Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to reexamine several issues about disintermediation from the perspectives of tourism product/service suppliers (hotels) and traditional intermediaries (travel agencies), considering the move of the current distribution landscape toward disintermediation. Internet and mobile technologies offer various tools for consumers to search and purchase products/services from suppliers directly. Consequently, the necessity and role of traditional intermediaries in the industry become questionable. Design/methodology/approach – In all, six focus group interviews were conducted to collect primary data from ten managers of three traditional travel agencies and 11 managers from three business hotels in Hong Kong, which is a major travel destination in Asia with many world-class hotels and tourism facilities. Abstract: Chemotherapy is the standard internal medical treatment for cancer. However, the resistance of cancer cells to nearly all kinds of chemotherapeutic drugs and targeted drugs has become prevalent, and approximately 80-90% of deaths in cancer patients are directly or indirectly attributed to drug resistance. The progress of new drug research and development has also been impeded by the occurrence of drug resistance, which has emerged as a considerable challenge in cancer therapy. Fortunately, natural products with diverse chemical structures and pharmacological effects serve as effective substances against drug resistance. Since the discovery of a series of drug-resistant proteins, drug-efflux inhibition has been applied as the primary strategy to overcome drug resistance by maintaining the intracellular concentrations of chemotherapeutic drugs. Nonapoptotic cell death is considered an alternative strategy because most cases of drug resistance result in evasion and insensitivity to apoptosis. In this concise review, we summarize two strategies using natural products against drug resistance.

Abstract: To provide an overview of resilience and protective factors associated with a better life following child maltreatment exposure, to compare protective factors across specific subtypes of maltreatment, and to explore existing issues in the current state of the literature. Electronic databases and grey literature up to October 2017 were systematically searched for English language with observational study designs for the research on resilience and childhood maltreatment. Systematic review and qualitative approaches were used to synthesize the results. Study quality and heterogeneity were also examined. Initial screening of titles and abstracts resulted in 247 papers being reviewed. A total of 85 articles met eligibility criteria of this review. Most of these studies had low or middle study quality. There were two subgroups of studies reviewed: (1) 11 studies examined whether resilience protected against the negative consequence of childhood maltreatment, and, (2) 75 studies explored what protective factor was associated with a kind of adaptive functioning. Although the conceptualization of resilience significantly varied from study to study, protective factors associated with resilience at individual, familial, and societal levels reduced the likelihood of negative consequences of childhood maltreatment. Negative consequences following childhood maltreatment can be prevented or moderated if protective factors are provided in time. Future research needs to address the conceptualization issue of resilience. Public and population mental health preventions should focus on early childhood and apply preventive strategies as early as possible. Cost-effective studies should be considered in the evaluation of resilience prevention program.

Abstract: Kindlins and talins are integrin-binding proteins that are critically involved in integrin activation, an essential process for many fundamental cellular activities including cell-matrix adhesion, migration, and proliferation. As FERM-domain–containing proteins, talins and kindlins, respectively, bind different regions of β-integrin cytoplasmic tails. However, compared with the extensively studied talin, little is known about how kindlins specifically interact with integrins and synergistically enhance their activation by talins. Here, we determined crystal structures of kindlin2 in the apo-form and the β1- and β3-integrin bound forms. The apo-structure shows an overall architecture distinct from talins. The complex structures reveal a unique integrin recognition mode of kindlins, which combines two binding motifs to provide specificity that is essential for integrin activation and signaling. Strikingly, our structures uncover an unexpected dimer formation of kindlins. Interrupting dimer formation impairs kindlin-mediated integrin activation. Collectively, the structural, biochemical, and cellular results provide mechanistic explanations that account for the effects of kindlins on integrin activation as well as for how kindlin mutations found in patients with Kindler syndrome and leukocyte-adhesion deficiency may impact integrin-mediated processes.
