TL;DR: The application of a general-purpose integer-programming computer program to the design of optimal finite wordlength FIR digital filters is described and an analysis of the approach based on the results of more than 50 design cases is presented.
Abstract: The application of a general-purpose integer-programming computer program to the design of optimal finite wordlength FIR digital filters is described. Examples of two optimal low-pass FIR finite wordlength filters are given and the results are compared with the results obtained by rounding the infinite wordlength coefficients. An analysis of the approach based on the results of more than 50 design cases is presented and the problem of optimal wordlength choice is discussed.

TL;DR: The tradeoff between filter-length N and coefficient word-length b is investigated, using the product Nb as a complexity measure, for both the usual direct form and the sharpening structures of Kaiser and Hamming.
Abstract: We give a theorem which shows that there is a lower bound on the Chebyshev approximation error for linear-phase direct-form FIR digital filters, when the coefficients are constrained to be b-bit numbers. We then investigate the tradeoff between filter-length N and coefficient word-length b, using the product Nb as a complexity measure, for both the usual direct form and the sharpening structures of Kaiser and Hamming. The sharpening structures usually provide no overall gain in Nb product, but achieve a given performance with a smaller value of b.

TL;DR: It is proved that any Cartesian product G × G1(n1, d1) × G2(n2, d2) × × Gm(nm, dm) has a quadrilateral embedding, thereby establishing its genus, and thereby generalizing a result of White.
Abstract: Let G(n, d) denote a connected regular bipartite graph on 2n vertices and of degree d. It is proved that any Cartesian product G(n, d) × G1(n1, d1) × G2(n2, d2) × × Gm(nm, dm), such that max {d1, d2,…, dm} ≤ d ≤ d1 + d2 + + dm, has a quadrilateral embedding, thereby establishing its genus, and thereby generalizing a result of White. It is also proved that if G is any connected bipartite graph of maximum degree D, if Qm is the m-cube graph, and if m ≥ D then G × Qm has a quadrilateral embedding.

TL;DR: Electrically induced sensation and muscle twitches were studied in a group of 43 patients in whom epidural electrodes were percutaneously placed for the evaluation of the effect of spinal cord stimulation on modification of their impaired motor control.
Abstract: Electrically induced sensation and muscle twitches were studied in a group of 43 patients in whom epidural electrodes were percutaneously placed for the evaluation of the effect of spinal cord stimulation on modification of their unpaired motor control. Mean stimulus strength for sensory threshold was 5.25 ± 2.75 mA and the tolerance level was at the stimulus strength of 10.8 ± 4.4 mA. Muscle twitches with short latencies were recorded in limb and trunk muscles within the segments at the stimulating cathode. Exceptionally, higher stimuli elicited muscle twitches of distant segments.

TL;DR: Analysis of induction of chromosomal aberration after incubation of V79-379A cells with 10 mM metronidazole in aerobic and hypoxic conditions has shown that, in concordance with cytotoxic effect, this drug exhibits a significant clastogenic action i hypoxic, but not in oxic cells.
Abstract: The analysis of induction of chromosomal aberration after incubation of V79-379A cells with 10 mM metronidazole in aerobic and hypoxic conditions has shown that, in concordance with cytotoxic effect, this drug exhibits a significant clastogenic action in hypoxic, but not in oxic cells. The duration of the post-incubation period after incubation with drug is important for expression of chromosomal damage. It is probable that other nitroaromatic drugs showing enhanced cytotoxicity in hypoxia, which are widely used in medicine, could also belong to such specific class of mutagens.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors treat positive and negative power as two closely related poles of the same power cycle, and treat authority as a specific state of equilibrium between conditionally tolerated positive power and conditionally tolerate negative power.
Abstract: Positive power (induction), as an ability to initiate activity, and negative power (resis tance), as an ability to stop some activity, are treated in this paper as two closely related poles of the same power cycle. The paper further demonstrates how existing theoretical treatments of power phenomena have been reduced to an analysis of positive power and have consequently been unable to treat the contradictory interdependency of positive and negative power.Leadership as a power-implementing practice cannot avoid resistance. However, suc cessful leadership can provoke greater induction than resistance. Attempts to avoid resistance completely would provoke secondary effects which would lead towards the deterioration of powerless as well as powerful entities.Authority is treated in this paper as a specific state of equilibrium between conditionally tolerated positive power and conditionally tolerated negative power. Authority can, therefore, be treated as a unity of contradictions.

