TL;DR: The only well-documented complete ophiolite, with continuous conformable sections from mantle harzburgite through gabbro to spilite, occurs in northeast Borneo and the neighboring Philippine Islands as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: No fewer than 20 belts of mafic-ultramafic assemblages have been named “ophiolite” in the complex Southeast Asia region of Sundaland. Fewer than half of these can be confidently classified as ophiolite. The only well-documented complete ophiolite, with continuous conformable sections from mantle harzburgite through gabbro to spilite, occurs in northeast Borneo and the neighboring Philippine Islands. It contains a record of oceanic lithospheric history from Jurassic to Tertiary and has a Miocene emplacement age. All other ophiolite belts of the region are either incomplete or dismembered. The Sundaland region probably has examples of several types of emplacement mechanism and emplacement ages ranging from early Paleozoic to Cenozoic.

TL;DR: In Malaya the most spectacular and most common iridescent blue plant is Selaginella willdenovii (Desv.) Spring, also frequently cultivated in greenhouses, and all comments on the iridescence colour refer back to the observation of Stahl2 who reported the presence of reflection granules in the epidermal cells of S. will denovii.
Abstract: MANY terrestrial plants of lowland tropical rainforests exhibit a conspicuous blue-green iridescence on their leaves—Richards1 has observed these plants in Africa, South America, and South-east Asia. We have seen many species of blue plants on the rainforest floor in Malaya, from diverse groups including the ferns, Selaginella, and flowering plants. In Malaya the most spectacular and most common iridescent blue plant is Selaginella willdenovii (Desv.) Spring, also frequently cultivated in greenhouses. All comments on the iridescent colour refer back to the observation of Stahl2 who reported the presence of reflection granules in the epidermal cells of S. willdenovii.

TL;DR: The presence of epoxide and amine groups as integral constituents of the natural rubber macromolecule have been demonstrated by application of an HBr double titration technique as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The presence of both epoxide and amine groups as integral constituents of the natural rubber macromolecule have been demonstrated, by application of an HBr double titration technique. The number of such groups is dependent on the clonal source of the rubber and is found to decrease on storage in step with an increase in the plasticity of the rubber. The groups are believed to be involved in nonoxidative crosslinking reactions which occur in rubber on storage. Possible crosslinking mechanisms are proposed.

TL;DR: In this article, the propagation of solar-flare cosmic rays along a corotating spiral mean interplanetary magnetic flux-tube is investigated under a variety of initial, inner and outer boundary conditions, by solving the transport equations numerically.
Abstract: The propagation of solar-flare cosmic rays along a corotating spiral mean interplanetary magnetic flux-tube is investigated under a variety of initial, inner and outer boundary conditions, by solving the transport equations numerically. The inner boundary condition is shown to have negligible effects on the redistribution of the cosmic rays in interplanetary space, apart from a proportionality constant. The diffusion coefficients have been classified into type I and type II: for type I the peakalong-spiral stays at a finite heliocentric distance, while for type II it travels to infinity. The time dependence of the anisotropy vector is characteristically different in each type and in the case of type I is a function of the observation point. The general propagation characteristics with a free-escape outer boundary are like those of type I. It is shown that closely exponential decay can be produced without a free-escape boundary. The concept of an ‘equilibrium shape’ at late time is introduced. With a source that decays slowly, a maximum and minimum pair appears in the spatial distribution; the maximum subsequently propagates outward and the minimum inward. The impulsive models given do not reproduce satisfactorily all the observed characteristics of solar burst events and a solar source extended in time appears to be indicated.

TL;DR: By 1990, a conurbation will have emerged in the Klang Valley of Peninsular Malaysia with a probable population of more than two million people as mentioned in this paper. But the persistence of slums and squatter settlements detracts from the quality of urban life.
Abstract: By 1990 a conurbation will have emerged in the Klang Valley of Peninsular Malaysia with a probable population of more than two million people. Rapid urban growth has already generated physical and social problems. Soil erosion and flooding have increased, and health problems have been created. The persistence of slums and squatter settlements detracts from the quality of urban life.

TL;DR: A group of patients with solitary nodules of the thyroid were treated at the University of Malaya by surgery under local anaesthesia in order to expedite exploration of a potentially malignant condition.
Abstract: A group of patients with solitary nodules of the thyroid were treated at the University of Malaya by surgery under local anaesthesia. This was done in order to expedite exploration of a potentially malignant condition. This group comprised 43 patients, and four cancers were found. The standard technique used was satisfactory from the viewpoint of both the patient and the surgeon. The pattern of this condition in a Malaysian population is documented, the technique used is described, and thyroidectomy under local aneaesthesia is discussed.

