Abstract: Research has demonstrated that children who experience familial sexual maltreatment are at risk for developing psychological difficulties characterized by emotional and behavioral dysregulation. Surprisingly, however, little attention has been directed toward identifying processes in emotional development that differ in maltreated and nonmaltreated children. From a developmental psychopathology perspective, the present study examined emotion management skills (i.e., emotional understanding, emotion regulation) in 21 sexually maltreated girls and their nonmaltreated peers to determine how the experience of sexual maltreatment may interfere with normative emotional development. Findings indicated that sexually maltreated girls, in comparison to their nonmaltreated peers, demonstrate lower emotional understanding and decreased ability to regulate their emotions in accordance with cultural expectations. Further, maltreated girls expected less emotional support and more relational conflict from parents in response to sadness displays and from parents and peers in response to anger displays. These findings will be discussed from the functionalist approach to emotional development, emphasizing the importance of social context (e.g., maltreating, nonmaltreating) in the development of children's emotion management skills.

Abstract: Using the concepts of slow sound and of critical coupling, an ultra-thin acoustic metamaterial panel for perfect and omnidirectional absorption is theoretically and experimentally conceived in this work. The system is made of a rigid panel with a periodic distribution of thin closed slits, the upper wall of which is loaded by Helmholtz Resonators (HRs). The presence of resonators produces a slow sound propagation shifting the resonance frequency of the slit to the deep sub-wavelength regime ($\lambda/88$). By controlling the geometry of the slit and the HRs, the intrinsic visco-thermal losses can be tuned in order to exactly compensate the energy leakage of the system and fulfill the critical coupling condition to create the perfect absorption of sound in a large range of incidence angles due to the deep subwavelength behavior.

Abstract: Landscape fragmentation has been among the most intensely studied topics in conservation biology for decades (Gates & Gysel 1978; Murcia 1995). The influence of habitat edge has often been investigated as an important feature in fragmented areas, especially with respect to bird nesting success, as evidenced by three recent reviews. Paton (1994) concluded that "current evidence, although equivocal, suggests that predation and parasitism rates are often significantly greater within 50 m of an edge." Andren (1995) examined edge (or patch size) effects in a review of 40 papers and concluded that "edge-related increase in predation seems to be most commonly found inside forests surrounded by farmland and was rarely found in forest mosaics." Major and Kendal (1996) showed that a preponderance of studies "demonstrated a positive correlation between predation rate and the degree of habitat fragmentation," but found "more variable results" regarding edge effects. We believe that none of these papers adequately addressed the issue of whether or not predation rates and edge effects differ between deforested versus forested landscapes. Thus, we decided to evaluate relationships between degree of forest cover in a landscape and (1) avian nest success rates and (2) the existence of elevated predation rates near habitat edges. We combined data from 13 previous studies in 33 U.S. landscapes to explore patterns of nest predation and landscape composition.
