TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess the impact of economic ideology and national culture on the individual work values of managers in the United States, Russia, Japan, and China, and draw implications for the convergence-divergence-crossvergence of values, as well as for the feasibility of multidomestic or global strategies for a corporate culture.
Abstract: This study assesses the impact of economic ideology and national culture on the individual work values of managers in the United States, Russia, Japan, and China. The convergence-divergence-crossvergence (CDC) framework was used as theoretical framework for the study, while the Schwartz Value Survey (SVS) was used to operationalize over investigation of managerial work values across these four countries. The findings largely support the crossvergence prospective, while also confirming the role of national culture. Implications from the findings are drawn for the convergence-divergence-crossvergence of values, as well as for the feasibility of multidomestic or global strategies for a corporate culture.

TL;DR: In this article, the conceptual differences between adopting a probabilistic weighting of the futures and a risk averse strategy, in power system planning under uncertain scenarios, are illustrated with a distribution planning problem, where optimal solutions in both cases are determined by a GA.
Abstract: This paper shows the conceptual differences between adopting a probabilistic weighting of the futures and a risk averse strategy, in power system planning under uncertain scenarios. It is illustrated with a distribution planning problem, where optimal solutions in both cases are determined by a genetic algorithm. It shows that the probabilistic approach is less safe and cannot detect some interesting solutions.

TL;DR: The design of a fuzzy logic controller for an inverted pendulum system with basic performance of fuzzy logic control (FLC) and conventional control and general ideas for designing fuzzy logic controllers and descriptions of FLC for industrial automation are presented.
Abstract: The design of a fuzzy logic controller for an inverted pendulum system is described in this paper. A brief review of the basics of the fuzzy logic controller and its relationship to a conventional controller is first given. Then, the derivation of a fuzzy control algorithm for an inverted pendulum is described in detail. The proposed fuzzy control is evaluated by simulation. The basic performance of fuzzy logic control (FLC) and conventional control are compared. Finally, general ideas for designing fuzzy logic controllers and descriptions of FLC for industrial automation are presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of ceria (CeO2) on the wear and corrosion of laser-clad nickel-based alloy coatings was investigated, and the results of microstructure observations, wear tests and corrosion tests showed that the addition of CeO2 can modify the micro-structure and properties of the laser-clad coatings.
Abstract: The effect of ceria (CeO2) on the wear and corrosion of laser-clad nickel-based alloy coatings was investigated. The results of microstructure observations, wear tests and corrosion tests show that the addition of CeO2 can modify the microstructure and properties of laser-clad coatings. The microstructure gets refined, the microhardness is increased, the inclusion percentage is reduced and the wear resistance and corrosion resistance are both improved. The mechanism of these effects is also discussed in this paper.

TL;DR: In this article, a novel GaAs MMIC active filter structure based on the lumped and transversal technique is proposed for operation in the X-band, which includes a tuned amplifier in order to improve the band edge rejection.
Abstract: A novel GaAs MMIC active filter structure based on the lumped and transversal technique is proposed for operation in the X-band. This new structure includes a tuned amplifier in order to improve the band edge rejection. A design example of a bandpass filter centered @ 7.5 GHz with 2 dB passband ripple and 30 dB rejection @1 GHz apart from passband edges is presented in terms of computer simulated results and layout. The simulated results demonstrate its superior performance when compared with the traditional lumped and transversal technique.

TL;DR: Numerical results show that the approximate MCRs approach the exact ones in the tails of the MCR curves as the number of the basic functions increases.
Abstract: The mean upcrossing rate of the stationary responses of nonlinear stochastic system excited by white noise is analyzed based on the assumption that the probability density function (PDF) of the responses is a linear superposition of basic functions. The Gaussian PDFs are used as the basic functions of which the coefficients are the reciprocal of the number of the basic functions. The Gaussian closure method is a special case of the proposed method. Based upon the approximate PDF, the explicit expression for the mean upcrossing rate (MCR) is given. Numerical results show that the approximate MCRs approach the exact ones in the tails of the MCR curves as the number of the basic functions increases.

TL;DR: In this article, an adaptive filtering technology called adaptive noise canceling (ANC)" based active power filter (APF) is developed; it uses a primary input containing the corrupted signal and a reference input correlated with the fundamental component of the system voltage.
Abstract: The most critical issues associated with active power filter (APF) control is that of finding an algorithm which can obtain an accurate harmonic reference signal for control purpose, particularly in the practical case where the harmonics and the system frequency of a power system are time varying. In this paper, an adaptive filtering technology called "adaptive noise canceling (ANC)" based APF is developed; it uses a primary input containing the corrupted signal and a reference input correlated with the fundamental component of the system voltage. The reference input is adaptively filtered and subtracted from the primary input to obtain the desired control reference signal. Its validity is assessed by both simulation and experimental results.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the changes in the co-movements of the twelve largest European equity markets after the 1987 international equity market crash and found that the benefits of international diversification with these twelve European stock markets decreased considerably after the crash.
Abstract: This article studies the changes in the co-movements of the twelve largest European equity markets after the 1987 international equity market crash. Tests based on Box M and principal component analysis indicate that the co-movements of these equity markets changed significantly after the crash. Low correlations among national equity markets are often presented as evidence in support of the benefits of international portfolio diversification. The findings indicate that correlations among the twelve largest European equity markets and between these equity markets and the U.S. equity market increased substantially; therefore, the benefits of international diversification with these twelve European equity markets decreased considerably after the crash.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed alternative solutions based on impulse sampled Intermittent Polyphase SC Structures that operate with either sampled-and-held or arbitrary input signal formats.
Abstract: Rational sampling rate conversion factors L/M are usually obtained by cascading an L-fold upconverter followed by an M-fold downconverter. Because the traditional SC circuits employed in such cases give rise to undesired distortion effects due to the intermediary sampled-and-held signals, this paper proposes alternative solutions based on impulse sampled Intermittent Polyphase SC Structures that operate with either sampled-and-held or arbitrary input signal formats. Two alternative architectures are studied and their comparative advantages will be discussed from the viewpoints of component count and speed of the amplifiers. Behavioural level simulations illustrate well their discrete-time operation and the resulting input-output frequency responses.