TL;DR: The indirect selection for yield using virgin bark thickness appeared to be more favourable than that using the girth at opening favoured by earlier workers, suggesting that considerable improvement of each of the characters could be achieved in properly designed experiments.
Abstract: Heritability estimates of five quantitative characters, namely, yield, girth, girth increment, virgin bark and renewed bark thickness, of the breeding Phase III Hevea families have been obtained by variance component analyses. In general, the combined heritability estimates for various characters were low to moderate. The heritabilities of these characters based on female variance components, however, were high, suggesting that considerable improvement of each of the characters could be achieved in properly designed experiments.

TL;DR: The paper discusses a method for designing an antenna array having an omnidirectional pattern in the horizontal plane plus a single steerable null, and shows that attractive pattern characteristics can be achieved through this method of synthesis.
Abstract: The paper discusses a method for designing an antenna array having an omnidirectional pattern in the horizontal plane plus a single steerable null. Such a system has applications in communications when it is required to reject interfering signals from an unwanted source, while maintaining communication coverage in other directions. Parameters such as null width, null depth and the gain ripple in the directions of coverage are defined in order to make sensible comparisons between performance of various null patterns. An efficient and simple method for the synthesis of such a pattern, using a circular array, is presented. It involves the appropriate combination of a beamcophasal pattern with that of an omnidirectional pattern, and it is shown that by choosing a phase-sequence omnidirectional pattern for this purpose, a narrower `single-zero? null may be obtained. The calculated results show that attractive pattern characteristics can be achieved through this method of synthesis.

TL;DR: In this paper, the basic equivalent transformation Pσ = (−1)p (Pr)−1 is used to transform between the Young operators for a two-row standard tableau and its conjugate two-column tableau.
Abstract: The basic equivalent transformation Pσ = (−1)p (Pr)−1 as developed recently [6] is used to transform between the Young operators for a two-row standard tableau and its conjugate two-column standard tableau. These Young operators are shown to be the Lowdin spin projectors in the spin function-dependent methods and the spin projectors in the spin function-free methods. The sandwich operator of Gallup and the last diagonal element of the matric basis of Matsen are shown to be the special cases of our more general matric projectors. Several different forms of the Lowdin spin projectors, spin projectors, and matric projectors are shown and their relations are discussed.

TL;DR: In the primary dentition the similar caries experience observed in the three groups of children was most probably due to the widespread occurrence of rampant caries which would heavily weight the dift score of the children in all three groups.
Abstract: A dental health survey of 15,197 schoolchildren age 6-18 years was conducted in West Malaysia. The caries experience in the permanent teeth of the three racial groups, namely Malay, Chinese and Indian/Pakistani, showed a distinct variation. The prevalence was highest among the Chinese children, being about twice that of the Malay and Indian/Pakistani children. In the primary dentition, however, the caries experience in the three racial groups was comparable. An analysis of the factors contributing to the racial variation showed that dietary influence was not the only factor responsible. The possibility of a racial variation in caries susceptibility has been postulated. In the primary dentition the similar caries experience observed in the three groups of children was most probably due to the widespread occurrence of rampant caries which would heavily weight the dift score of the children in all three groups. The need to fluoridate the public water supply as an effective preventive measure is emphasized.

TL;DR: In this article, the double-time Green's-function method was used to study the Anderson dilute-alloy model in arbitrary magnetic fields by means of a truncation procedure, and the coupled equations were reduced to a singular integral equation for the transition matrix.
Abstract: We have studied the infinite-$U$ Anderson dilute-alloy model in arbitrary magnetic fields by means of the double-time Green's-function method. Using a truncation procedure, the coupled equations are reduced to a singular integral equation for the transition matrix. The integral equation is then solved exactly by analytic methods. The impurity-electron occupation number $〈n〉$ is calculated for general values of parameters, $\ensuremath{\Delta}$, ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{d}$, and $T$ at zero field. It is found that the local moment exhibits strong temperature dependence at temperatures above the Kondo temperature.

