Abstract: To make reliable interpretations about evolutionary relationships between Trypanosoma rangeli lineages and their insect vectors (triatomine bugs of the genus Rhodnius) and, thus, about the determinant factors of lineage segregation within T. rangeli, we compared phylogenies of parasite isolates and vector species. Sixty-one T. rangeli isolates from invertebrate and vertebrate hosts were initially evaluated in terms of polymorphism of the spliced-leader gene (SL). Further analysis based on SL and SSUrRNA sequences from 33 selected isolates, representative of the overall phylogenetic diversity and geographical range of T. rangeli, supported four phylogenetic lineages within this species. By comparing the phylogeny of Rhodnius species with that inferred for T. rangeli isolates and through analysis of the geographical range of the isolates, we showed that there is a very significant overlap in the distribution of Rhodnius species and T. rangeli lineages. Congruence between phylogeographical analysis of both T. rangeli lineages and complexes of Rhodnius species are consistent with the hypothesis of a long coexistence of parasites and their vectors, with lineage divergence associated with sympatric species of Rhodnius apparently without association with particular vertebrate hosts. Separation of T. rangeli isolates from vectors of distinct complexes living in sympatry favours the absence of gene flow between the lineages and suggests evolution of T. rangeli lineages in independent transmission cycles, probably associated to specific Rhodnius spp. ecotopes. A polymerase chain reaction assay based on SL intergenic sequences was developed for simultaneous identification and lineage genotyping of T. rangeli in epidemiological surveys.

Abstract: A search is presented for the associated production of a Higgs boson with a top quark pair in the all-jet final state. Events containing seven or more jets are selected from a sample of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. To separate the $$ \mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{H} $$ signal from the irreducible $$ \mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}+\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $$ background, the analysis assigns leading order matrix element signal and background probability densities to each event. A likelihood-ratio statistic based on these probability densities is used to extract the signal. The results are provided in terms of an observed ttH signal strength relative to the standard model production cross section μ = σ/σSM, assuming a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV. The best fit value is $$ \widehat{\mu}=0.9\pm 0.7\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)\pm 1.3\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)=0.9\pm 1.5\left(\mathrm{tot}\right) $$ , and the observed and expected upper limits are, respectively, μ < 3.8 and < 3.1 at 95% confidence levels.

Abstract: Long-distance migratory organisms are under strong selection to migrate quickly. Stopovers demand more time than flying and are used by individuals to refuel during migration, but the effect of fuel loads (fat) acquired at stopover sites on the subsequent pace of migration has not been quantified. We studied stopover behaviour of Grey-cheeked Thrush (Catharus minimus) at a site in northern Colombia and then tracked their migration using an intercontinental radio-telemetry array. Tracking confirmed long-distance flights of more than 3000 km, highlighting the key importance of a single stopover site to the migration strategy of this species. Our results suggest that these songbirds behave as time-minimizers as predicted by optimal migration theory, and that fuel loads acquired at this South American stopover site, together with departure date, carry-over to influence the pace of migration, contributing to differences in travel time of up to 30 days in birds subsequently detected in the U. S. and Canada. Such variation in the pace of migration arising from a single stopover site, likely has important fitness consequences and suggests that identifying important fuelling sites will be essential to effectively conserve migratory species.