TL;DR: The apparent splitting of the 14N NQR spectra in the antiferroelectric phase of NaNO2 can be quantitatively accounted for by the distribution of the electric field gradients due to the incommensurability of the long range order with the underlying crystal lattice.
Abstract: The apparent splitting of the 14N NQR spectra in the antiferroelectric phase of NaNO2 and the anomalous 14N NQR lineshapes can be quantitatively accounted for by the distribution of the electric field gradients due to the incommensurability of the long range order with the underlying crystal lattice. The incommensurate modulation can be well described by the “plane wave limit” and no soliton effects are observed close to Tc.

TL;DR: Spinal cord stimulation was found to be an effective method for improving motor performance in patients with upper motor neuron disorders and a reduction of spasticity in the examined muscles of the lower limbs.
Abstract: Spinal cord stimulation was found to be an effective method for improving motor performance in patients with upper motor neuron disorders. Electromyographic analysis of segmental and suprasegmental activity was performed in 11 patients who had used spinal cord stimulation for more than 12 months. Neurophysiological analysis of electromyographic findings revealed improvement of volitional motor control and a reduction of spasticity in the examined muscles of the lower limbs in all patients.

TL;DR: In this article, the temperature dependence of the 87Rb quadrupole perturbed NMR spectra and spin-lattice relaxation rates has been measured in the high temperature paraelectric (P), the intermediate incommensurate (I) and the low temperature commensurate ferroelectric phase.
Abstract: The temperature dependence of the 87Rb quadrupole perturbed NMR spectra and spin-lattice relaxation rates has been measured in the high temperature paraelectric (P), the intermediate incommensurate (I) and the low temperature commensurate (C) ferroelectric phase. The obtained data show the presence of commensurate domains separated by broad incommensurate domain walls in the I phase. The spin-lattice relaxation rates of the 87Rb 1/2 → -1/2 transitions are dominated by the soft mode in the P phase whereas an anomalously strong, nearly temperature independent contribution dominates T−1 1 in the I phase. This contribution which disappears on going to the ferroelectric C phase seems to represent the first direct observation of a phason in an incommensurate ferroelectric.

TL;DR: In this paper, mass transfer coefficients between fluidized ion exchange resins (Dowex 2 × 8) and dilute solutions of hydrochloric acid and of benzoic were measured in the low Reynolds number range.
Abstract: Mass transfer coefficients between fluidized ion exchange resins (Dowex 2 × 8) and dilute solutions of hydrochloric acid and of benzoic were measured in the low Reynolds number range (Re < 1.0). In the case of benzoic acid, the experimental mass transfer coefficients are in agreement with the values predicted by standard correlation Sh = (0.81 ± 0.05) e−1 Re 0.5 Sc 1/3 in the range 0.1 < Re < 1, but below this value of Re the measured mass transfer coefficients are much lower. With hydrochloric acid the experimental mass transfer data are well correlated by the equation Sh = 1.1 e−1 Re Sc 1/3 in the range Re < 1. The observed decrease of the mass transfer coefficients in the low range of Reynolds numbers is most probably related to the effects which are considered in Nelson and Galloway's theory and in Rowe's modification of the same theory. The theoretical results were found useful in the interpretation of experimental data. The least squares analysis of the experimental data showed that the value of par...

TL;DR: In this paper, the ferroelastic transition is triggered by a phonon mediated ferrodistortive antiferroelectric ordering of the four OSe${O}$SeO-H(2) dipoles in the unit cell.
Abstract: The coupled pseudospin\char22{}acoustic-mode system in K${\mathrm{H}}_{3}$ ${(\mathrm{S}\mathrm{e}{\mathrm{O}}_{3})}_{2}$ has been investigated for the case of a resonant as well as for the case of a purely relaxational pseudospin mode. The ferroelastic transition is triggered by a phonon mediated ferrodistortive antiferroelectric ordering of the four H${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$SeO-H(2) \ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{} OSe${\mathrm{O}}_{2}$H two-position dipoles in the unit cell. The soft pseudospin mode of ${B}_{3g}$ symmetry is linearly coupled to the shear strain, and the renormalized elastic constant ${C}_{44}$ vanishes when the frequency of the soft pseudospin mode is still finite. The antiferroelectric dipolar ordering occurs without an enlargement of the unit cell.
