Abstract: The dietary flavonoids, especially their glycosides, are the most vital phytochemicals in diets and are of great general interest due to their diverse bioactivity. The natural flavonoids almost all exist as their O-glycoside or C-glycoside forms in plants. In this review, we summarized the existing knowledge on the different biological benefits and pharmacokinetic behaviors between flavonoid aglycones and their glycosides. Due to various conclusions from different flavonoid types and health/disease conditions, it is very difficult to draw general or universally applicable comments regarding the impact of glycosylation on the biological benefits of flavonoids. It seems as though O-glycosylation generally reduces the bioactivity of these compounds - this has been observed for diverse properties including antioxidant activity, antidiabetes activity, anti-inflammation activity, antibacterial, antifungal activity, antitumor activity, anticoagulant activity, antiplatelet activity, antidegranulating activity, antitrypanosomal activity, influenza virus neuraminidase inhibition, aldehyde oxidase inhibition, immunomodulatory, and antitubercular activity. However, O-glycosylation can enhance certain types of biological benefits including anti-HIV activity, tyrosinase inhibition, antirotavirus activity, antistress activity, antiobesity activity, anticholinesterase potential, antiadipogenic activity, and antiallergic activity. However, there is a lack of data for most flavonoids, and their structures vary widely. There is also a profound lack of data on the impact of C-glycosylation on flavonoid biological benefits, although it has been demonstrated that in at least some cases C-glycosylation has positive effects on properties that may be useful in human healthcare such as antioxidant and antidiabetes activity. Furthermore, there is a lack of in vivo data that would make it possible to make broad generalizations concerning the influence of glycosylation on the benefits of flavonoids for human health. It is possible that the effects of glycosylation on flavonoid bioactivity in vitro may differ from that seen in vivo. With in vivo (oral) treatment, flavonoid glycosides showed similar or even higher antidiabetes, anti-inflammatory, antidegranulating, antistress, and antiallergic activity than their flavonoid aglycones. Flavonoid glycosides keep higher plasma levels and have a longer mean residence time than those of aglycones. We should pay more attention to in vivo benefits of flavonoid glycosides, especially C-glycosides.

Abstract: Our goal is to develop a profile of Chinese managers, and in particular a profile of the New Generation of Chinese managers. The purpose for developing this profile is primarily to provide relevant information for non-Chinese business people, especially Westerners, who plan to engage in business in China. This profile is based on measures of individual values (Individualism, Collectivism and Confucianism) relevant to China and business. Our findings suggest that the New Generation manager is more individualistic and more likely to act independently, while taking risks in the pursuit of profits. However, these New managers are, likewise, not forsaking their Confucian values. Thus, they may be viewed as crossverging their Eastern and Western influences, while on the road of modernization.

Abstract: Near-infrared (NIR)-light-triggered photothermal therapy (PTT) usually requires hyperthermia to >50 °C for effective tumor ablation, which can potentially induce inflammatory disease and heating damage of normal organs nearby, while tumor lesions without sufficient heating (e.g., the internal part) may survive after treatment. Achieving effective tumor killing under relatively low temperatures is thus critical toward successful clinical use of PTT. Herein, we design a simple strategy to fabricate poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-modified one-dimensional nanoscale coordination polymers (1D-NCPs) with intrinsic biodegradability, large surface area, pH-responsive behaviors, and versatile theranostic functions. With NCPs consisting of Mn2+/indocyanine green (ICG) as the example, Mn-ICG@pHis-PEG display efficient pH-responsive tumor retention after systemic administration and then load Gambogic acid (GA), a natural inhibitor of heat-shock protein 90 (Hsp90) that plays an essential role for cells to resist heating-induced damage. Such Mn-ICG@pHis-PEG/GA under a mild NIR-triggered heating is able to induce effective apoptosis of tumor cells, realizing low-temperature PTT (~43 °C) with excellent tumor destruction efficacy. This work not only develops a facile approach to fabricate PEGylated 1D-NCPs with tumor-specific pH responsiveness and theranostic functionalities, but also presents a unique low-temperature PTT strategy to kill cancer in a highly effective and minimally invasive manner.

Dictating protein assembly to obtain highly ordered nanostructures and sophisticated functions not only provides a powerful tool to understand the natural protein assembly process but also offers access to advanced biomaterials. Over the past couple of decades, the field of protein assembly has undergone unexpected and rapid developments, and various innovative strategies have been proposed.
