The data do not lend any support to the hypothesis of a circulating natriuretic factor in isotonic saline diuresis or in diuresis after blood volume expansion.

Abstract: Dans ce travail d'approche, qui ne saurait etre exhaustif, si l'on tient compte du nombre et de la complexite des questions abordees, nous constatons que des lesions d'electrocoagulation de l'aire septale entrainent chez le Mulot sylvestre une alteration plus ou moins durable du comportement de construction du terrier, et une hyperreactivite temporaire qui disparait dans la plupart des cas en 15 a 20 jours. La prise journaliere de nourriture, la motilite et la motricite des animaux operes n'ont pas subi de modification. En revanche, en enregistrant les entrees et sorties d'une boite mise a la disposition de quelques animaux gravement perturbes dans leur comportement de construction, on constate qu'ils entrent dans ce nid artificiel et en sortent quelque cent fois en 24 heures, alors qu'avant l'operation, on n'avait enregistre qu'une dizaine d'entrees et sorties. Cette alteration du comportement suggere une desorganisation de l'activite de l'animal liee aux phenomenes connus d'inhibition deficiente, de perseveration inadequate, d'hyperreactivite. Si l'importance et la duree de l'alteration du comportement de construction peuvent etre mises en relation dans la plupart des cas avec le volume de la destruction de l'aire septale et des structures voisines, il n'en va pas de meme pour l'hyperreactivite. Il n'y a pas de correlation non plus entre l'importance de cette derniere et celle de l'alteration du comportement de construction. L'enregistrement et la quantification de l'activite spontanee de l'animal sur une longue duree, l'application au Mulot sylvestre de la technique de Nauta permettront de preciser cette desorganisation de l'activite et de determiner les structures cerebrales impliquees dans le maintien d'un comportement ≪ normal ≫.

Abstract: A sample of 6 ‘Leggada’ from N'Dele (Central African Republic) morphologically different from all these studied up to now, constitue a new species, which will be described by Dr F.Petter asMus goundae Petter. The caryological analysis reveals a new robertsonian polymorphical system. The diploid numbers are 2N=16, 17, 18 or 19, whereas theN.F. is constant and equal to 30. The 3 first pairs of autosomes, constituted by SM or MC elements are identical in the 4 types, as well as pairs V (MC) and VI (AC) morphologically constant by all individuals. The robertsonian mechanisms, from which polymorphism originates, take place at pairs IV, VII and VIII. The fourth pair, while heterozygote by 2N=19, assembling one MC and two AC elements, is homozygote and MC by 2N=18, 17 and 16; pairs VII and VIII are both constituted by two AC in the cases of 19 and 18 chromosomes; to form caryotypes with 17 and 16 chromosomes these 2 pairs will fusion: by 2N=17 the mutation is heterozygote (1 MC and 2 AC) and it becomes homozygote by 2N=16 giving birth to 2 MC. The sexual chromosomes are from TR Type (X MC andY SM). From these observations arises the problem of low chromosome numbers (16–20) which shall be discussed in a further publication.
