Abstract: Urban compost application in agroecosystems enhances soil fertility but can also be a source of (micro)plastics, which are not completely removed during the composting process. Knowledge of the fate of these plastics in regularly-amended soils is thus an issue for the environmental management of these soils. The aims of this study were 1) to develop a method combining soil fractionation, microscopic observation and chemical characterization to follow the fate of plastics in soils and 2) to apply this method on a long-term experimental field, where municipal solid waste composts were applied every other year during 10 years. The presence of plastics was investigated within compost and soil fractions using morphological and analytical characterization by transmission electronic microscopy (TEM-EDX) and pyrolysis coupled to gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (Py/GC/MS). Specific features of plastics allowed us to distinguish these polymers from soil organic matter even in the <200 µm soil fractions. Ti and Ba detection associated with these features, as they are initially added during the polymer production, also constituted plastic tracers within organo-mineral fractions. Plastic fragments as detected by TEM were less abundant in the fine soil fractions compared to the coarsest ones. The abundance of styrene produced upon pyrolysis, used as a molecular tracer of plastics, also decreased relative to produced toluene according to the same particle size gradient. Our results evidenced that plastics and microplastics were present in the soil that was amended for 10 years with compost, while not in the control soil. MPs were mostly observed as individualized particles, present in the coarsest fractions as well as some of the fine soil fractions, but they were little associated with the soil matrix. They mostly did not show any degradation features such as microbial lysis. We thus suggest that their evolution in soil was mainly due to fragmentation. Our methodological approach provides tools to monitor the fate of microplastics over time and specify the contribution of such contaminants in soil amended with bio-based products.

Abstract: CRYSTAL is a periodic ab initio code that uses a Gaussian-type basis set to express crystalline orbitals (i.e., Bloch functions). The use of atom-centered basis functions allows treating 3D (crystals), 2D (slabs), 1D (polymers), and 0D (molecules) systems on the same grounds. In turn, all-electron calculations are inherently permitted along with pseudopotential strategies. A variety of density functionals are implemented, including global and range-separated hybrids of various natures and, as an extreme case, Hartree–Fock (HF). The cost for HF or hybrids is only about 3–5 times higher than when using the local density approximation or the generalized gradient approximation. Symmetry is fully exploited at all steps of the calculation. Many tools are available to modify the structure as given in input and simplify the construction of complicated objects, such as slabs, nanotubes, molecules, and clusters. Many tensorial properties can be evaluated by using a single input keyword: elastic, piezoelectric, photoelastic, dielectric, first and second hyperpolarizabilities, etc. The calculation of infrared and Raman spectra is available, and the intensities are computed analytically. Automated tools are available for the generation of the relevant configurations of solid solutions and/or disordered systems. Three versions of the code exist: serial, parallel, and massive-parallel. In the second one, the most relevant matrices are duplicated on each core, whereas in the third one, the Fock matrix is distributed for diagonalization. All the relevant vectors are dynamically allocated and deallocated after use, making the code very agile. CRYSTAL can be used efficiently on high performance computing machines up to thousands of cores.

Abstract: OBJECTIVESeveral randomized trials have been focused on patients with anterior circulation stroke, whereas few data on posterior circulation stroke are available. Thus, new mechanical thrombectomy (MT) strategies, including a direct-aspiration first-pass technique (ADAPT), remain to be evaluated in basilar artery occlusion (BAO) patients. The authors here assessed the influence of reperfusion on outcome in BAO patients and examined whether ADAPT improves the reperfusion rate compared with stent retriever devices.METHODSThree comprehensive stroke centers prospectively collected individual data from BAO patients treated with MT. Baseline characteristics as well as radiographic and clinical outcomes were compared between the 2 MT strategies. The primary outcome measure was the rate of successful reperfusion, defined as a modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction (mTICI) grade of 2b-3. Favorable outcome was defined as a 90-day modified Rankin Scale score of 0-2.RESULTSAmong the 100 adult patients included in the study, 46 were treated with first-line ADAPT (median age 61 years, IQR 53-71 years; stent-retriever rescue therapy was secondarily used in 12 [26.1%]) and 54 were treated with a primary stent retriever (median age 67 years, IQR 53-78 years). There was no difference in baseline characteristics between the 2 treatment groups, except for the rate of diabetes (19.6% vs 5.7%, respectively, p = 0.035). Successful reperfusion was achieved in 79% of the overall study sample. Overall, the rate of favorable outcome was 36.8% and 90-day all-cause mortality was 44.2%. Successful reperfusion positively impacted favorable outcome (OR 4.57, 95% CI 1.24-16.87, p = 0.023). A nonsignificant trend toward a higher successful reperfusion rate (unadjusted OR 2.56, 95% CI 0.90-7.29, p = 0.071) and a significantly higher rate of complete reperfusion (mTICI grade 3; unadjusted OR 2.59, 95% CI 1.14-5.86, p = 0.021) was found in the ADAPT group. The procedure duration was also significantly lower in the ADAPT group (median 45 minutes, IQR 34 to 62 minutes vs 56 minutes, IQR 40 to 90 minutes; p = 0.05), as was the rate of periprocedural complications (4.3% vs 25.9%, p = 0.003). Symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (0.0% vs 4.0%, p = 0.51) and 90-day all-cause mortality (46.7% vs 42.0%, p = 0.65) were similar in the 2 groups.CONCLUSIONSAmong BAO patients, successful reperfusion is a strong predictor of a 90-day favorable outcome, and the choice of ADAPT as the first-line strategy achieves a significantly higher rate of complete reperfusion with a shorter procedure duration.