Abstract: Spin densities in the Waller–Hartree spin-free method were found to be the same as in the spin-projected Slater determinant method. The reduced spin projector Q is introduced and its relation with the spin projector P is discussed. An equation is obtained to show that a Sanibel coefficient can be expressed as a linear combination of N! products of Sanibel coefficients.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical and experimental analysis is made of the behavior of a double pendulum with viscoelastic hinges subjected to a follower force, and the effects of variations in the masses, stiffnesses, geometry and the internal and external velocity-dependent forces on the stability of the system are examined in detail.
Abstract: A theoretical and experimental analysis is made of the behaviour of a double pendulum with viscoelastic hinges subjected to a follower force. The effects of variations in the masses, stiffnesses, geometry and the internal and external velocity-dependent forces on the stability of the system are examined in detail. The picture that emerges shows all these factors to be important. In all cases, instability occurs in the first mode of flutter motion and the results accurately confirm theoretical predictions.

TL;DR: The ferrokinetic study shows that the alcoholic rat had a lower plasma iron turnover rate, and the implication of this finding is difficult to interpret when the efflux of plasma iron to the unspecific soft tissues is not available.
Abstract: SummaryThe changes in the haematological parameters and iron metabolism in rats with fatty livers after they had been fed with 20% alcohol and normal standard diet for a period of 12 months were studied. The haematocrit, haemoglobulin concentration and erythrocyte count were within the normal range. The erythropoietic rate was elevated, probably as the result of the shortened life-span of the erythrocytes. The rate of iron absorption in the alcoholic rat did not vary. The iron stores in the spleen and small intestine were, however, markedly increased. The ferrokinetic study shows that the alcoholic rat had a lower plasma iron turnover rate. In view of the elevated erythropoiesis the implication of this finding is difficult to interpret when the efflux of plasma iron to the unspecific soft tissues is not available.

TL;DR: The CAR-acquisition rates of the treatment groups were quite close and parallel to that of the controls except for the morphine, meprobamate, medazepam and the two drug-trained subgroups; whereas, the rats raised on low-dose morphine showed a faster than control acquisition rate.
Abstract: Ratlings born of six drug-addicted and a control group of parent rats were raised under the influence of the same drugs administered in drinking water. They were trained in a conditioned avoidance paradigm (CAR) from the 7th week when the drugs were withdrawn except in two subgroups of flurazepam and morphine. The growth rate was not appreciably impaired except for temporary slowness in morphine and alcohol-raised rats; it was faster in phenobarbitone and meprobamate-raised rats. The CAR-acquisition rates of the treatment groups were quite close and parallel to that of the controls except for the morphine, meprobamate, medazepam and the two drug-trained subgroups; whereas, the rats raised on low-dose morphine showed a faster than control acquisition rate. No evidence of state-dependent learning was obtained from this study.

TL;DR: The age of the Langkawi folding phase is probably post-Early Permian and pre-Early Triassic as discussed by the authors, which is the same as the age of Ordovician to Carboniferous Singa Formation.
Abstract: The currently accepted concepts of a Devonian unconformity and a middle Paleozoic folding phase in northwest Malaya are incorrect. At the best exposed locality of the supposed Devonian unconformity, in the Langkawi Islands, the strata from Lower to Upper Devonian are continuous, and the horizon of the "unconformity" is conformable. Remapping in the type area of the middle Paleozoic orogenic phase shows that the deformed rocks were dated incorrectly and include strata of Ordovician to Carboniferous age. Most of the structures described in support of the folding phase are in strata of the Carboniferous Singa Formation. The age of the Langkawi folding phase is probably post-Early Permian and pre-Early Triassic. Devonian strata containing common tentaculitid-monograptid and bivalve-brachiopod-trilobite faunas are fairly widespread in the Langkawi Islands and Kedah and Perlis States in northwest Malaya. These previously have been dated incorrectly as Silurian or Carboniferous in age.

TL;DR: This paper discusses a neuronal model based on a model of Coleman and Gastwirth (1969) that is assumed that the excitatory input forms a Poisson process while the inhibitory input form a stationary renewal process.
Abstract: This paper discusses a neuronal model based on a model of Coleman and Gastwirth (1969). It is assumed that the excitatory input forms a Poisson process while the inhibitory input forms a stationary renewal process. The proposed interaction scheme is as follows: an inhibitor deletes at most N consecutive excitatory inputs and a response only occurs after the cummalative storage of M excitatory inputs. The Laplace transform of the probability density function (p.d.f.) of the inter-response intervals is derived together with results of the numerical inversions.