TL;DR: To reduce the network traffic and improve network performance, different strategies in network management are discussed: decentralizing the network resources and centralizing the information control by building Intranets, while both involve constructing appropriate workgroups using VLAN technology.
Abstract: This paper presents the problems existing in a typical campus network system which have a negative effect on network performance, and discusses approaches in network management to improve the performance by traffic reduction. Statistics are gathered to show the variation of average response time from critical network devices. It turns out that the Internet servers suffer from a more frequently varying response time than the common intra-network servers. It also shows that better network performance results if the network traffic is kept as local as possible. The main concerns in identifying the network problems include the analysis of the distribution of the critical network resources, network segment workload and information flow; and the routing policy and the configuration of different workgroups. To reduce the network traffic and improve network performance, different strategies in network management are discussed: decentralizing the network resources and centralizing the information control by building Intranets, while both involve constructing appropriate workgroups using VLAN technology.

TL;DR: In this paper, two new impulse sampled SC FIR rational decimator architectures are proposed employing the efficient intermittent polyphase structures with double-sampled active-delayed blocks, which not only render them immune to the above distortion effect but also allow a significant relaxation of the amplifiers settling.
Abstract: The conventional scheme for sampled-data analog decimation with rational conversion ratio of L/M(M>L) suffers from undesired distortion due to the input sample-and-hold filtering effect in the front interpolation stage. Two new impulse sampled SC FIR rational decimator architectures are proposed in this paper employing the efficient intermittent polyphase structures with Double-Sampled Active-Delayed Blocks (ADBs) which not only render them immune to the above distortion effect but also allow a significant relaxation of the amplifiers settling.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the idea of the "bidirectional revolving magnetic fields" concept, i.e., each coil carrying AC current will produce a pulsating MMF that can be decomposed into two opposite-directional revolving MMFs, and then synthesize the effects of all coil MMFs according to actual inner-faults.
Abstract: In order to improve the internal-fault simulation of three-phase induction motors, the authors present the basic idea of the "bidirectional revolving magnetic fields" concept, i.e. each coil carrying AC current will produce a pulsating MMF that can be decomposed into two opposite-directional revolving MMFs. One can then synthesize the effects of all coil MMFs according to actual inner-faults in order to take the place of the symmetrical components method in solving the internal faults of induction motors. In addition, the motor parameters are influenced by internal faults, for example, the slot leakage reactances, even if referred to the same number of turns, are still unequal, and the same is true of the resistances, which have been considered in this paper. On the basis of these ideas, a new mathematical model and a corresponding computation program have been built, and simulation results have also been obtained. The simulation results are quite approximate to the measured data. This analysis method is accurate enough and simpler than other methods, such as the multi-loop method.

TL;DR: In this paper, the problems existing in the present theory on flexural-torsional buckling of structures are discussed, and the buckling procedure is found to be restricted to certain development order of displacements and rotations.
Abstract: In this paper, the problems existing in the present theory on flexural-torsional buckling of structures are discussed, and the buckling procedure is found to be restricted to certain development order of displacements and rotations by the present theory. A fresh idea is, therefore, proposed for the mathematical description of actual flexural-torsional buckling procedure of structures. New geometric equations are formulated and a set of new potential variational equation and neutral equilibrium equations are got for the flexural-torsional buckling analysis of structures. Examples are given to detect the numerical difference between the modified theory and the present accepted theory.

TL;DR: In this paper, a G/sub m/-C 4th order bandpass filter with on-chip automatic frequency and Q-factor tuning is realized in 0.8 /spl mu/m digital CMOS.
Abstract: A G/sub m/-C 4th order bandpass filter with on-chip automatic frequency and Q-factor tuning is realized in 0.8 /spl mu/m digital CMOS. The filter operates at nominal 21.4 MHz center frequency but can also be tuned to cover the frequency range from 15 to 30 MHz. It occupies 0.48 mm/sup 2/, and at 5 V supply it dissipates 15 mW, achieves 62 dB signal-to-noise ratio in the passband, -43 dB intermodulation distortion and a 3rd order intercept point of 24 dBm for a 3 V/sub pp/ input overdrive signal.
