01 Jan 2010TL;DR: Complexity theory has become a major topic of discussion in discussions about the theory and practice of education as discussed by the authors, and some contributions make a case for the promotion of complexity in education, others focus more explicitly on questions concerning the reduction of complexity through education.
Abstract: Complexity theory has become a major infl uence in discussions about the theory and practice of education. This book focuses on a question which so far has received relatively little attention in such discussions, which is the question of the politics of complexity. The chapters in this book engage with this question in a range of different ways. Whereas some contributions make a case for the promotion of complexity in education, others focus more explicitly on questions concerning the reduction of complexity in and through education. The chapters do so using theoretical, historical and empirical arguments, paying attention to a range of different educational settings (including early childhood education, school education, post-compulsory education, lifelong learning and work-based education), and focusing on different aspects of these practices (such as curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, architecture, and management). Taken together the chapters not only reveal the potential of complexity for engaging with questions about the politics of education in new and different ways. They also provide examples of a more refl exive engagement with the politics of complexity in education itself.

TL;DR: In this paper, a smoothed empirical likelihood-based test for the null hypothesis was proposed, where the test statistic is asymptotically normal under a null hypothesis and derived under a sequence of local alternatives.
Abstract: Let (x,z) be a pair of observable random vectors We construct a new "smoothed" empirical likelihood-based test for the hypothesis $\E\{ g(z,\break \theta)|x \} = 0$ wp1, where g is a vector of known functions and $\theta$ an unknown finite-dimensional parameter We show that the test statistic is asymptotically normal under the null hypothesis and derive its asymptotic distribution under a sequence of local alternatives Furthermore, the test is shown to possess an optimality property in large samples Simulation evidence suggests that it also behaves well in small samples

TL;DR: The Notch pathway is expressed and active in microglial cells and plays an important role in the control of inflammatory reactions in the CNS.
Abstract: The Notch signaling pathway plays a crucial role in specifying cellular fate in metazoan development by regulating communication between adjacent cells. Correlative studies suggested an involvement of Notch in hematopoietic cell development. Here, we report that the Notch pathway is expressed and active in microglial cells. During inflammatory activation, the transcription of the Notch down-stream effector Hes1 is downregulated. When Notch1 transcription in microglia is inhibited, an upregulation of the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines is observed. Notch stimulation in activated microglia, using a soluble form of its ligand Jagged1, induces a decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines secretion and nitric oxide production as well as an increase in phagocytic activity. Notch-stimulation is accompanied by an increase in the rate of STAT3 phosphorylation and nuclear translocation. Our results show that the Notch pathway plays an important role in the control of inflammatory reactions in the CNS.

TL;DR: The relevance of formate metabolism in the context of embryonic development, cancer, obesity, immunometabolism, and neurodegeneration is discussed, along with an outlook of some open questions bringing formates metabolism into the spotlight.
Abstract: Background Formate is a one-carbon molecule at the crossroad between cellular and whole body metabolism, between host and microbiome metabolism, and between nutrition and toxicology. This centrality confers formate with a key role in human physiology and disease that is currently unappreciated. Scope of review Here we review the scientific literature on formate metabolism, highlighting cellular pathways, whole body metabolism, and interactions with the diet and the gut microbiome. We will discuss the relevance of formate metabolism in the context of embryonic development, cancer, obesity, immunometabolism, and neurodegeneration. Major conclusions We will conclude with an outlook of some open questions bringing formate metabolism into the spotlight.

TL;DR: Investigation of the impact of the cold pressor test or a control intervention on three established laboratory paradigms to assess cardioceptive accuracy found CA was increased by stress when attention was focused on visceral sensations (Schandry), while it decreased when Attention was additionally directed toward external stimuli (visual Whitehead).
