TL;DR: In spite of the work described in this chapter, which shows definite sound trends of progress, there are still major problem areas where much more research has to be done before more sophisticated orthotic systems would be available for patients.
Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter provides the classification, motor system, and implanted systems of functional electrical stimulation of extremities (FESE). Originally, functional electrical stimulation was intended only to provoke functional movements during activities of daily living in patients with paralyzed extremities. One of the most important problems in FESE is the reduction of torque due to fatigue. Some recent work can be found in Peckham, but much more work has to be done before any final conclusion regarding the mechanism of fatigue and optimum stimulation current could be made. The most widely used device applying FESE is the electronic peroneal brace. For upper extremities, Gracanin and Marincek described a Functional Electronic Radial Brace for patients who lost voluntary control of extension of the wrist and fingers. In spite of the work described in this chapter, which shows definite sound trends of progress, there are still major problem areas where much more research has to be done before more sophisticated orthotic systems would be available for patients.

TL;DR: In this paper, the diagrammatic expansion in the real-time domain of the one-electron and electron-hole propagators for the small-polaron problem is presented.
Abstract: The diagrammatic expansion in the real-time domain of the one-electron and electron-hole propagators for the small-polaron problem is presented. For this purpose, special graphs consisting of fermion lines, multiphonon interaction lines, and migration vertices are used. The spectral function of the small-polaron propagator is calculated for two cases. First, the interaction with a narrow band of optical modes, and second, the interaction with longitudinal acoustic modes, is considered. The expressions for the small-polaron mobility in the hopping region are also derived for both models.

TL;DR: In this paper, phase equilibria of ternary sulphides, CaUS2, SrUS2 and BaUS2 were investigated by X-ray diffraction, metallography and electron-probe microanalysis.
Abstract: Phase equilibria in the systems USCaS, USSrS and USBaS have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, metallography and electron-probe microanalysis. New ternary sulphides, CaUS2, SrUS2 and BaUS2, which appeared in the corresponding systems, formed eutectic mixtures with primary solid solutions. Eutectic melting temperatures were determined for the systems USCaS and USSrS and tentative phase diagrams constructed. Detailed crystal structure analyses of CaUS2 and SrUS2 were carried out.

TL;DR: It has been found that the intrinsic viscosity depends on molecular weight exactly as predicted for randomly coiled linear polymer chains, and it can be assumed that protein polypeptide chains, in the solvent medium used, exist as random coils.

TL;DR: It was observed that the electronic peroneal brace which is applied to hemiplegics with drop-foot, produces in some patients long-term effects which outlast the actual stimulation time.
Abstract: One of the most recent orthotic and therapeutical approaches to hemiplegia is functional electrical stimulation. It was observed that the electronic peroneal brace which is applied to hemiplegics with drop-foot, produces in some patients long-term effects which outlast the actual stimulation time. The paper proposes two models which explain the clinical observations and suggests further experiments in order to obtain more realistic models.

TL;DR: In this article, a nonlinear ionization wave equation is derived including a non-linear form of the ionization rate, instead of a corresponding linear term, in the equation of Pekarek and Kreici.
Abstract: A nonlinear ionization wave equation is derived including a nonlinear form of the ionization rate, instead of a corresponding linear term, in the equation of Pekarek and Kreici. The nonlinear response of an unstable positive column to a weak pulse disturbance is then numerically calculated in order to study the transition from the linear to the nonlinear wave of stratification. The solutions obtained reproduce some well known features of nonlinear ionization waves.

TL;DR: In this article, the normal coordinate analysis was used for band assignment in the infrared spectra of HNCO and HNCS, with the frequency assignment due to Ashby and Werner1 and Durig and Wertz2.
Abstract: The infrared spectra of HNCO and HNCS are quite complicated and the band assignments are still disputed. In this note we try to add some arguments based on the normal coordinate analysis in favour of the recently proposed assignments1,2. The analysis was performed by the standard GF method with the frequency assignment due to Ashby and Werner1 for HNCO, and Durig and Wertz for HNCS2. The frequencies only were used in the iteration procedure and the results are given in the Table.
